Task-aware conformal power envelopes for multi-horizon spacecraft monitoring.

Reliable spacecraft power monitoring requires uncertainty estimates across forecast horizons and consistency between primitive electrical states and derived power. We present a task-aware conformal framework that selects joint residual geometry according to downstream power-envelope efficiency. A residual iTransformer produced point centres for five primitive electrical states at 1, 5, and 15 min. Candidate geometries were fitted, selected, and calibrated on chronologically separated complete-orbit blocks, and the final evaluation comprised 25,278 forecast origins from the chronologically subs

Survival of spacecraft-associated microorganisms under simulated martian UV irradiation.

Spore-forming microbes recovered from spacecraft surfaces and assembly facilities were exposed to simulated Martian UV irradiation. The effects of UVA (315 to 400 nm), UVA+B (280 to 400 nm), and the full UV spectrum (200 to 400 nm) on the survival of microorganisms were studied at UV intensities expected to strike the surfaces of Mars. Microbial species isolated from the surfaces of several spacecraft, including Mars Odyssey, X-2000 (avionics), and the International Space Station, and their assembly facilities were identified using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Forty-three Bacillus spore lines wer

Motion prediction of tumbling uncooperative spacecraft during proximity operations.

The relative attitude estimation between chasers and uncooperative targets is an important prerequisite for executing in orbit service (OOS) tasks. Only by efficiently obtaining relative pose parameters can chasers design close-range rendezvous trajectories close to uncooperative targets. The focus of this article is on active systems, such as TOF cameras or LIDAR. This paper proposes an attitude estimation scheme to obtain relative attitude parameters between uncooperative targets. This scheme utilizes LIDAR to obtain three-dimensional point clouds of non-cooperative targets, extracts key poi

DMSP Poynting Flux: Data Processing and Inter-Spacecraft Comparisons.

Poynting flux (PF) calculated from low Earth orbit spacecraft in situ ion drift and magnetic field measurements is an important measure of energy exchange between the magnetosphere and ionosphere. Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) spacecraft provide an extensive back-catalog of ion drift and magnetic perturbation measurements, from which quasi-steady PF could be calculated. However, since DMSP are operations-focused spacecraft, data must be carefully preprocessed for research use. We describe an automated approach for calculating earthward PF focusing on pre-processing and qualit

Experimental and numerical investigation on micro-motion characteristics of lightweight spacecraft.

Accurate prediction of micro-motion characteristics is essential to the success of space mission operations. In this paper, the lightweight spacecraft is selected as the research object. Firstly, the micro-motion characteristic test device is designed to carry out the micro-motion experiment, and the micro-motion characteristic of the test device is numerically simulated to verify the accuracy of the model compared with test data. On this basis, the angular velocity interferences of different values and different directions are simulated, and it is verified that the transversal initial interfe

Plasma wave observations from Juno spacecraft at the Jovian bow shock.

Recent observations of Jupiter's bow shock have provided new insights into the energy dissipation mechanisms associated with bow shocks of outer planets. At greater distances from the Sun, the typically increasing super-Alfvénic nature of the solar wind leads to higher-energy bow shocks with enhanced dissipation requirements. Research on Earth's bow shock suggests that plasma waves (e.g., ion-acoustic waves, waves driven by the electron cyclotron drift instability, electrostatic solitary waves, and whistler mode waves) play a critical role in converting solar wind bulk kinetic energy into ther

Complex-Domain Semantic Segmentation of Spacecraft Directly from ISAR Echoes.

Semantic segmentation technology based on Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar (ISAR) images can provide crucial perception and analytical capabilities for intelligent safety maintenance of on-orbit spacecraft. However, conventional semantic segmentation methods suffer from three main limitations: firstly, the lack of modeling for radar physical characteristics in the "image first, segment later" pipeline leads to loss of scattering information and phase details; secondly, reliance on extensive pixel-level manual annotation increases application costs; thirdly, ineffective utilization of spacecraf

Multisorbent tubes for collecting volatile organic compounds in spacecraft air.

The sampling capability of Tenax-TA tubes, used in the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's solid sorbent air sampler to trap and concentrate contaminants from air aboard spacecraft, was improved by incorporating two sorbents within the tubes. Existing tubes containing only Tenax-TA allowed highly volatile compounds to "break through" during collection of a 1.5 L air sample. First the carbon molecular sieve-type sorbents Carboxen 569 and Carbosieve S-III were tested for their ability to quantitatively trap the highly volatile compounds. Breakthrough volumes were determined with the

Revisions to Acute/Off-Nominal Limits for Benzene in Spacecraft Air.

