Sex-specific cardiometabolic responses during microgravity simulation in European Space Agency VIVALDI dry immersion.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to microgravity is marked by enhanced physical inactivity, reduced gravitational loading and fluid shifts. These characteristics provide a unique model for medical research. Dry immersion is used as a ground-based model to simulate and investigate some of the physiological effects of microgravity experienced by astronauts (body fluid shifts, lack of mechanical support, unloading of the musculoskeletal system and hypokinesia). To date, there is limited knowledge about the effect of sex on cardiovascular and metabolic responses to dry immersion. METHODS: This study integrat

Immunocompetent cells producing humoral mediators of bone tissue mineral metabolism during space flight simulation.

During 120-day and 370 day hypokinesia the possibility has been shown of manifestation of mechanism of immunological regulation of osteoclast functions. Supernatants of mononuclear peripheral blood cells which were in vitro nitrogen-stimulated, had an increased potential for resorption in 45Ca-labelled mice fetus long bone organ cultures. Resorbing activity was increased in mononuclear supernatants from some of the subjects exposed to 120-day hypokinesia and from all subjects exposed to 370-day hypokinesia. This variable returned to base-line values after completion of the bed-rest period. Lym

Early changes to the extracellular space in the hippocampus under simulated microgravity conditions.

The smooth transportation of substances through the brain extracellular space (ECS) is crucial to maintaining brain function; however, the way this occurs under simulated microgravity remains unclear. In this study, tracer-based magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and DECS-mapping techniques were used to image the drainage of brain interstitial fluid (ISF) from the ECS of the hippocampus in a tail-suspended hindlimb-unloading rat model at day 3 (HU-3) and 7 (HU-7). The results indicated that drainage of the ISF was accelerated in the HU-3 group but slowed markedly in the HU-7 group. The tortuosit

Biological space experiments for the simulation of Martian conditions: UV radiation and Martian soil analogues.

The survivability of resistant terrestrial microbes, bacterial spores of Bacillus subtilis, was investigated in the BIOPAN facility of the European Space Agency onboard of Russian Earth-orbiting FOTON satellites (BIOPAN I -III missions). The spores were exposed to different subsets of the extreme environmental parameters in space (vacuum, extraterrestrial solar UV, shielding by protecting materials like artificial meteorites). The results of the three space experiments confirmed the deleterious effects of extraterrestrial solar UV radiation which, in contrast to the UV radiation reaching the s

Computationally efficient long-distance free-space optical simulation using a continuous-scaling angular spectrum method.

We propose a continuous-scaling angular spectrum (CSAS) method for efficient long-distance free-space optical (FSO) propagation simulation. By combining multistep propagation with continuously updated sampling intervals, the method maintains a constant sampling size and avoids the large computational grids required by conventional angular spectrum (AS) approaches. Under an aperture-limited framework, only the spatial-frequency components contributing to the received optical power (ROP) are preserved, and a low-frequency energy ratio is introduced to quantify the relevant spectral content. Digital Cardiovascular Biomarker Responses to Transcutaneous Cervical Vagus Nerve Stimulation: State-Space Modeling, Prediction, and Simulation.

BACKGROUND: Transcutaneous cervical vagus nerve stimulation (tcVNS) is a promising alternative to implantable stimulation of the vagus nerve. With demonstrated potential in myriad applications, ranging from systemic inflammation reduction to traumatic stress attenuation, closed-loop tcVNS during periods of risk could improve treatment efficacy and reduce ineffective delivery. However, achieving this requires a deeper understanding of biomarker changes over time. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to reveal the dynamics of relevant cardiovascular biomarkers, extracted from wearable se

Raman spectroscopy as a tool for assessing plant growth in space and on lunar regolith simulants.

Colonization of the Moon and other planets is an aspiration of NASA and may yield important benefits for our civilization. The feasibility of such endeavors depends on both innovative engineering concepts and the successful adaptation of life forms that exist on Earth to inhospitable environments. In this study, we investigate the potential of Raman spectroscopy (RS) in a non-invasive and non-destructive assessment of changes in the biochemistry of plants exposed to zero gravity on the International Space Station and during growth on lunar regolith simulants on Earth. We report that RS can sen

Applying objective metrics to neurosurgical skill development with simulation and spaced repetition learning.

OBJECTIVE: Surgical skills laboratories augment educational training by deepening one's understanding of anatomy and allowing the safe practice of technical skills. Novel, high-fidelity, cadaver-free simulators provide an opportunity to increase access to skills laboratory training. The neurosurgical field has historically evaluated skill by subjective assessment or outcome measures, as opposed to process measures with objective, quantitative indicators of technical skill and progression. The authors conducted a pilot training module with spaced repetition learning concepts to evaluate its fea

Simulation of wind-temperature-density measurement in near space by spaceborne Fe resonance fluorescence Doppler lidar.

Spaceborne resonance fluorescence Doppler lidar uses metal atoms as tracers to detect atmospheric temperature, wind speed, and metal atom number density from the top of the mesosphere to the bottom of the thermosphere in the global atmosphere. This study proposes a concept of spaceborne Fe resonance fluorescence Doppler lidar (spaceborne Fe lidar). To theoretically analyze the feasibility of this technology, key parameters of the lidar were designed. Starting from the lidar equation, the echo signal intensity of spaceborne Fe lidar and the random error of atmospheric parameters were simulated

Calibration and simulation of a silicon dosemeter for ambient dose equivalent in low-earth orbit space.

