Non-spatial water radial-arm maze learning in mice.

Recently, we published a method for examining working and reference memory in mice using a spatial version of the water radial-arm maze. Here we describe a non-spatial version of the same maze. BXSB mice were able to learn the maze as shown by the decrease in the number of working and reference memory errors over sessions. This maze was used to examine learning differences between males and females and between mice with misplaced clusters of neurons in layer I of cortex (ectopias) and those without. In a prior study using the spatial version of the water radial-arm maze, male BXSB mice had poo

Evidence for abstract spatial concept learning in young animals.

Encoding abstract spatial relations (above-below, left-right, inside-outside) is essential for navigation and object recognition. The ability to form abstract categories is particularly advantageous for young animals, as it supports efficient environmental encoding during development. However, research has largely focused on adult animals, with limited data on human infants and no evidence on young non-human animals. To investigate the emergence of abstract category learning and its underlying mechanisms in minimally experienced animals, we tested day-old domestic chicks (Gallus gallus). Durin

Caloric Restriction Improves Spatial Learning Deficits in Tau Mice.

BACKGROUND: Caloric restriction (CR) has been recognized for its benefits in delaying age-related diseases and extending lifespan. While its effects on amyloid pathology in Alzheimer's disease (AD) mouse models are well-documented, its effects on tauopathy, another hallmark of AD, are less explored. OBJECTIVE: To assess the impact of a short-term 30% CR regimen on age-dependent spatial learning deficits and pathological features in a tauopathy mouse model. METHODS: We subjected male PS19 tau P301S (hereafter PS19) and age-matched wildtype mice from two age cohorts (4.5 and 7.5 months old) to

[Visual field prediction based on temporal-spatial feature learning].

Glaucoma stands as the leading irreversible cause of blindness worldwide. Regular visual field examinations play a crucial role in both diagnosing and treating glaucoma. Predicting future visual field changes can assist clinicians in making timely interventions to manage the progression of this disease. To integrate temporal and spatial features from past visual field examination results and enhance visual field prediction, a convolutional long short-term memory (ConvLSTM) network was employed to construct a predictive model. The predictive performance of the ConvLSTM model was validated and c

Rapid Spatial Learning Controls Instinctive Defensive Behavior in Mice.

Instinctive defensive behaviors are essential for animal survival. Across the animal kingdom, there are sensory stimuli that innately represent threat and trigger stereotyped behaviors such as escape or freezing [1-4]. While innate behaviors are considered to be hard-wired stimulus-responses [5], they act within dynamic environments, and factors such as the properties of the threat [6-9] and its perceived intensity [1, 10, 11], access to food sources [12-14], and expectations from past experience [15, 16] have been shown to influence defensive behaviors, suggesting that their expression can be

Spatial Learning Requires mGlu5 Signalling in the Dorsal Hippocampus.

We examined the role of hippocampal metabotropic glutamate receptor 5 (mGlu5) in spatial learning and memory. Although it has been shown that mGlu5 signalling is required for certain forms of learning and memory, its role in spatial learning is unclear since studies using pharmacological or knockout mice models provide inconsistent findings. Additionally, the location in the brain where mGlu5 signalling may modulate such learning is yet to be precisely delineated. We stereotaxically injected rAAV-Cre into the dorsal hippocampus of mGlu5(loxP/loxP) mice to knockdown mGlu5 in that region. We sho

Deterioration of spatial learning performances in lipopolysaccharide-treated mice.

It is well demonstrated that acute or chronic stress leads to reduction of learning ability. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a component of the outer membrane of gram-negative bacteria, induces profound physiological and behavioral changes, including fever, decrease in food motivation, and decrease in social behavior. These changes might be interpreted as an acute stress reaction to the LPS. In the present study, therefore, we investigated the effects of LPS (400-800 microg/kg, i.p.) on spatial learning performances using C57BL/6J male mice. In the Morris water-maze task, spatial learning performanc

Impaired spatial learning after saturation of long-term potentiation.

If information is stored as activity-driven increases in synaptic weights in the hippocampal formation, saturation of hippocampal long-term potentiation (LTP) should impair learning. Here, rats in which one hippocampus had been lesioned were implanted with a multielectrode stimulating array across and into the angular bundle afferent to the other hippocampus. Repeated cross-bundle tetanization caused cumulative potentiation. Residual synaptic plasticity was assessed by tetanizing a naïve test electrode in the center of the bundle. Spatial learning was disrupted in animals with no residual LTP

Learning Invariant Object and Spatial View Representations in the Brain Using Slow Unsupervised Learning.

