Modeling Spatial Synchronization of Sleep for Detection of Idiopathic REM Sleep Behavior Disorder.

Idiopathic REM sleep behavioral disorder (iRBD) is a parasomnia and is considered a prodromal stage of Parkinson's Disease (PD). The golden standard of diagnosis is through visual analysis of a polysomnography (PSG) recording, which is resource-intensive. There is a need for better markers for severity evaluation and sub-typing. We developed a method to investigate and quantify the synchronization of brain activity as measured by electroencephalogram (EEG) during sleep. Using hypnodensities, an automatically derived sleep stage probability distribution, we evaluated sleep synchronization acros

Effects of anticoagulant rodenticide poisoning on spatial behavior of farm dwelling Norway rats.

Commensal rodent species cause damage to crops and stored products, they transmit pathogens to people, livestock and pets and threaten native flora and fauna. To minimize such adverse effects, commensal rodents are predominantly managed with anticoagulant rodenticides (AR) that can be transferred along the food chain. We tested the effect of the uptake of the AR brodifacoum (BR) by Norway rats (Rattus norvegicus) on spatial behavior because this helps to assess the availability of dead rats and residual BR to predators and scavengers. BR was delivered by oral gavage or free-fed bait presented

Temporal and spatial behavior of pharmaceuticals in Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, United States.

The behavior and fate of pharmaceutical ingredients in coastal marine ecosystems are not well understood. To address this, the spatial and temporal distribution of 15 high-volume pharmaceuticals were measured over a 1-yr period in Narragansett Bay (RI, USA) to elucidate factors and processes regulating their concentration and distribution. Dissolved concentrations ranged from below detection to 313 ng/L, with 4 pharmaceuticals present at all sites and sampling periods. Eight pharmaceuticals were present in suspended particulate material, ranging in concentration from below detection to 44 ng/g

Effects of prenatal alcohol exposure on the hippocampus: spatial behavior, electrophysiology, and neuroanatomy.

Prenatal exposure to alcohol can result in fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS), characterized by growth retardation, facial dysmorphologies, and a host of neurobehavioral impairments. Neurobehavioral effects in FAS, and in alcohol-related neurodevelopmental disorder, include poor learning and memory, attentional deficits, and motor dysfunction. Many of these behavioral deficits can be modeled in rodents. This paper reviews the literature suggesting that many fetal alcohol effects result, at least in part, from teratogenic effects of alcohol on the hippocampus. Neurobehavioral studies show that animal

Impairment of emotional behavior and spatial learning in adult Wistar rats by ferrous sulfate.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of FeSO(4) on the behavior of adult Wistar rats. Rats were treated with moderate doses of iron (1.5 or 3.0 mg/kg) for 5 consecutive days, and the effects of iron supplementation on emotional behavior were studied. One group of rats was tested in elevated plus-maze and in open field, and other group was tested for learning abilities in water maze and for motor skills in rotarod task. Iron level in the brain was measured in the frontal cortex, cerebellum, basal ganglia and hippocampus. The effects of the iron treatment (in particular, a dose o

Relationships among childhood sex-atypical behavior, spatial ability, handedness, and sexual orientation in men.

Moderate support was obtained in a sample of 101 gay, bisexual, and heterosexual males for the perinatal hormone theory, which hypothesizes that attenuated levels of androgens during critical periods of male fetal development fail to masculinize and defeminize the brain. Affected individuals develop female-typical sexual orientation (assessed here by a pie chart) and cerebral organization, reflected in visual-spatial abilities and gender nonconformity. Handedness, also thought to reflect in utero hormone exposure, was evaluated. Gay and bisexual males reported greater femininity and lesser mas

Chronic Mild Circadian Disruption Alters Anxiety-Like Behavior and Spatial Navigation in Adult Mice.

