Decoding Gender in Cough Sounds: A Transformer-Based Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Various components of speech, such as pitch, volume, and resonance, influence gender perception, but little is known about gender differences in non-speech upper airway sounds such as cough. This gap has implications for gender-affirming voice care, as coughs are harder to modulate. We aimed to explore how cough acoustics differ by gender using a transformer model with self-attention to identify salient cough features for gender classification. METHODS: We analyzed 327 cough recordings (154 male, 173 female) from the Coswara dataset, using a 70/15/15 split for model training, valid

Electroglottographic wavegrams: a technique for visualizing vocal fold dynamics noninvasively.

A method for analyzing and displaying electroglottographic (EGG) signals (and their first derivative, DEGG) is introduced: the electroglottographic wavegram ("wavegram" hereafter). To construct a wavegram, the time-varying fundamental frequency is measured and consecutive individual glottal cycles are identified. Each cycle is locally normalized in duration and amplitude, the signal values are encoded by color intensity and the cycles are concatenated to display the entire voice sample in a single image, similar as in sound spectrography. The wavegram provides an intuitive means for quickly as

Broadband sound generation by confined pulsating jets in a mechanical model of the human larynx.

Experiments were performed to study the production of broadband sound in confined pulsating jets through orifices with a time-varying area. The goal was to better understand broadband sound generation at the human glottis during voicing. The broadband component was extracted from measured sound signals by the elimination of the periodic component through ensemble averaging. Comparisons were made between the probability density functions of the broadband sound in pulsating jets and of comparable stationary jets. The results indicate that the quasi-steady approximation may be valid for the broad

Novel acoustic evaluation system for scratching behavior in itching dermatitis: rapid and accurate analysis for nocturnal scratching of atopic dermatitis patients.

Quantitative analysis of itching in patients with itching dermatitis including atopic dermatitis (AD) is indispensable for the evaluation of disease activity and response to therapy. However, the objective evaluation system for itching is limited. We have developed a new objective and quantitative scratching behavior detection system using a wristwatch-type sound detector. The scratch sound detected on the wrist is recorded on a personal computer through a filtering, squaring and smoothing process by specific hardware. Subsequently, the data is automatically processed and judged for the scratc

Differences in glottal opening pattern between Tokyo and Osaka dialect speakers: factors contributing to vowel devoicing.

In Japanese, high vowels /i/ and /u/ are often devoiced when they are preceded and followed by voiceless consonants. The phenomenon is called vowel devoicing. The frequency of its occurrence is high in dialects of eastern Japan including standard (Tokyo) Japanese and low in dialects of western Japan including Osaka dialect. It has been claimed that consonants, but not vowels, are pronounced more carefully in eastern dialects compared to western dialects, which results in higher frequency of vowel devoicing. This paper examines whether the glottal opening gesture of voiceless consonants differs

Combination of frequency and amplitude-modulated model for the synthesis of normal and wheezing sounds.

Based on communication theory, this study proposes a model to synthesize normal and wheezing sounds. The model included five parts: the flow source as a transmitter, the frequency and amplitude-modulated (FM-AM) sounds, the accompanying noise as a modulator, the airway wall as a medium, and the microphone as a receiver. The hypothesis of modulation builds on that the deviation of frequency and amplitude of the sounds which cause from the deviation of collision speed of the air flow on the wall. The model was successful to simulate the normal breath and wheezing sounds. Furthermore, it provided

Asthmatic Wheeze Detection From Compressively Sensed Respiratory Sound Spectra.

Quantification of wheezing by a sensor system consisting of a wearable wireless acoustic sensor and smartphone performing respiratory sound classification may contribute to the diagnosis, long-term control, and lowering treatment costs of asthma. In such battery-powered sensor system, compressive sensing (CS) was verified as a method for simultaneously cutting down power cost of signal acquisition, compression, and communication on the wearable sensor. Matching real-time CS reconstruction algorithms, such as orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP), have been demonstrated on the smartphone. However,

Computerized Lung Sound Screening for Pediatric Auscultation in Noisy Field Environments.

GOAL: Chest auscultations offer a non-invasive and low-cost tool for monitoring lung disease. However, they present many shortcomings, including inter-listener variability, subjectivity, and vulnerability to noise and distortions. This work proposes a computer-aided approach to process lung signals acquired in the field under adverse noisy conditions, by improving the signal quality and offering automated identification of abnormal auscultations indicative of respiratory pathologies. METHODS: The developed noise-suppression scheme eliminates ambient sounds, heart sounds, sensor artifacts, and

Sound signature for identification of tracheal collapse and laryngeal paralysis in dogs.

