The effects of hearing impairment and aging on spatial processing.

OBJECTIVES: Difficulty in understanding speech in background noise is frequently reported by hearing-impaired people despite well-fitted amplification. Understanding speech in the presence of background noise involves segregating the various auditory stimuli into distinct streams using cues such as pitch characteristics, spatial location of speakers, and contextual information. One possible cause of listening difficulties in noise is reduced spatial-processing ability. Previous attempts to investigate spatial processing in hearing-impaired people have often been confounded by inadequate stimul

Spatial frames of reference and somatosensory processing: a neuropsychological perspective.

In patients with lesions in the right hemisphere, frequently involving the posterior parietal regions, left-sided somatosensory (and visual and motor) deficits not only reflect a disorder of primary sensory processes, but also have a higher-order component related to a defective spatial representation of the body. This additional factor, related to right brain damage, is clinically relevant: contralesional hemianaesthesia (and hemianopia and hemiplegia) is more frequent in right brain-damaged patients than in patients with damage to the left side of the brain. Three main lines of investigation

Cortical asymmetries at different spatial hierarchies relate to phonological processing ability.

The ability to map speech sounds to corresponding letters is critical for establishing proficient reading. People vary in this phonological processing ability, which has been hypothesized to result from variation in hemispheric asymmetries within brain regions that support language. A cerebral lateralization hypothesis predicts that more asymmetric brain structures facilitate the development of foundational reading skills like phonological processing. That is, structural asymmetries are predicted to linearly increase with ability. In contrast, a canalization hypothesis predicts that asymmetrie

Cortical Contrast Processing in Retinitis Pigmentosa: Evidence of PVEPs Spatial Functions.

OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of check width size of the stimuli on the amplitude and latency of the P100 component of visual evoked potentials recorded in patients with retinitis pigmentosa (RP). METHODS: Pattern reversal visual evoked potentials (PVEPs) were recorded in 16 RP patients and 20 visually normal subjects. Pattern reversal stimuli with five different check widths and 100% of contrast were projected in the right eye of both patients and control subjects. PVEPs induced by stimuli with 78%, 16%, and 6% of contrast were also recorded in 10 of the control subjects. RESULTS: In RP pa

Monitoring Multiple Deadlines Relies on Spatial Processing in Posterior Parietal Cortex.

Proactively coordinating one's actions is an important aspect of multitasking performance due to overlapping task sequences. In this study, we used fMRI to investigate neural mechanisms underlying monitoring of multiple overlapping task sequences. We tested the hypothesis that temporal control demands in multiple-task monitoring are offloaded onto spatial processes by representing patterns of temporal deadlines in spatial terms. Results showed that increased demands on time monitoring (i.e., responding to concurrent deadlines of one to four component tasks) increasingly activated regions in th

EEG source reconstruction reveals frontal-parietal dynamics of spatial conflict processing.

Cognitive control requires the suppression of distracting information in order to focus on task-relevant information. We applied EEG source reconstruction via time-frequency linear constrained minimum variance beamforming to help elucidate the neural mechanisms involved in spatial conflict processing. Human subjects performed a Simon task, in which conflict was induced by incongruence between spatial location and response hand. We found an early (∼200 ms post-stimulus) conflict modulation in stimulus-contralateral parietal gamma (30-50 Hz), followed by a later alpha-band (8-12 Hz) conflict mod

Dyslexia: a deficit in visuo-spatial attention, not in phonological processing.

Developmental dyslexia affects up to 10 per cent of the population and it is important to understand its causes. It is widely assumed that phonological deficits, that is, deficits in how words are sounded out, cause the reading difficulties in dyslexia. However, there is emerging evidence that phonological problems and the reading impairment both arise from poor visual (i.e., orthographic) coding. We argue that attentional mechanisms controlled by the dorsal visual stream help in serial scanning of letters and any deficits in this process will cause a cascade of effects, including impairments

Spatial and numerical processing in children with non-verbal learning disabilities.

Consistently with the idea that numbers and space interact with each other, the present paper aimed to investigate the impact of non-verbal learning disabilities (NVLD) on spatial and numerical processing. In order to do so, 15 NVLD and 15 control children were required to perform different spatial (the line bisection and Simon tasks) and numerical tasks (the number bisection, number-to-position and numerical comparison tasks). In every task, NVLD children presented lower accuracy scores than the control group. While both groups manifested similar pseudo-neglect and Simon effects, they however

Microphone array signal processing with application in three-dimensional spatial hearing.

Microphone arrays are known to enhance the directionality and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) over single-channel sensors. This is considered beneficial in many applications such as video-conferencing systems and hearing aids. However, this advantage comes at the price of the sensation of spatial hearing. The spatial cues due to diffractions of the head and torso are lost if the array is not fitted in the ears. In this paper we present a system that incorporates binaural hearing synthesis into array signal processing, in an attempt to recover the three-dimensional sound image that a human listener

Optimizing cell segmentation and downstream processing for plant probe-based spatial transcriptomics.