BACKGROUND: The previous short-term (1-h and 24-h) Spacecraft Maximal Allowable Concentrations (SMACs) for benzene were established at 10 and 3 ppm by NASA in 1996, based on a study of mice in which no hematological effects were noted following two 6-h exposures to benzene. When the benzene SMACs were updated in 2008, there was no revision to the short-term SMAC limits. Rather, that effort developed a long-term SMAC (1000-d) for Exploration mission scenarios.Acute benzene exposures can cause numerous neurological effects, and long-term exposure to low levels is well-known to cause acute myeloi

Identification of volatile organic compound markers for bacterial growth in spacecraft wastewater.

As humans move beyond low-Earth orbit, where resupply of water will be impractical or impossible, systems that can ensure the provision of safe, clean, recycled water are critical. Current methods of microbial detection for spacecraft water are crew time- and consumable-dependent and would not be possible during periods of dormancy. One potential method for microbial detection that can be performed remotely and without sample preparation is the analysis of headspace to determine if specific volatile organic compounds (VOC) are present. Here, the use of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-

Research on Monitoring Methods for Electrostatic Discharge Pulses in Spacecraft Dielectric Materials.

Space particle radiation induces charging and discharging phenomena in spacecraft dielectric materials, leading to electrostatic discharge (ESD) and electromagnetic pulses (EMP), which pose significant risks to spacecraft electronic systems by causing interference and potential damage. Accurate and timely monitoring of these phenomena, combined with a comprehensive understanding of their underlying mechanisms, is critical for developing effective protection strategies against satellite charging effects. Addressing in-orbit monitoring requirements, this study proposes the design of a compact sl

Coupled position and attitude control of a servicer spacecraft in rendezvous with an orbiting target.

Rendezvous is one of the fundamental phases of on-orbit servicing (OOS) missions. Since it requires high accuracy and safety, modeling is an indispensable part. Therefore, this article puts forward an approach for boosting the exactitude of the final proximity phase of a servicer spacecraft using precise modeling. Unlike other similar works that solely use linear models to design controllers, this paper employs a fully nonlinear model and considers most possible uncertainties and disturbances. In this regard, first a complete nonlinear relative pose (i.e., concurrent position attitude) motion

Making Waves: Mirror Mode Structures Around Mars Observed by the MAVEN Spacecraft.

We present an in-depth analysis of a time interval when quasi-linear mirror mode structures were detected by magnetic field and plasma measurements as observed by the NASA/Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN spacecraft. We employ ion and electron spectrometers in tandem to support the magnetic field measurements and confirm that the signatures are indeed mirror modes. Wedged against the magnetic pile-up boundary, the low-frequency signatures last on average ∼ 10  s with corresponding sizes of the order of 15-30 upstream solar wind proton thermal gyroradii, or 10-20 proton gyroradii in th

Initial cooperative alignment control for non-contact annular electromagnetic stabilized spacecraft.

The non-contact annular electromagnetically stabilized spacecraft (NCAESS) is an effective solution to improve the attitude control performance. However, a critical issue that must be addressed is the initial alignment control problem when the two modules are released into the non-contact state during on-orbit operation. This paper proposes a two-module cooperative alignment control method based on the nonlinear disturbance rejection model predictive control (NDRMPC) algorithm, which guarantees both collision avoidance and rapid stabilization of the NCAESS. Compared with the traditional method

SU-Net: pose estimation network for non-cooperative spacecraft on-orbit.

The estimation of spacecraft pose is crucial in numerous space missions, including rendezvous and docking, debris removal, and on-orbit maintenance. Estimating the pose of space objects is significantly more challenging than that of objects on Earth, primarily due to the widely varying lighting conditions, low resolution, and limited amount of data available in space images. Our main proposal is a new deep learning neural network architecture, which can effectively extract orbiting spacecraft features from images captured by inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) for pose estimation of non-co

Monocular Pose Estimation of an Uncooperative Spacecraft Using Convexity Defect Features.

Spacecraft relative pose estimation for an uncooperative spacecraft is challenging because the target spacecraft neither provides sensor information to a chaser spacecraft nor contains markers that assist vision-based navigation. Moreover, the chaser does not have prior pose estimates when initiating the pose estimation. This paper proposes a new monocular pose estimation algorithm that addresses these issues in pose initialization situations for a known but uncooperative target spacecraft. The proposed algorithm finds convexity defect features from a target image and uses them as cues for mat

An RBFNN-Based Prescribed Performance Controller for Spacecraft Proximity Operations with Collision Avoidance.

In the mission scenario of On-Orbit Assembly (OOA), servicing spacecraft are frequently tasked with towing large-scale, flexible truss structures to designated assembly sites. This process involves complex coupled dynamics between the spacecraft and the flexible payload, which are often unmodeled or unknown, posing significant challenges to control precision. Furthermore, the proximity of other assembled structures in the construction area necessitates strict collision avoidance. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a novel adaptive robust controller for spacecraft thruster-based o
