HIV prevalence and behavioral risk factors in the Sudan People's Liberation Army: Data from South Sudan.

OVERVIEW: After two decades of civil war, South Sudan has limited published data on HIV prevalence and behavioral determinants of HIV infection risk. A surge in HIV/AIDS prevalence is a real concern for this new country with limited access to medical or HIV preventive services, and low education and literacy levels. We present findings from the first bio-behavioral surveillance survey conducted within the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA). METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of 1,149 randomly selected soldiers from thirteen SPLA bases was conducted in two phases: July to August 2010 and Apr…

Gut microbiome associations with acute malnutrition relapse in South Sudan.

Severe acute malnutrition (SAM) is a leading cause of childhood morbidity and mortality that is defined by anthropometric measurements, weig … icted microbial functional pathways, of children discharged from treatment for uncomplicated SAM in South Sudan, may be associated with AM relapse at 1-month follow-up. Overall, broad microbiome profiles at discharge were not associated with AM relapse. We evaluated the associations of microbiome features with AM relapse 1-month post-recovery using mixed line …

Cutaneous emergence of Eustrongylides in two persons from South Sudan.

Two large, living worms were collected as they emerged from the lower limb of each of two persons in South Sudan. The worms were observed by staff of the South Sudan Guinea Worm Eradication Program during surveillance activities in communities at-risk for cases of Guinea worm disease (dracunculiasis). The worms measured 7 and 8 cm in length and were identified as fourth-stage larvae of Eustrongylides. This is the first report of such worms emerging from the skin; all five previous reports of human infection involved surgical removal of worms from the peritoneal cavity.

Accelerating onchocerciasis elimination in humanitarian settings: lessons from South Sudan.

There is persistent meso- and hyperendemicity of onchocerciasis (river blindness) in South Sudan, a country that has endured armed conflict for many years. In 2018, Amref Health Africa, in collaboration with local communities, the South Sudan Ministry of Health and other stakeholders, initiated some interventions, among which was Innovative Approaches to Reduce the Burden of Disease Caused by Onchocerciasis (IARDO) project. This project implemented several strategies, including identifying areas where onchocerciasis elimination programs need strengthening, switching from annual to biannual com…

Traditional surgeons in sub-Saharan Africa: images from south Sudan.

Itinerant traditional surgeons work throughout sub-Saharan Africa and perform many procedures including: tooth extraction, abortion, injections, incising and draining abscesses, uvulectomy, circumcision, inguinal hernia surgery, non-invasive cataract luxation, and surgery on closed and open fractures. Cutting and injection equipment are not cleaned and are used on a rapid succession of up to 10 patients in a single clinic session. These procedures cause haemorrhage, septicaemia, tetanus, gangrene, contractures, abscesses, airway obstruction, keloids, iatrogenic fistulae, lacerations of vital o

Plasmodium falciparum Histidine-Rich Protein 2 and 3 Gene Deletions in Strains from Nigeria, Sudan, and South Sudan.

Deletion of histidine-rich protein genes pfhrp2/3 in Plasmodium falciparum causes infections to go undetected by HRP2-based malaria rapid diagnostic tests. We analyzed P. falciparum malaria cases imported to Australia (n = 210, collected 2010-2018) for their pfhrp2/3 status. We detected gene deletions in patients from 12 of 25 countries. We found >10% pfhrp2-deletion levels in those from Nigeria (13.3%, n = 30), Sudan (11.2%, n = 39), and South Sudan (17.7%, n = 17) and low levels of pfhrp3 deletion from Sudan (3.6%) and South Sudan (5.9%). No parasites with pfhrp2/3 double deletions were dete…

Improved Neonatal Mortality at a District Hospital in Aweil, South Sudan.

Neonatal deaths comprise a growing proportion of global under-five mortality. However, data from the highest-burden areas is sparse. This descriptive retrospective study analyses the outcomes of all infants exiting the Médecins sans Frontières-managed neonatal unit in Aweil Hospital, rural South Sudan from 2011 to 2014. A total of 4268 patients were treated over 4 years, with annual admissions increasing from 687 to 1494. Overall mortality was 13.5% (n = 576), declining from 18.7% to 11.1% (p for trend <0.001). Newborns weighing <2500 g were at significantly increased mortality risk compared w…

Advance distribution of misoprostol for the prevention of postpartum hemorrhage in South Sudan.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if high uterotonic coverage can be achieved in South Sudan through a facility- and community-focused postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) prevention program. METHODS: The program was implemented from October 2012 to March 2013. At health facilities, active management of the third stage of labor (AMTSL) was emphasized. During prenatal care and home visits, misoprostol was distributed to pregnant women at approximately 32 weeks of pregnancy for the prevention of PPH at home births. Data on uterotonic coverage and other program outcomes were collected through facility registers, h…

The impact of dracunculiasis on the nutritional status of children in South Kordofan, Sudan.

This paper assesses the indirect impact of dracunculiasis on the nutritional status of children under 6 years of age in South Kordofan, Sudan. Weight-for-height anthropometric measurement was used as a measure of the nutritional status of 774 children in 428 households. The indirect impact was investigated by comparing the nutritional status in 1988 of children in 'affected' households, where more than half the adult members had suffered from dracunculiasis in 1987, with children in other households. It was anticipated that when the otherwise able adult members of a households had dracunculias

A Mathematical Study to Control Visceral Leishmaniasis: An Application to South Sudan.

In this manuscript, we propose and analyze a compartmental model of visceral leishmaniasis (VL). We model the human population with six comp … lly significant responses. We validate our model by calibrating it to weekly VL incidence data from South Sudan for the year 2013. We perform cost-effectiveness analysis on different interventions: treatment, non-adult control, adult control and their different layered combinations based on their implementation cost (in USD) and case reduction. We also use a …

Decreasing epilepsy-related mortality in the Maridi onchocerciasis focus, South Sudan.

INTRODUCTION: A 2018 study found high epilepsy prevalence and mortality in the Maridi onchocerciasis focus (South Sudan). From 2019 onward, onchocerciasis elimination measures were strengthened in Maridi, and in 2020, an epilepsy clinic was established at Maridi County Hospital with free provision of anti-seizure medication. We investigated the changes in epilepsy-related mortality following these interventions. METHODS: Repeated house-to-house surveys (2018 and 2024) in three Maridi neighbourhoods (Kazana-1, Kazana-2, Hai-Gabat). The number of deaths that occurred during the two years preced…

Risk Factors for Sustained Cholera Transmission, Juba County, South Sudan, 2014.

We conducted a case-control study to identify risk factors for the 2014 cholera outbreak in Juba County, South Sudan. Illness was associated with traveling or eating away from home; treating drinking water and receiving oral cholera vaccination were protective. Oral cholera vaccination should be used to complement cholera prevention efforts.

Diversity and geographic distribution of soil streptomycetes with antagonistic potential against actinomycetoma-causing Streptomyces sudanensis in Sudan and South Sudan.

BACKGROUND: Production of antibiotics to inhibit competitors affects soil microbial community composition and contributes to disease suppression. In this work, we characterized whether Streptomyces bacteria, prolific antibiotics producers, inhibit a soil borne human pathogenic microorganism, Streptomyces sudanensis. S. sudanensis represents the major causal agent of actinomycetoma - a largely under-studied and dreadful subcutaneous disease of humans in the tropics and subtropics. The objective of this study was to evaluate the in vitro S. sudanensis inhibitory potential of soil streptomycetes
