Irrigation water pH regulates cadmium accumulation, growth performance, and forage quality trade-offs in Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.).

BACKGROUND: Cadmium (Cd) contamination is a serious challenge to agricultural sustainability, threatening soil health, crop productivity, and the safety of food and feed chains globally. Irrigation water chemistry can significantly alter Cd mobility, plant uptake, and forage quality in arid and semi-arid regions. Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.) is an important forage valued for its high biomass production and stress tolerance. However, the role of irrigation water pH in regulating Cd accumulation, soil chemistry, and forage quality in sorghum remains poorly understood. METHODS: A pot experiment

Inclusions of diverse sorghum hybrids in diets based on wheat-sorghum blends support entirely satisfactory broiler chicken performance.

This study compared five diverse sorghum hybrids (Liberty, Cracka, Buster, Resolute, A66) in broiler chicken diets on growth performance, carcass traits, energy utilisation and nutrient digestibility from 14 to 30 days post-hatch. The five sorghums were included in diets based on wheat-sorghum blends with fixed inclusions of 380 g/kg sorghum, 250g/kg wheat and 165 g/kg soybean meal. A total of 360 mixed-sex, Ross 308 broiler chickens were randomly allocated to five dietary treatments, with six replicate cages per treatment and 12 birds per cage. Significant differences were not observed in gro

Genetic Architecture of domestication- and improvement-related traits using a population derived from Sorghum virgatum and Sorghum bicolor.

The genetic basis of domestication and improvement remains largely unknown in sorghum as a typical multiple-origins species. In this study, the F2 and F3 populations derived from a cross between Sorghum virgatum and domesticated sorghum were used to study the genetic architecture of domestication- and improvement-related traits. We found that human selection had greatly reshaped sorghum through the Quantitative Trait Loci (QTLs) with large genetic effects in the traits of harvest, plant architecture and grain taste including the reduction of shattering, few branches, short plant stature and th

Genome-wide identification and cadmium induced expression profiling of sulfate transporter (SULTR) genes in sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.).

Sulfur is an essential element for all living organisms. Plants can convert inorganic sulfur into organic sulfur compounds by complex enzymatic steps. In this study, we conducted a genome-wide analysis of sulfate transporter genes (SULTRs) in the sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) genome and examined expression profiles of SbSULTR genes under 200 µM cadmium (Cd) exposure. As a result of sorghum genome analysis, 11 SULTR genes were identified, including SbSULTR1;1, SbSULTR1;2, SbSULTR1;3, SbSULTR2;1, SbSULTR2;2, SbSULTR3;1, SbSULTR3;2, SbSULTR3;3, SbSULTR3;4, SbSULTR3;5, and SbSULTR4. A Phase-Dependent Model of Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) Cold Acclimation: Integrating Multi-Layered Networks and Alternative Splicing Signatures.

Cold stress limits sorghum productivity, yet the temporal organization of its molecular response remains incompletely understood. In this study, a multi-layered transcriptomic approach was employed to analyze the cold response of sorghum across 6 h, 12 h, and 24 h. By integrating differential expression, weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA), and alternative splicing (AS) profiling, a phase-dependent regulatory model was proposed. Quantitatively, the network was initially resolved into 17 co-expression modules, which were subsequently consolidated into 10 final modules. A core s

The genetic architecture of temperature-induced partial fertility restoration in A1 cytoplasm in sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench).

High-temperature-induced partial fertility in CMS sorghum is controlled by multiple genes that are distinct from genes involved in fertility restoration, contributing to reduced diversity in elite females. Cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) is used for commercial production of hybrid seed in sorghum. CMS-based hybrid breeding systems require female parental lines (CMS lines) to remain male sterile to prevent self-pollination and enable cross-pollination to generate hybrid seed. However, genetic and environmental factors can lead to the loss of male sterility in the pollen-accepting female parent

Sorgoleone concentration influences mycorrhizal colonization in sorghum.

The association between arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and sorghum, the fifth most cultivated cereal in the world and a staple food for many countries, is relevant to improving phosphorus (P) absorption. The importance of root exudation as a signal for the symbiosis has been shown for several species, but a complete understanding of the signaling molecules involved in the mycorrhizal symbiosis signaling pathway has not yet been elucidated. In this context, we investigated the effect of sorgoleone, one of the most studied allelochemicals and a predominant compound of root exudates in sorghu

Assessment of cold tolerance in early field emergence in sweet, fiber, and grain sorghums [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench].