The aims of this study were to investigate whether upper airway sounds of dogs with laryngeal paralysis and tracheal collapse have distinct sound characteristics, compared with unaffected dogs. The sounds of 5 dogs with laryngeal paralysis and 5 dogs with tracheal collapse were recorded. Honking sound appeared as predominant clinical signs in dogs with tracheal collapse. Laryngeal stridors appeared as predominant clinical signs in dogs with experimentally produced laryngeal paralysis by resection of laryngeal nerve, in which two types of stridor, I and II, were recorded. All these sounds were

A species rules syntax model accurately organizes birdsong syllables into songs.

Birdsong is a rare example of learned vocal communication. Like speech, song consists of acoustic units (syllables) that are learned from adults and organized into temporal sequences (syntax) during development. Tutors' and pupils' syllables and syntax are often the same, suggesting that both song features are learned. Syntax is highly species-specific and consistent across individuals and populations of the same species, unlike syllables. Here, we hypothesized that song syntax can be accurately predicted by computational models based on the relationship between syllable acoustics and order th

Vocal compensation to noise in long-finned pilot whales (Globicephala melas).

Anthropogenic noise is considered a marine pollutant by the European Union and can impact marine animals in various ways. Noise that overlaps in time and frequency with animal communication signals can interfere with communication and thus impact ecological functions mediated by acoustic signals, depending on how animals compensate for increasing noise. Our study investigated Lombard responses in long-finned pilot whales using sound and movement recording tags in an area with high anthropogenic pressure, the Strait of Gibraltar. We tested if pilot whales increase their vocal amplitude in respo

Intonation drift in a capella soprano, alto, tenor, bass quartet singing with key modulation.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: When a soprano, alto, tenor, bass (SATB) quartet sings unaccompanied, or a capella, the members of the group will tend to make use of non-equal-tempered intonation to govern their tuning. If the music they are performing visits different keys and they do maintain non-equal-tempered tuning, then the pitch center will have to shift from its starting point, which is a necessary consequence of the physics behind the use of a non-equal-tempered tuning system. The implication of this shift for tuning in a capella singing is that it is not possible both to maintain accurate non

Devising an objective nasal vibration test for nasal resonatory disorders.

The present study investigates the clinical applicability of a new device, which objectively measured nasal resonating vibration via piezoelectric vibratory sensor in 10 normal volunteers, 10 patients with definite hypernasality, and 10 nasal polyposis patients. For the assessment of the hypernasality, the ratio of /ng/ to /a/ as well as the ratio of /mama/ to /papa/ passages were used. For the evaluation of hyponasality, the ratio of nasal vibration postinduced to preinduced cul-de-sac resonation was calculated. The control group showed the ratio of /ng/ to /a/ and /mama/ to /papa/ passages t

Social trills of the pipistrelle bat (Pipistrellus pipistrellus) are quieter than their echolocation calls, but have a greater range.

Under natural conditions, the sound pressure level of social trills and echolocation calls of pipistrelle bats was measured as peak equivalent sound pressure level (peSPL) with the aim of estimating the range of the signals. Thirty-eight echolocation calls and 55 social trills, whose distance from the microphone was known, were evaluated. The social trills were approximately 8 dB quieter than the echolocation calls but had a significantly greater range because of their lower call frequency. Based on the American National Standards Institute/Acoustical Society of America [ANSI/ASA (2024) S1.26-

Searching for separation between frequency-modulated calls of blue and fin whales.

Reliable differentiation of similar acoustic signals remains a major challenge for passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) of sympatric marine mammal species. Blue (Balaenoptera musculus) and fin whales (Balaenoptera physalus) produce frequency-modulated (FM) downsweeping calls with overlapping frequency ranges and durations, making species attribution difficult. This study combines long-term PAM datasets with animal-borne tag recordings to investigate how these FM calls can be reliably distinguished by species. Tag recordings with confirmed species identity showed substantial overlap in most acoust

Cognitive control of song production by humpback whales.

Singing humpback whales are highly versatile vocalizers, producing complex sequences of sounds that they vary throughout adulthood. Past analyses of humpback whale song have emphasized yearly variations in structural features of songs made collectively by singers within a population with comparatively little attention given to the ways that individual singers vary consecutive songs. As a result, many researchers describe singing by humpback whales as a process in which singers produce sequences of repeating sound patterns. Here, we show that such characterizations misrepresent the degree to wh

Likely Age-Related Hearing Loss (Presbycusis) in a Stranded Indo-Pacific Humpback Dolphin (Sousa chinensis).

The hearing of a stranded Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin (Sousa chinensis) in Zhuhai, China, was measured. The age of this animal was estimated to be ~40 years. The animal's hearing was measured using a noninvasive auditory evoked potential (AEP) method. The results showed that the high-frequency hearing cutoff frequency of the studied dolphin was ~30-40 kHz lower than that of a conspecific younger individual ~13 year old. The lower high-frequency hearing range in the older dolphin was explained as a likely result of age-related hearing loss (presbycusis).
