Arboviruses isolated and identified from mosquitoes in South Carolina (USA) are described, including new state records for eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEE), St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLE), Flanders virus, Tensaw virus (TEN), and a variant of Jamestown Canyon virus (JC). We have morphologically described and ultrastructurally analyzed Rhinosporidium seeberi, the causative agent of rhinosporidiosis, obtained from a nasal polyp of a man who had never traveled to India or Ceylon. The morphology, endosporulation phases, and cell wall were similar to those in previously described infections. A common etiology is suggested and potential therapy is discussed.

An outbreak of anthropurgic histoplasmosis occurred in rural South Carolina when a canebrake which served as a blackbird roost was cleared with a bulldozer. Seven days later the index patient became ill with histoplasmosis. Nine other patients contracted the disease, but only the index case was fatal. A survey of the membership of the South Carolina Ophthalmological Society revealed an average of 3 1/2 patient drug reactions per year per physician using topical diagnostic drugs in the office. The reactions to the drugs included topical allergic responses, acute glaucoma, cardiovascular collapse, and one death. All of the reactions had previous been attributed to these drugs in the literature. Suggestions are presented to prevent these reactions from occurring or to better prepare the ophthalmologist and his staff to manage these problems when they do arise.

Fully 150 consecutive fetal/neonatal autopsies were reviewed to determine to what extent they confirmed or altered the impressions gained through prenatal ultrasonographic fetal examination. Distinctions were made between features that may or may not be assessable by prenatal ultrasound. We report two cases of brucellosis in members of a hunt club, both of whom had killed and dressed wild boars. Serologic studies usually suffice for screening patients with suspected or possible brucellosis; however, and as illustrated by our index case, one should ask the laboratory to dilute serum out beyond the customary 1:160 titer if results are negative yet the clinical suspicion high. Hunters should be advised to wear gloves prior to dressing wild mammals.