A particle dosemeter (PD) is a payload of NEXTSat-2 in the low-earth orbit (LEO). The absorbed dose in LEO needs to be converted into the ambient dose equivalent (H*(10)). Due to a mixed field in LEO, the calibration factors (klow and khigh) should be determined for the low-and high-linear energy transfers (LET) (below and above 1.5 keV/μm), respectively. The PD was irradiated with a 137Cs source at the Korea Radiation Solution facility to obtain H*(10) and absorbed doses. However due to the lack of sources for the high-LET calibration, H*(10) and an absorbed dose were calculated by simulating

Survival of NASA-cleanroom microbial isolates under simulated space and Martian conditions.

Planetary protection hinges on understanding microbial survival following reduction procedures, the stressors of space travel, and exposure to extraterrestrial environmental conditions. This study identified 23 fungal strains isolated from NASA spacecraft assembly cleanrooms, capable of surviving ultraviolet radiation exposure. Using experimental simulation facilities, we conducted a comprehensive assessment of microbial survivability and morphology on the most resilient spacecraft-associated microorganisms. Aspergillus calidoustus demonstrated remarkable survival under simulated Martian condi

The potential of the lichen symbiosis to cope with the extreme conditions of outer space II: germination capacity of lichen ascospores in response to simulated space conditions.

Complementary to the already well-studied microorganisms, lichens, symbiotic organisms of the mycobiont (fungi) and the photobiont (algae), were used as "model systems" in which to examine the ecological potential to resist to extreme environments of outer space. Ascospores (sexual propagules of the mycobiont) of the lichens Fulgensia bracteata, Xanthoria elegans and Xanthoria parietina were exposed to selected space-simulating conditions (up to 16 h of space vacuum at 10(-3) Pa and UV radiation at 160 nm < or = lambda < or = 400 nm), while embedded in the lichen fruiting bodies. Frontal Polymerization of Epoxy Resins: Kinetic Modeling, Rate Regulation and Curing Process Simulation for Space Manufacturing Applications.

Frontal polymerization (FP) technology has attracted significant attention as an efficient, low-energy curing method for thermosetting resins. By enabling self-sustaining polymerization reactions, FP significantly reduces curing time and minimizes external energy dependence, making it ideal for in-orbit manufacturing applications. In contrast to traditional curing methods, which are limited by high energy consumption and low efficiency, FP offers a more efficient and flexible alternative. Nonetheless, the FP process is sensitive to material composition, processing and environmental factors, re

Physics-Informed Simulation and Time-Series Classification of Ground-Based Infrared Radiant-Intensity Sequences for Space Objects.

Under ground-based observation geometry, infrared radiant-intensity sequences of space objects are jointly influenced by object micromotion, thermal radiation, time-varying viewing conditions, and atmospheric propagation. Existing simulation studies often prescribe the line of sight or simplify the coupling between viewing geometry and atmospheric attenuation, which limits long-duration ground-based sequence analysis. This study develops a physics-informed framework for generating atmosphere-attenuated infrared radiant-intensity sequences of space objects undergoing precession or tumbling. The

1D and 3D co-simulation and self-adaptive position control of electrostatic levitation in China's Space Station.

The greatest challenge of electrostatic levitation for containerless material processing is the stable control of charged material during heating. Recently, high-precision self-adaptive control of electrostatic levitation has been achieved in China's Space Station. Based on the 1D and 3D co-simulation analysis, an optimal scheduling of control strategies of sample release and retrieval in space is developed. Both simulation results and on-orbit experiments demonstrated that the inversion of surface charge is responsible for the heating induced material instability. On-orbit experiments indicat

Coupling Computational Fluid Dynamics Simulations and Statistical Moments for Designing Healthy Indoor Spaces.

Cross-contamination between occupants in an indoor space may occur due to transfer of infectious aerosols. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) provides detailed insight into particle transport in indoor spaces. However, such simulations are site-specific. This study couples CFD with statistical moments and establishes a framework that transitions site-specific results to generating guidelines for designing "Работает" indoor spaces. Eighteen cases were simulated, and three parameters were assessed: inlet/outlet location, air changes per hour, and the presence/absence of desks. Aerosol release due

Cervical neural space narrowing during simulated rear crashes with anti-whiplash systems.

PURPOSE: Chronic radicular symptoms have been documented in whiplash patients, potentially caused by cervical neural tissue compression during an automobile rear crash. Our goals were to determine neural space narrowing of the lower cervical spine during simulated rear crashes with whiplash protection system (WHIPS) and active head restraint (AHR) and to compare these data to those obtained with no head restraint (NHR). We extrapolated our results to determine the potential for cord, ganglion, and nerve root compression. METHODS: Our model, consisting of a human neck specimen within a BioRID

Loss of Cognitive Flexibility Practice Effects in Female Rats Exposed to Simulated Space Radiation.

During the planned missions to Mars, astronauts will be faced with many potential health hazards including prolonged exposure to space radiation. Ground-based studies have shown that exposure to space radiation impairs the performance of male rats in cognitive flexibility tasks which involve processes that are essential to rapidly and efficiently adapting to different situations. However, there is presently a paucity of information on the effects of space radiation on cognitive flexibility in female rodents. This study has determined the impact that exposure to a low (10 cGy) dose of ions from

Quantitative orientation preference and susceptibility to space motion sickness simulated in a virtual reality environment.

Orientation preference should appear when variable weightings of spatial orientation cues are used between individuals. It is possible that astronauts' orientation preferences could be a potential predictor for susceptibility to space motion sickness (SMS). The present study was conducted to confirm this relationship on Earth by quantifying orientation preferences and simulating SMS in a virtual reality environment. Two tests were carried out. The first was to quantitatively determine one's orientation preference. Thirty-two participants' vision and body cue preferences were determined by meas