Sleep and circadian disruption adversely impacts mental health and physiology. Such disruption varies in degree and emerges from numerous causes, ranging from severe disruption arising from rotating shift work or frequent jetlag to more mild circadian stress experienced by people with circadian rhythm sleep disorders (CRSD). While the effects of extreme circadian disruption such as jetlag are established through animal studies, less is understood about more subtle mismatches between external zeitgeber cycles and internal circadian periods as is observed with CRSDs. The present study employed a

Spatial clusters, temporal behavior, and risk factors analysis of rabies in livestock in Ecuador.

Rabies, a globally distributed and highly lethal zoonotic neglected tropical disease, has a significant impact in South America. In Ecuador, animal rabies cases are primarily linked to livestock, and hematophagous bats play a crucial role in disease transmission. This study aims to identify temporal trends, spatial patterns, and risk factors for animal rabies in Ecuador between 2014 and 2019. Epidemiological survey reports from the official Animal Rabies Surveillance Program of the Phyto and Zoosanitary Regulation and Control Agency of Ecuador (AGROCALIDAD) were used. The Animal Rabies Surveil

Brain Perfusion Bridges Virtual-Reality Spatial Behavior to TPH2 Genotype for Head Acceleration Events.

Neuroimaging demonstrates that athletes of collision sports can suffer significant changes to their brain in the absence of concussion, attributable to head acceleration event (HAE) exposure. In a sample of 24 male Division I collegiate football players, we examine the relationships between tryptophan hydroxylase 2 (TPH2), a gene involved in neurovascular function, regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) measured by arterial spin labeling, and virtual reality (VR) motor performance, both pre-season and across a single football season. For the pre-season, TPH2 T-carriers showed lower rCBF in two le

The chronic exposure to abamectin causes spatial memory deficit and depressive behavior in mice.

It is known that abamectin (ABA), which is a component belonging to the group of avermectins, has been broadly used as biopesticide. Although its effect on non-target aquatic organisms is known, knowledge about its impacts on terrestrial animals such as mammals remains incipient. Thus, we aim at investigating the effects (phycical and neural-behavioral) from the chronic exposure (90 days) to ABA (1/10 of LD50) on Swiss and C57Bl/6J mice from both sexes. Accordingly, at the end of the experimental period the animals were subjected to the following tests: Novel Object Recognition Test (NORT), Mo

Understanding the pusher behavior of some stroke patients with spatial deficits: a pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether pusher behavior (ie, a tendency among stroke patients with spatial deficits to actively push away from the nonparalyzed side and to resist any attempt to hold a more upright posture) affects only the trunk, for which gravitational feedback is given by somesthetic information, or the head as well, whose gravitational information is mainly given by the vestibular system (without vision). DESIGN: Description and measurement of clinical features. SETTING: Rehabilitation center research laboratory. PARTICIPANTS: Eight healthy subjects age matched to 14 patients

Distinct retinal pathways drive spatial orientation behaviors in zebrafish navigation.

Navigation requires animals to adjust ongoing movements in response to pertinent features of the environment and select between competing target cues. The neurobiological basis of navigational behavior in vertebrates is hard to analyze, partly because underlying neural circuits are experience dependent. Phototaxis in zebrafish is a hardwired navigational behavior, performed at a stage when larvae swim by using a small repertoire of stereotyped movements. We established conditions to elicit robust phototaxis behavior and found that zebrafish larvae deploy directional orienting maneuvers and reg

Ketamine Alters Tuning of Neural and Behavioral Spatial Working Memory Precision.

BACKGROUND: Working memory (WM) is a key element of cognition that depends on accurate internal representation of stimuli and often impaired in psychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia. Prior human neuropharmacological studies with ketamine suggest that glutamate N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors (NMDARs) are critical for spatial WM (sWM), with NMDAR antagonism attenuating task-evoked neural activation and reducing WM accuracy. Animal studies, at the cellular level, and cortical microcircuit models hypothesize that NMDAR antagonism impairs sWM by decreasing the specificity of neuronal respo

Disengagement of attention with spatial neglect: A systematic review of behavioral and anatomical findings.