INTRODUCTION: Constraints to the adoption of early sowings in biomass sorghum were found in its sensitivity to cold stress during germination. METHODS: A preliminary test was conducted in the laboratory on seven sorghums among sweet, fiber, and grain types, to assess their cold tolerance during germination. Sorghums were germinated at 8 °C and 25 °C (control). At the end of the test, final germination percentage (FG), mean germination time (MGT), and germination index (GI) were calculated. Thereafter, a first-year (2009) field study was conducted under the semi-arid climate of Southern Italy,

[Characterization of sequences, expression profiling, and natural allelic variation analysis of the MYC gene family in sorghum (Sorghum bicolor)].

Sorghum aphid (Melanaphis sacchari) and head smut fungi (Sporisorium reilianum) infesting sorghum cause delayed growth and development, and reduce yield and quality. This study use bioinformatics and molecular biological approaches to profile the gene expression pattern during sorghum development and under pest infestation, and analyzed the natural allelic DNA variation of sorghum MYC gene family. The findings provide insights for potential application in breeding the stress resistant and high productivity sorghum varieties. The results indicated that there are 28 MYC genes identified in sorgh

Impact of ultrasonication on the physicochemical properties of sorghum kafirin and in vitro pepsin-pancreatin digestibility of sorghum gluten-like flour.

Sorghum is a nutritionally dense grain but its nutritional quality is limited by its poor digestibility. The objective was to determine the effects of ultrasonication on the physicochemical properties of kafirin, major protein in sorghum, and its stability against pepsin-pancreatin hydrolysis (PPH). Ultrasonication for 10min at 40% amplitude increased the solubility of purified kafirin from 6.5μg/mL to 173.3μg/mL. Ultrasonication altered the secondary structure of kafirin as evaluated by circular dichroism and Fourier-transform infrared red spectroscopy. In pepsin-pancreatin hydrolysates, 14.7

Identification of O-acetylserine(thiol)lyase (OASTL) genes in sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) and gene expression analysis under cadmium stress.

Cysteine (Cys) is the first identified molecule in plant metabolism which includes both sulfur and nitrogen. It can be synthesized in three cellular compartments, containing chloroplast, cytoplasm and mitochondrion. The final step of cysteine biosynthesis is catalyzed by the O-acetylserine(thiol)lyase enzyme (OASTL, E.C. 4.2.99). In the present study, seven members of the OASTL gene family in the sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) genome were identified at a genome-wide scale and comparative bioinformatics analyses were performed between sorghum and Arabidopsis OASTLs. In all OASTL proteins, a pyridoxa

Comparison of Free Flavonoids and the Polyphenol Content in the Bran of a Newly Developed Sorghum Variety and Two Commercially Available Sorghum Varieties.

Background/Objectives: Sorghum bicolor is a source of many bioactive components, such as polyphenols. Those components are present mainly in its bran, often removed in industrial processes through decortication. In that sense, this work aimed to analyze the polyphenol content, especially free flavonoids, from the bran of a newly developed variety compared to other commercially available varieties. Methods: The samples were white sorghum TDN® Sorgho, red sorghum Mini Sorgho, and the newly developed red sorghum RILN-156. First, decortication was conducted to obtain the bran samples, which were t

Surveying the spatial distribution of feral sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.) and its sympatry with johnsongrass (S. halepense) in South Texas.

Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) is an important grain and forage crop grown across the US. In some areas, sorghum can become feral along roadsides and other ruderal areas, as a result of seed spill during harvest or transport. In some of these situations, feral sorghum grows in or near established johnsongrass (S. halepense) populations. Johnsongrass, a wild relative of sorghum and an incredibly noxious weed, is capable of hybridizing with cultivated sorghum. Because commercial hybrid sorghum cultivars are produced with cytoplasmic male sterility, progeny of the hybrid crop which compose the founder

Investigating the in-vitro antimicrobial activities of sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] phenolic extracts on liver abscess causing bacterial pathogens.

INTRODUCTION: Liver abscesses that occur in finishing cattle fed high-grain, low-roughage diets, are of significant economic concern to the feedlot industry. The causative agents include both Fusobacterium necrophorum subspecies (necrophorum and funduliforme), Trueperella pyogenes, and Salmonella enterica serotype Lubbock. Tylosin, a macrolide antibiotic, is supplemented in the feed to reduce liver abscesses. Because of the concern with emergence of potential antimicrobial resistance, there is a need to find antibiotic alternatives. The aim of our study was to investigate the efficacy of pheno

Interplay of phytohormones facilitate sorghum tolerance to aphids.

Interactions among phytohormones are essential for providing tolerance of sorghum plants to aphids. Plant's encounter with insect herbivores trigger defense signaling networks that fine-tune plant resistance to insect pests. Although it is well established that phytohormones contribute to antixenotic- and antibiotic-mediated resistance to insect pests, their role in conditioning plant tolerance, the most durable and promising category of host plant resistance, is largely unknown. Here, we screened a panel of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) inbred lines to identify and characterize sorghum tolerance
