Space-time clustering and temporal trend analysis of pulmonary tuberculosis in Brazil, 2010-2023.

BACKGROUND: Identifying high-risk areas for pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) is essential for understanding the dynamics of disease transmission and for guiding more effective control strategies. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the temporal trends and spatiotemporal distribution of PTB across Brazilian municipalities between 2010 and 2023. METHODS: This is an ecological study using data on PTB cases reported in Brazil's Notifiable Diseases Information System (SINAN) from 2010 to 2023. Time series analysis, global and local spatial autocorrelation, and space-time scan techniques were applie

Space-time clustering and seasonality in diagnosing skin cancers in Wallonia (south-east Belgium).

BACKGROUND: In Westernized populations, the number of diagnosed cases of primary cutaneous cancers, particularly malignant melanomas and basal cell carcinomas (BCC), has been previously shown to fluctuate during specific periods of the year. OBJECTIVE AND METHOD: The aim of the present 6-year study was to explore the seasonality if any in skin cancer detection in Wallonia (south-east Belgium). RESULTS: For both malignant melanomas and BCC late spring/early summer and mid-autumn were the periods of highest diagnosis prevalence irrespective of gender. The amplitude of this bimodal evolution re

Detection of space-time clusters and epidemiological examinations of scabies in chamois.

In this paper some methodological approaches towards the detection of temporal, spatial and space-time clusters are presented and discussed in context with epidemiological factors of scabies in chamois. This presentation comprises in particular the use of the Scan Test (Wallenstein, 1980) for the detection of temporal clusters and the tests developed by Knox (1964) and Mantel (1967) for the testing of spatiotemporal interactions. Between 1952 and 1998 a total of 1689 cases of scabies in chamois and six cases in ibex were documented in 137 game preserves of the Austrian province of Styria. The

Time and space clusters of the French-Canadian M1V phenylketonuria mutation in France.

We performed mutation analysis and RFLP haplotype analysis of chromosomes associated with classical phenylketonuria (PKU) in contemporary French families. We also did genealogical reconstructions for seven obligate carriers in five contemporary French-Canadian families living in eastern Quebec, who carry the M1V mutation causing PKU. The M1V mutation, heretofore considered to be associated exclusively with French-Canadians, was found on 4 of 152 independent French chromosomes. The French and Quebec M1V mutations all occurred on RFLP haplotype 2. The contemporary mutant French chromosomes clust

A space-time cluster of adverse events associated with canine rabies vaccine.

Electronic medical records of a large veterinary practice were used for surveillance of potential space-time clustering of adverse events associated with rabies vaccination in dogs. The study population was 257,564 dogs vaccinated in 169 hospitals in 13 US metropolitan areas during a 24-month period. Using a scan statistic for population rate data, significant space-time clusters were identified involving the Atlanta and Tampa/St. Petersburg areas during a 4-month period. Separate spatial-temporal analyses of these cities using coordinates for individual address coordinates identified one sign

Is there a common aetiology for certain childhood malignancies? Results of cross-space-time clustering analyses.

We previously demonstrated significant space-time clustering amongst cases of childhood leukaemia (in particular acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL)), central nervous system (CNS) tumour (especially astrocytoma), soft tissue sarcoma and Wilms' tumour. We hypothesised that there may be common aetiological mechanisms between some of these diagnostic groups. To test this hypothesis we analysed for cross-space-time clustering between these diagnostic groups, using population-based data from north-west England. Data were examined by a second-order procedure based on K-functions. Reference points in

Space-time clustering of childhood high hyperdiploid B-cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia: a nationwide Swedish study.

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common childhood malignancy. While space-time clustering of ALL cases has been suggested, only one prior study has examined clustering by genetic subtype. We investigated space-time clustering of childhood ALL in Sweden, both overall and by genetic subtype. The cohort included 1,629 children age 0-18 years diagnosed with ALL between 1992 and 2017, comprising 1,446 B-cell precursor ALL (BCP-ALL) and 183 T-cell ALL (T-ALL) cases. Two BCP-ALL subgroups were analyzed: high hyperdiploidy (HeH, n = 466) and ETV6::RUNX1 (n = 225). The Unbiased Knox Test

Congenital Hypothyroidism: Space-Time Clustering of Thyroid Dysgenesis Indicates a Role for Environmental Factors in Disease Etiology.

Background: The etiology of most cases of congenital hypothyroidism (CHT) due to thyroid dysgenesis (DG) is unknown. If transient environmental factors can impact on thyroid gland development, then clustering of cases in time and/or space may occur, and this would be more likely in thyroid DG than dyshormonogenesis (DHG). Methods: The newborn screening program for CHT in Scotland is linked to a central database that includes case details such as postcode. The etiology of CHT is investigated in many cases of CHT using scintigraphy and/or ultrasonography. We looked for evidence of a change in CH

Epidemiological update on spatial and space-time clusters of African swine fever in the Philippines.

African swine fever (ASF), particularly the highly contagious Genotype II strain, is a transboundary viral disease causing up to 100% mortality in swine and threatening food security across the Asia-Pacific region. Since 2019, control strategies in the Philippines have relied on depopulation and strict administrative zoning to limit contiguous, land-based spread. However, the long-term effectiveness of these approaches within the country's fragmented archipelagic landscape remains poorly understood, complicating evidence-based resource allocation and preparedness for regional vaccination campa

Evolution of spatial disease clusters via a Bayesian space-time variability modelling.

This study proposes to use exceedance posterior probabilities of a space-time random-effects model to study the temporal dynamics of clusters. The local time trends specified for each area is further smoothed over space. We modelled the common spatial and the space-varying temporal trend using a multivariate Markov Random field to incorporate within-area correlations. We estimate the model parameters within a fully Bayesian framework. The exceedance posterior probabilities are further used to classify the common spatial trend into hot-spots, cold-spots, and neutral-spots. The local time trends

A CUSUM framework for detection of space-time disease clusters using scan statistics.

Several methods for timely detection of emerging clusters of diseases have recently been proposed. We focus our attention on one of the most popular types of method; a scan statistic. Different ways of constructing space-time scan statistics based on surveillance theory are presented. We bridge the ideas from space-time disease surveillance, public health surveillance and industrial quality control and show that previously suggested space-time scan statistics methods can be fitted into a general CUSUM framework. Crucial differences between the methods studied are due to different assumptions a