The present review examined the consequences of focal brain injury on spatial attention studied with cueing paradigms, with a particular focus on the disengagement deficit, which refers to the abnormal slowing of reactions following an ipsilesional cue. Our review supports the established notion that the disengagement deficit is a functional marker of spatial neglect and is particularly pronounced when elicited by peripheral cues. Recent research has revealed that this deficit critically depends on cues that have task-relevant characteristics or are associated with negative reinforcement. Atte

A framework to identify structured behavioral patterns within rodent spatial trajectories.

Animal behavior is highly structured. Yet, structured behavioral patterns-or "statistical ethograms"-are not immediately apparent from the full spatiotemporal data that behavioral scientists usually collect. Here, we introduce a framework to quantitatively characterize rodent behavior during spatial (e.g., maze) navigation, in terms of movement building blocks or motor primitives. The hypothesis that we pursue is that rodent behavior is characterized by a small number of motor primitives, which are combined over time to produce open-ended movements. We assume motor primitives to be organized i

Behavioral, temporal, and spatial targets for cellular transplants as adjuncts to rehabilitation for stroke.

Stem cell and more differentiated neural cell transplantation strategies are an intriguing approach for neural repair to augment rehabilitation interventions after stroke. In the cortex, exogenous cells could create, augment, or extend in time endogenous peri-infarct and remote molecular signals, such as those for neurogenesis, cell differentiation, axonal and dendritic sprouting, network connectivity, and long-term potentiation, as well as deliver engineered genes and provide replacement cells in a network. If demyelinated axons exist in the periphery of an infarct, they could be targets for

Visuo-spatial orienting during active exploratory behavior: Processing of task-related and stimulus-related signals.

Functional imaging studies have associated dorsal and ventral fronto-parietal regions with the control of visuo-spatial attention. Previous studies demonstrated that the activity of both the dorsal and the ventral attention systems can be modulated by many different factors, related both to the stimuli and the task. However, the vast majority of this work utilized stereotyped paradigms with simple and repeated stimuli. This is at odd with any real life situation that instead involve complex combinations of different types of co-occurring signals, thus raising the question of the ecological sig

Long-lasting effects of neonatal ionizing radiation exposure on spatial memory and anxiety-like behavior.

Neonatal ionizing radiation exposure has been shown to induce a cerebellar cytoarchitecture disarrangement. Since cerebellar abnormalities have been linked to an impairment of behavioral functions, the aim of the present work was to investigate whether exposure of developing rats to ionizing radiations can produce behavioral deficits in the adult. Male Wistar rats were X-irradiated with 5Gy within 48h after birth and were tested in a radial maze and in an open field at 30 and 90 days post irradiation. Irradiated rats showed significative changes in spatial, exploratory, and procedural paramete

Effect of horse sleep behavior on performance in a field-side spatial reversal learning test.

Reduced rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep is associated with impaired learning in many species. We developed a reversal learning test (RLT) suitable for field conditions to explore this association in 16 healthy horses. Nocturnal REM-like sleep behavior was recorded five times for 48 h over a six-week period. The horses performed a target training task followed by an RLT using two objects. When the horses reached a predefined frequency of touching the object, the spatial location was reversed. Mean test parameters were statistically analysed using GENLIN models, longitudinal continuous variables

Cornichon Homolog-3 (Cnih3) deletion impairs spatial memory, operant learning, and fentanyl self-administration behavior.

Opioid misuse remains rampant as new synthetic opioids reach the market. Large-scale genetic tools like the GWAS identify previously unrecognized targets and biomarkers in opioid misuse with the hopes of combating the opioid epidemic. One such target is the α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid receptor (AMPAR) auxiliary protein Cornichon Homolog-3 (human analog: CNIH3, mouse analog: Cnih3), which determines AMPAR subunit composition and kinetics: important factors in opioid use. Though CNIH3 was identified as a gene of interest in OUD, its role in opioid use and related behavio
