Trends in Substance Use Across the Nation and South Dakota.

With the discovery of morphine in the early 1800s, substance abuse quickly followed. Next came the production of heroin and other synthetic opioids, along with increases in nonmedical use of prescription medications. In the 21st century, drug abuse and addiction continues to rise nationwide with the three most common drugs abused in adolescents being marijuana, synthetic marijuana, and hallucinogens. Among adolescents and adults nationwide, rates of alcohol, opioids, and amphetamine use have increased over the last decade. In South Dakota, the most prevalent drugs consist of alcohol, methamphe…

Emerging infections and old friends: remaining prepared in South Dakota.

Recent reports of serious infection outbreaks internationally remind us of the importance of accurate information and continual vigilance. The Ebola outbreak in West Africa has captured headlines as the most severe outbreak in the history of this disease. West Nile disease, measles, pertussis and tuberculosis infect South Dakota patients on a yearly basis. A significant rise in syphilis cases has prompted recommendations for increased prenatal screening. The more unusual viral diseases, Ebola, Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) and Chikungunha virus, receive media attention but present mi…

Outbreak of Human Trichinellosis - Arizona, Minnesota, and South Dakota, 2022.

Trichinellosis is a parasitic zoonotic disease transmitted through the consumption of meat from animals infected with Trichinella spp. nematodes. In North America, human trichinellosis is rare and is most commonly acquired through consumption of wild game meat. In July 2022, a hospitalized patient with suspected trichinellosis was reported to the Minnesota Department of Health. One week before symptom onset, the patient and eight other persons shared a meal that included bear meat that had been frozen for 45 days before being grilled and served rare with vegetables that had been cooked with th

West Nile virus transmission through blood transfusion--South Dakota, 2006.

West Nile virus (WNV) transmission through blood transfusion was first reported in 2002, prompting rapid implementation of nationwide screening of blood donations for WNV by 2003. Screening strategies were developed using minipool nucleic acid-amplification testing (MP-NAT) based on six or 16 pooled donor samples. To improve sensitivity of WNV detection, blood-collection agencies (BCAs) later implemented enhanced screening by individual donation NAT (ID-NAT), most often used when a given trigger threshold of positive MP-NAT results is reached during the WNV transmission season. This approach h

Civilian outbreak of adenovirus acute respiratory disease--South Dakota, 1997.

Adenoviruses are human pathogens that commonly infect the respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts. Adenovirus infections are endemic, particularly among children, but also may cause epidemics of pharyngoconjunctival fever, keratoconjunctivitis, gastroenteritis, and acute respiratory disease (ARD) among military trainees. Outbreaks of ARD among adults in the civilian sector are rare. In March 1997, an outbreak of acute respiratory disease (ARD) caused by adenovirus serotype 11 occurred among students at a job training facility in South Dakota. This report summarizes the epidemiologic and clinic…

Mind Matters: South Dakota's Public Health Response to Dementia.

Alzheimer's disease and related dementias pose a growing health and societal challenge in South Dakota, where dementia ranks as the fourth leading cause of death. The burden extends beyond patients to families and caregivers, many of whom report significant emotional, financial, and physical strain. In response, the South Dakota Department of Health introduced the South Dakota Healthy Brain Initiative. This statewide effort aims to improve brain health across the lifespan, promote earlier detection, strengthen caregiver support, and prepare the state's workforce to better respond to the needs …

A Rare Combination of Bleeding Disorders in South Dakota: A Case Report.

Hemophilia A is a clotting disorder due to factor VIII deficiency, leading to prolonged bleeding. Acquired hemophilia A results from the immune system attacking factor VIII, typically occurring later in life. Factor V Leiden is a genetic mutation causing abnormal blood clot formation, primarily in veins. This mutation is inheritable and increases the risk of clotting. A combination of these conditions is extremely rare. Correct management of a patient with any bleeding disorder is imperative for a surgical case to prevent catastrophe. We present a surgical case involving both hemophilia A and

An Evaluation of SPOT Vision Screening Efficacy for Children in South Dakota.

BACKGROUND: Amblyopia is a preventable, sight stealing disorder with a prevalence of approximately 2-4 percent in the U.S. pediatric population. Identifying efficacious, early stage screening modalities is of critical importance to sustain quality of vision and quality of life. This project assessed the quality of screening methods used in the Children's Vision Screening Initiative (CVSI), administered by Northern Plains Eye Foundation in collaboration with Western South Dakota Lions Clubs, by comparing to data collected in follow-up appointments at professional eye care clinics. METHODS: Dat…

Results of a pediatric vision screening program in western South Dakota.

BACKGROUND: South Dakota is one of eight states that do not require any vision screening for children. This study describes the results of the first children's vision screening program in the state. METHODS: Children ages 6 months to 12 years were screened using the SPOT photoscreener by lay volunteers as part of the Northern Plains Eye Foundation's Western South Dakota Children's Vision Screening Initiative (CVSI). Referral criteria were based on the recommendations of the manufacturer. Data was stratified by age group, sex, and percentage of children referred for hyperopia, myopia, astigmat…

Epidemiologic Study of Bacteria Zoonotic Diseases in South Dakota: 2010-2014.

BACKGROUND: Although the burden of infectious diseases has decreased dramatically due to advances in health care, disease prevention and numerous public health efforts and innovations, zoonotic diseases continue to pose a problem in terms of both existing and emerging diseases. These risks are of particular concern in rural areas, in which there is more contact with animals for occupational and recreational purposes. As a rural and agricultural state, South Dakota has a large percentage of its population at risk of exposure to zoonotic diseases through their substantial contact time with anima…

Ectoparasites of black-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus) from South Dakota.

During the summers of 1982 and 1983, black-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus) were examined for parasites. Those collected and their respective prevalence included Linognathoides cynomyis (46.3%), Opisocrostis hirsutus (53.7%), Opisocrostis tuberculatus cynomuris (2.4%), Androlaelaps fahrenholzi (12.2%), Ixodes sculptus (2.4%) and Dermacentor andersoni (4.9%). The collection data indicated that L. cynomyis, O. hirsutus and A. fahrenholzi were at low population densities during this period.

The Epidemic of Congenital Syphilis in the Indigenous and Rural Populations of South Dakota.

From 2020 to 2023, South Dakota witnessed a substantial increase in cases of congenital syphilis (CS), with the highest rates identified in rural and Native American (NA) communities. Here, we discuss 3 severe cases of CS in premature infants born to NA individuals and communities in South Dakota with poor access to prenatal care. The infants in these 3 cases presented with varying clinical conditions, including respiratory failure, persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn, severe direct hyperbilirubinemia, feeding intolerance, and necrotizing enterocolitis. Lack of prenatal care and o…

Factors influencing productivity of eastern wild turkeys in northeastern South Dakota.

Population growth is highly sensitive to changes in reproductive rates for many avian species. Understanding how reproductive rates are related to environmental conditions can give managers insight into factors contributing to population change. Harvest trends of eastern wild turkey in northeastern South Dakota suggest a decline in abundance. We investigated factors influencing reproductive success of this important game bird to identify potential factors contributing to the decline. We monitored nesting rate, nest survival, renesting rate, clutch size, hatchability, and poult survival of 116 …
