Reframing Mother-Child Closeness and Cooperative Caregiving: A Comparative Study of Two Hunter-Gatherer Populations.

OBJECTIVES: Caregiving during early childhood emerges from a dynamic interplay between maternal and allomaternal contributions. This study aimed to challenge polarized portrayals of hunter-gatherer childcare as either "mother-centered" or "cooperative" and provide empirical evidence for an integrative cross-cultural approach. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We compared caregiving structures in two hunter-gatherer populations positioned at contrasting ends of a continuum of child-rearing strategies: the !Xun in southern Africa, portrayed as emphasizing mother-child closeness, and the Baka in central Af

Childhood parasitic infections endemic to the United States.

Endemic parasitic infections in the United States are more frequent than is commonly perceived. Intestinal parasitic infection with Cryptosporidium, Dientamoeba, and Giardia occurs most often in children in northern states during the summer months. Zoonotic Toxocara and Toxoplasma parasitic infections are more frequent in southern states, in African Americans, and in populations with lower socioeconomic status. Approximately 300, 000 people in the United States have Trypanosoma cruzi infection. Local, vector-borne transmission of T cruzi and Leishmania infections has been documented in souther

A catalogue of early diverged contemporary human genome variation reveals distinct Khoe-San populations.

Creating a catalogue of early diverged genome variation is critical to determine the true extent of human diversity and associated medical impact. Generating deep whole genome data for 150 Khoe-San (12 groups, 1 unclassified), and 40 regionally comparative Southern Africans (3 groups), we identify ~30 million small-to-large variants - over 1.3 million unknown single nucleotide variants. Representing shared traditionally forager lifestyles and click-speaking languages, we identify San and Damara as separate phylogenetic lineages, contributing two admixture waves to Nama. While San represented m

Human African trypanosomiasis cases diagnosed in non-endemic countries (2011-2020).

BACKGROUND: Sleeping sickness, or human African trypanosomiasis (HAT), is transmitted by tsetse flies in endemic foci in sub-Saharan Africa. Because of international travel and population movements, cases are also occasionally diagnosed in non-endemic countries. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Antitrypanosomal medicines to treat the disease are available gratis through the World Health Organization (WHO) thanks to a public-private partnership, and exclusive distribution of the majority of them enables WHO to gather information on all exported cases. Data collected by WHO are complemented by c

Toxoplasma gondii Infections in Animals and Humans in Southern Africa: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Toxoplasma gondii is an apicomplexan parasite with zoonotic importance worldwide especially in pregnant women and immunocompromised people. This study is set to review the literature on T. gondii infections in humans and animals in southern Africa. METHODS: We extracted data regarding T. gondii infections from published articles from southern Africa from 1955 to 2020 from four databases, namely Google Scholar, PubMed, EBSCO Host, and Science Direct. Forty articles from eight southern African countries were found eligible for the study. RESULTS: This review revealed a paucity

A review of the traditional use of southern African medicinal plants for the treatment of malaria.

ETHNOPHARMALOGICAL RELEVANCE: Malaria is one of the most prevalent and deadly parasitic diseases globally, with over 200 million new cases and nearly 500,000 deaths reported annually. It is estimated that approximately half of the world's population lives in malaria endemic areas. Malaria is substantially less prevalent in South Africa than in other African regions and the disease is limited to some regions of the Limpopo, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal provinces. However, it still has a significant impact on the health of the populations living in those regions. Traditional medicines have long

Epidemiology, surveillance and control of the principal infectious animal diseases in Africa.

The author presents detailed information on traditional methods, the majority of which remain in use, for the recognition, prevention and treatment of the principal infectious diseases prevalent on the African continent. The information provided relates to the observations and practices of peoples in three main regions, namely West, East and Southern Africa. Data are presented for ten diseases of major importance, with the widest range of practices being recorded for the control of foot and mouth disease, rinderpest and anthrax.

SP alpha I/65 hereditary elliptocytosis in Calabria (southern Italy).

The alpha I/65 variant of spectrin has been described in black people, in North Africans and recently in two southern Italian families. This variant is associated in the heterozygous state with mild Hereditary Elliptocytosis (HE) and the molecular basis of the defect is invariably the duplication of TTG at codon 154 of the alpha spectrin gene. The present study reports the identification of five Calabrian families with SP alpha I/65 HE and their distribution in the population.

Placental fibrosis and microvascular dysfunction in gestational diabetes mellitus: histopathological and ultrastructural evidence from a South African cohort.

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a pregnancy-associated metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia and chronic low-grade inflammation, both contributing to placental dysfunction. This study investigated placental pathology in a South African cohort. GDM placentas demonstrated increased fibrin deposition and altered villous stromal architecture, consistent with a stressed placental microenvironment. Polarized light microscopy revealed heterogeneous collagen birefringence patterns, indicating disrupted extracellular matrix organization with a shift in type I and type III collagen ba

Adverse childhood experiences and cognition: A cross-sectional study in Xhosa people living with schizophrenia and matched medical controls.