First, neurophysiological evidence for the learning of invariant representations in the inferior temporal visual cortex is described. This includes object and face representations with invariance for position, size, lighting, view and morphological transforms in the temporal lobe visual cortex; global object motion in the cortex in the superior temporal sulcus; and spatial view representations in the hippocampus that are invariant with respect to eye position, head direction, and place. Second, computational mechanisms that enable the brain to learn these invariant representations are proposed

Lateralization of spatial-memory processes: evidence on spatial span, maze learning, and memory for object locations.

Spatial memory is one of the most important cognitive functions in daily life, enabling us to locate objects in our environment or to learn a route or a path. In the present study, we elaborated on the hypothesis that human spatial memory consists of multiple sub-processes, relying on different brain structures. Therefore, 50 patients with an ischemic stroke and 40 healthy participants underwent tests measuring spatial span and maze learning. By means of a computer paradigm the following aspects of memory for object locations were assessed: (1) object location binding; (2) positional memory; (

A model of the learning of arm trajectories from spatial deviations.

Abstract Unconstrained point-to-point reaching movements performed in the horizontal plane tend to follow roughly straight hand paths with smooth, bell-shaped velocity profiles. The objective of the research reported here was to explore the hypothesis that these data reflect an underlying learning process that prefers simple paths in space. Under this hypothesis, movements are learned based only on spatial errors between the actual hand path and a desired hand path; temporally varying targets are not allowed. We designed a neural network architecture that learned to produce neural commands to

Spatial-Frequency Learning for Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy Image Enhancement.

Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (STEM) enables the observation of atomic arrangements at sub-angstrom resolution and plays a key role in the discovery and characterization of advanced materials. Raw STEM images are often noisy and blurred due to multiple degradations. Although recent deep learning methods improve STEM images, their performance remains limited under severe degradations. In this work, we propose a spatial-frequency learning framework for STEM image enhancement. Specifically, we design a spatial-frequency fusion network that exploits periodic atomic arrangements in the

Hypergraph-Driven Heterogeneous Spatial Relationship Learning for Remote Sensing Segmentation.

Remote sensing semantic segmentation is critical for extracting fine-grained spatial information in applications such as urban planning and environmental monitoring. However, existing methods face significant challenges in modeling heterogeneous spatial relationships within complex urban scenes, where semantically related regions are spatially dispersed yet functionally interdependent. Conventional convolutional neural networks exhibit limited receptive fields that fail to capture long-range dependencies, while Transformer-based approaches capture global dependencies but do not explicitly mode

Deep learning-enabled scaffolding of spatial arrays of PfCSP epitopes.

Malaria is a leading cause of disease in developing countries. The licensed malaria vaccine RTS,S/AS01 confers partial protection in part due to the elicitation of circumsporozoite protein (CSP) antibodies, of which those to the CSP repeat and junctional regions offer the most potent protection. Anti-repeat region antibodies, including the protective antibody L9, frequently develop mutations that promote inter-Fab contacts when bound to CSP in "spiral" quaternary structures. As a first step toward the design of immunogens that elicit L9-like antibodies, we utilized generative deep learning mod

Learning a spatial-temporal texture transformer network for video inpainting.

We study video inpainting, which aims to recover realistic textures from damaged frames. Recent progress has been made by taking other frames as references so that relevant textures can be transferred to damaged frames. However, existing video inpainting approaches neglect the ability of the model to extract information and reconstruct the content, resulting in the inability to reconstruct the textures that should be transferred accurately. In this paper, we propose a novel and effective spatial-temporal texture transformer network (STTTN) for video inpainting. STTTN consists of six closely re

Functional dissociation between fornix and hippocampus in spatial conditional learning.

Do lesions of the fornix or the hippocampus impair the performance of spatial conditional associative learning tasks, and to what extent does damage to these brain structures result in comparable deficits in this type of spatial behavior? The available evidence is not clear. In the present study, rats with lesions of the fornix, hippocampus, and normal control animals were trained on two spatial-visual conditional learning tasks in which they had to form arbitrary associations between visual stimuli and the context in which these stimuli were embedded. In one condition, rats were required to c

Selective corticosteroid antagonists modulate specific aspects of spatial orientation learning.

Receptors for mineralocorticoids (MRs) and glucocorticoids (GRs) display a high concentration and distinct distribution in the hippocampus. The effects of corticosteroids on behavior mediated by central MRs and GRs were assessed in rats. Spatial navigation is considered to be a sensitive measure for hippocampal functioning. Removal of circulating corticosteroids (via adrenalectomy) impaired spatial learning. In intact rats, blockade of central MRs and GRs by intracerebroventricular injection of selective MR and GR antagonists influenced different aspects of spatial learning. The analysis of th