Probe-based spatial transcriptomics platforms use predefined oligonucleotide panels to detect selected RNAs in tissue sections while preserving transcript spatial coordinates. Accurate cell segmentation is required for reliable transcript-to-cell assignments. This analytical process is affected in plant tissues by cell walls, large vacuoles, and strong autofluorescence, which often reduce boundary contrast and elevate background. Nucleus-only segmentation with fixed-distance expansion can be an alternative approach, but it underestimates cellular area and morphology and reduces the number of a

Brain Substrates for Distinct Spatial Processing Components Contributing to Hemineglect in Humans.

Several cortical and sub-cortical regions in the right hemisphere, particularly in parietal and frontal lobe, but also in temporal lobe and thalamus, are part of neural networks critically implicated in spatial and attentional functions. Damage to different sites within these networks can cause hemispatial neglect. The aim of this study was to identify the neural substrates of different spatial processing components that are known to contribute to neglect symptoms. First, three different spatial tasks (visual search, bisection, and visual memory) were tested in 27 patients with focal right bra

Individual differences in spatial relation processing: effects of strategy, ability, and gender.

Numerous studies have focused on the distinction between categorical and coordinate spatial relations. Categorical relations are propositional and abstract, and often related to a left hemisphere advantage. Coordinate relations specify the metric information of the relative locations of objects, and can be linked to right hemisphere processing. Yet, not all studies have reported such a clear double dissociation; in particular the categorical left hemisphere advantage is not always reported. In the current study we investigated whether verbal and spatial strategies, verbal and spatial cognitive

Spatial processing in Bálint syndrome and prosopagnosia: a study of three patients.

BACKGROUND: Spatial analysis may be subdivided into between-object and within-object spatial coding. We investigated the contribution of various visual cues to grouping processes that might determine whether single or multiple objects were perceived and therefore which type of spatial coding would be used for a stimulus. METHODS: We asked three patients to make shape judgments with a series of displays showing triangular arrangements, moving from more implicit triangles defined by separate objects at the apices (between-object spatial coding) to more explicit triangles with line edges or surf

Individual differences in FFA activity suggest independent processing at different spatial scales.

The brain processes images at different spatial scales, but it is unclear how far into the visual stream different scales remain segregated. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we found evidence that BOLD activity in the fusiform face area (FFA) reflects computations based on separate spatial frequency inputs. When subjects perform different tasks (attend location vs. identity; attend whole vs. parts) or the same task with different stimuli (upright or inverted) with high- and low-pass images of cars and faces, individual differences in the FFA in one condition are correlated with tho

Spatial frequency and face processing in children with autism and Asperger syndrome.

Two experiments were designed to investigate possible abnormal face processing strategies in children with autistic spectrum disorders. A group of 11 children with autism was compared to two groups of normally developing children matched on verbal mental age and on chronological age. In the first experiment, participants had to recognize faces on the basis of identity, emotion, gaze direction, gender, and lip reading. All aspects of face processing, except for identity matching, were deficient in the autistic population compared with controls. In the second study, children had to match faces o

Dissociation between two modes of spatial processing by a visual form agnosic.

We report a dissociation between two aspects of visuospatial processing in a patient with a profound impairment in the visual perception of objects ('visual form agnosia'). The orientation-in-depth of a visual field ('visual pitch') was found to systematically influence the elevation at which she perceived her own eye level, just as it does in normal individuals; but at the same time, she was unable to discriminate perceptually the orientation-in-depth of the same visual field, a trivial task for individuals with normal vision. These results suggest that, in the normal brain, the processes tha

A bayesian analysis for spatial processes with application to disease mapping.

In epidemiology, maps of disease rates and disease risk provide a spatial perspective for researching disease aetiology. For rare diseases or when the population base is small, the rate and risk estimates may be unstable. We propose using a Bayesian analysis based on the conditional autoregressive (CAR) process that will spatially smooth disease rates or risk estimates by allowing each site to 'borrow strength' from its neighbours. Covariates may be included in the model in such a way as to establish a possible association between risk factors and disease incidence. Bayesian inferences are imp

Marginally Interpretable Spatial Logistic Regression With Bridge Processes.

In including random effects to account for dependent observations, the odds ratio interpretation of logistic regression coefficients is changed from population-averaged to subject-specific. This is unappealing in many applications, motivating a rich literature on methods that maintain the marginal logistic regression structure without random effects, such as generalized estimating equations. However, for spatial data, random effect approaches are appealing in providing a full probabilistic characterization of the data that can be used for prediction. We propose a new class of spatial logistic

Spatial extension of parafoveal processing predicts reading speed gain during reading acceleration.

Fast and efficient reading involves not only processing the currently fixated word but also simultaneous processing of the upcoming text. Although the role of extrafoveal processing in natural reading has been extensively documented, its contribution to reading acceleration benefits has remained unexplored. In the present study, we sought to investigate whether reading acceleration might act by influencing the efficiency and spatial extent of parafoveal processing. Participants read at either a natural or an accelerated pace while the availability of parafoveal information was independently ma
