Hydroponic modulation of Sonchus oleraceus L. leaf composition: impact of NPK balance on nutritious attributes and biological effects.

BACKGROUND: Sonchus oleraceus L. (common sowthistle) is a wild leafy vegetable with recognized culinary and pharmacological potential. In hydroponics, controlled nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) imbalances act as an agronomic eustress (positive stress) that stimulates the defensive accumulation of secondary metabolites, thereby enhancing the leaves' biological value. Aiming to exploit this modulation, we evaluated the impact of varying concentrations of N (100-200 mg L-1), P (47-105 mg L-1), and K (250-525 mg L-1) on hydroponic cultivation of Sonchus oleraceus leaves, based on p

Growth, secondary metabolite production, and in vitro antiplasmodial activity of Sonchus arvensis L. callus under dolomite [CaMg(CO3)2] treatment.

Malaria is still a global health problem. Plasmodium is a single-cell protozoan parasite that causes malaria and is transmitted to humans through the female Anopheles mosquito. The previous study showed that Sonchus arvensis L. callus has antiplasmodial activity. Several treatments are needed for callus quality improvement for antimalarial compound production. This study aimed to examine the effect of dolomite [CaMg(CO3)2] on growth (morpho-anatomical structure and biomass), secondary metabolite production, and in vitro antiplasmodial activity of S. arvensis L. callus. Functional traits reveal unaccounted diversity within Sonchus asper (L.) Hill (Asteraceae) in the northern Mediterranean and enable the reinstatement of ancient taxa.

Functional traits express the ecological and evolutionary attributes of individuals that compose taxa, providing robust criteria to detect speciation when integrated with phylogenies. We tested this approach in Sonchus asper (L.) Hill, a putatively self-fertilizing annual weed that has recently been reported to exhibit extensive floral and life-form variation across the northern Mediterranean. This variability was already documented in the nineteenth century, but it is incongruent with current subspecific classifications based on leaf arrangement. We sampled 40 populations encompassing this va

Deep learning classification of INSV-associated weeds in Monterey county using a curated RGB image dataset.

Weeds, defined by their ecological and economic impact rather than taxonomy, present a major challenge to agriculture by competing with crops for limited resources and serving as vectors for disease. In Monterey County, California, one of the most productive farming regions in the United States, Sonchus oleraceus (annual sowthistle) and Malva parviflora (little mallow) have been linked to over $150 million in crop losses due to their role in spreading Impatiens Necrotic Spot Virus (INSV). As precision agriculture becomes more important in high-value production systems, deep learning and image-

The rationality involved in the popular use of coffee (Coffea sp) and sunflower seed (Helianthus annuus) for the treatment of vitiligo: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Vitiligo is a dermatological disease that affects about 0.38% to 2.9% of the world population. Currently, the main treatments used for vitiligo involve the use of topical drugs such as corticosteroids and calcineurin inhibitors, phototherapy, systemic treatment with steroids and even surgical grafts and, in acute cases, depigmenting treatments. Natural products are an alternative for the treatment of vitiligo: mamacadela (Brosimum gaudichaudii), a plant rich in furanocoumarins, and sowthistle (Sonchus oleraceus), rich in phenolic substances, are already used to treat vitiligo.