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with impaired cognitive function in adult life in the general population as well as in people living with schizophrenia (PLS). Research on cognitive function in PLS in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) is, however, limited. The objectives of this study were to investigate the association between ACE types and various cognitive domains in a sample of PLS and matched medical controls, and to determine the moderating effect of group membership (PLS vs. medical controls) on these associations, in the South African setting. Epidemiological considerations of the present status and future growth of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome epidemic in South Africa.

Limited epidemiological data on acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection have been assembled by voluntarily reported AIDS figures, blood donor serum prevalence and high-risk sentinel population and random background population sero-prevalence studies. The HIV epidemic in South Africa can thus be shown to consist of four separate epidemics of which the heterosexual epidemic will undoubtedly constitute the major growth in this country. Intervention must be directed to shrinking the promiscuous core which sustains this epidemic by directing attent

Geoepidemiological big data approach to sarcoidosis: geographical and ethnic determinants.

In sarcoidosis, a rare multiorgan disease of unknown aetiology characterised by non-caseating epitheloid cell granulomas, three geoepidemiological factors are major aetiopathogenic factors: geolocation, ethnicity, and personal environment. Geographically, sarcoidosis is mainly reported in the Northern Hemisphere, with the highest incidence rates uniformly reported in countries located at the highest latitudes. The main geoepidemiological-driven differences across the world are of greater female involvement in Southern Europe, the Southern US and Japan, a differentiated radiological pattern (pr

HIV self-testing and clinician-administered testing in Southern Africa: a systematic review of programmatic outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: In 2024, an estimated 5.3 million of 40.8 million people with HIV (PWH) globally were unaware of their status, with Southern Africa bearing the highest regional burden. This review synthesizes programmatic evidence on HIV testing uptake, test positivity, and linkage to care across clinician-administered testing and HIVST in Southern Africa. DESIGN: Systematic review with pooled programme-level outcomes analyses of HIV testing outcomes. METHODS: Searches were conducted for studies published between 2020 and 2025 from Southern African countries using Medline, Embase and OVID Global

Oculocutaneous albinism in southern Africa: Historical background, genetic, clinical and psychosocial issues.

Albinism is an inherited condition associated with significant depigmentation of the skin, hair and eyes. It occurs in every population with varying frequency, and narratives of people with albinism have been recorded since 200 BC. In southern Africa albinism is common, about 1 in 4000 people are affected, but it remains a poorly understood condition surrounded by myths and superstition. This article provides a historical background on oculocutaneous albinism (OCA) in southern Africa and presents relevant information from the literature regarding epidemiology, genetics and genetic counselling,

Spatial distribution and determinants of HIV high burden in the Southern African sub-region.

BACKGROUND: Spatial analysis at different levels can help understand spatial variation of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, disease drivers, and targeted interventions. Combining spatial analysis and the evaluation of the determinants of the HIV burden in Southern African countries is essential for a better understanding of the disease dynamics in high-burden settings. METHODS: The study countries were selected based on the availability of demographic and health surveys (DHS) and corresponding geographic coordinates. We used multivariable regression to evaluate the determinants of

Substance use disparities by age, race, sex, and sexual orientation among persons living with HIV in the Southern U.S.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol and drug use is overrepresented among individuals living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and is associated with poor health outcomes. Determining the extent to which substance use differs between demographic profiles of people living with HIV (PLWH) would determine at-risk groups that would benefit from intervention. METHODS: Cross-sectional screening data (N = 1307, Mage = 42.7 years, 66% male, 86% African American, 39% sexual minority) was examined from an HIV clinic in the southern U.S. largely treating underserved and low-income patients. Assistive technology for people with deafblindness in Southern Africa: a Delphi study exploring dimensions of impact.

PURPOSE: Assistive technology (AT) is a highly effective intervention to address the capability gap for people living with deafblindness. The My AT Outcomes Framework (MyATOF) is a novel Australian framework founded upon AT process principles and outcomes research. It guides stakeholders to articulate AT use according to 6 dimensions. MyATOF was developed as a data collection and knowledge translation tool. The use case of AT by people with deafblindness in Southern Africa was investigated in this study to determine the applicability of MyATOF dimensions to (a) people with deafblindness and (b

Zulu ocular biometry differs fundamentally from that of Europeans - A modelling analysis.

PURPOSE: The accuracy of ocular refraction calculations depends on reliable biometry and the validity of the models upon which the calculations are based. Most models are based on European eyes, so their validity in sub-Saharan Africans may be questioned, potentially contributing to suboptimal postoperative outcomes. Hence, this study developed an optical eye model tailored to a Zulu cohort. METHODS: Ocular biometry data were collected from 192 near-emmetropic (i.e., non-cycloplegic spherical equivalent within ±1D) young individuals of Zulu descent in Durban, South Africa.
