Bayesian penalized spline models for the analysis of spatio-temporal count data.

In recent years, the availability of infectious disease counts in time and space has increased, and consequently, there has been renewed interest in model formulation for such data. In this paper, we describe a model that was motivated by the need to analyze hand, foot, and mouth disease surveillance data in China. The data are aggregated by geographical areas and by week, with the aims of the analysis being to gain insight into the space-time dynamics and to make short-term predictions, which will aid in the implementation of public health campaigns in those areas with a large predicted disea

A spatio-temporal analysis of dengue spread in a Brazilian dry climate region.

We investigated the relation between the spread, time scale, and spatial arrangement of dengue in Bahia, a Brazilian dry climate region, for the period 2000 to 2009. The degree of cross-correlation is calculated for 15 economic regions. We propose a multiscale statistical analysis to datasets of dengue cases in order to verify the effect of infection dispersal on the economic regions from the metropolitan region of Salvador. Our empirical results support a significant and persistent cross-correlation between most regions, reinforcing the idea that economic regions or climatic conditions are no

Global genomic profiling of Klebsiella pneumoniae: A spatio-temporal population structure analysis.

Klebsiella pneumoniae is an important clinical bacterial pathogen that has hypervirulent and multidrug-resistant variants. Uniform Manifold Approximation and Projection (UMAP) was used to cluster genomes of 16 797 K. pneumoniae strains collected, based on core genome distance, in over 100 countries during the period 1937 to 2021. A total of 60 high-density genetic clusters of strains representing the major epidemic strains were identified among these strains. Using UMAP bedding, the relationship between genetic cluster, capsular polysaccharide (KL) types and sequence type (ST) of the strains w

Spatio-temporal Genetic Structuring of Leishmania major in Tunisia by Microsatellite Analysis.

In Tunisia, cases of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania major are increasing and spreading from the south-west to new areas in the center. To improve the current knowledge on L. major evolution and population dynamics, we performed multi-locus microsatellite typing of human isolates from Tunisian governorates where the disease is endemic (Gafsa, Kairouan and Sidi Bouzid governorates) and collected during two periods: 1991-1992 and 2008-2012. Analysis (F-statistics and Bayesian model-based approach) of the genotyping results of isolates collected in Sidi Bouzid in 1991-1992 a

Spatial and spatio-temporal analysis for malaria hotspot identification: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Malaria hotspots have been the focus of public health managers during the last two decades because of the potential elimination gains that can be obtained by targeting them. Advances in spatial technologies in the 20th century such as geographic information systems, remotely sensed satellite data on climate and ecology, and statistical methods for spatial cluster detection have enhanced our ability to map fine-scale patterns of malaria transmission. This led to the diversification of analytical approaches and a lack of consensus on methods and standardised indicators for malaria

Mapping malaria in Thailand: A Bayesian spatio-temporal analysis of national surveillance data.

OBJECTIVES: Malaria, caused by protozoan parasites of the genus Plasmodium, remains prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions. This study employed Bayesian spatio-temporal analysis to assess malaria incidence patterns and identify environmental and climatic correlates across Thailand at the district level. METHODS: We analysed national malaria surveillance data using Bayesian hierarchical models to examine spatio-temporal patterns in malaria incidence. The model incorporated random effects to account for unobserved heterogeneity across locations and over time, enabling robust inferences o

GameSense: hierarchical spatio-temporal transformer for basketball player tracking and tactical performance analysis.

The analysis of basketball gameplay through multi-object tracking and action recognition is pivotal for enhancing player performance, tactical planning, and audience engagement. However, existing methods often suffer from limitations, including reliance on bounding box annotations, insufficient handling of occlusions, and a lack of holistic scene understanding. These limitations hinder the scalability and robustness of traditional approaches, particularly in dynamic and complex sports environments. To address these challenges, we propose a comprehensive framework combining the Basketball Playe

Spatio-Temporal Fractal Dimension Analysis from Resting State EEG Signals in Parkinson's Disease.

Complexity analysis of electroencephalogram (EEG) signals has emerged as a valuable tool for characterizing Parkinson's disease (PD). Fractal dimension (FD) is a widely employed method for measuring the complexity of shapes with many applications in neurodegenerative disorders. Nevertheless, very little is known on the fractal characteristics of EEG in PD measured by FD. In this study we performed a spatio-temporal analysis of EEG in PD using FD in four dimensions (4DFD). We analyzed 42 resting-state EEG recordings comprising two groups: 27 PD patients without dementia and 15 healthy control s

Spatio-temporal analysis of electric brain activity during semantic and phonological word processing.

There is an ongoing debate in cognitive neuroscience about the time course and the functional independence of the different processes involved in encoding written language material. New data indicate very fast and highly parallel language analysis networks in the brain. Here we demonstrate a methodological approach to study the temporal dynamics of this network by searching for time periods where different task demands emphasize different aspects of the network. Multi-channel event related potentials (ERPs) were recorded during a semantic and a phonological reading task from 14 healthy subject

Genetic Spatio-Temporal Analysis of Hepatitis D Virus Infection in Western Brazilian Amazon.

The Brazilian Amazon region is a highly endemic area for hepatitis Delta and has areas that are difficult to access. Understanding the dynamics of HDV transmission in these remote locations is important for elucidating the routes of infection. To investigate this, a molecular analysis of HDV was conducted to assess the spatio-temporal dynamics of HDV cases. Between 2010 and 2023, 35 patients were recruited from the Viral Hepatitis Outpatient Clinic in Rondônia, Brazil. Conventional PCR was used to amplify the complete HDV genome followed by nucleotide sequencing via the Sanger method. The HDV

Spatio-temporal analysis of smear-positive tuberculosis in the Sidama Zone, southern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) is a disease of public health concern, with a varying distribution across settings depending on socio-economic status, HIV burden, availability and performance of the health system. Ethiopia is a country with a high burden of TB, with regional variations in TB case notification rates (CNRs). However, TB program reports are often compiled and reported at higher administrative units that do not show the burden at lower units, so there is limited information about the spatial distribution of the disease. We therefore aim to assess the spatial distribution and presenc

Spatio-temporal analysis of anthrax in livestock at zonal level in Ethiopia, 2008-2020.

Ethiopia has not only one of the largest livestock populations in Africa, but also a substantial growing human population, increasing the risk of zoonotic disease transmission. Anthrax is a priority zoonosis in Ethiopia due to its risks to both human and animal health. Utilising 13 years of retrospective data (2008-2020) from 92 zones, this study investigated the spatio-temporal distribution of livestock anthrax cases in Ethiopia. High variability in annual incidence was observed, with the lowest number of cases (n=2357, 3.73 %) in 2018 followed by the highest number of cases (n=8210, 12.98 %)

A spatio-temporal analysis of marine diatom communities associated with pristine and aged plastics.

Complex microbial communities colonize plastic substrates over time, strongly influencing their fate and potential impacts on marine ecosystems. Among the first colonizers, diatoms play an important role in the development of this 'plastiphere'. We investigated 936 biofouling samples and the factors influencing diatom communities associated with plastic colonization. These factors included geographic location (up to 800 km apart), duration of substrate submersion (1 to 52 weeks), plastics (5 polymer types) and impact of artificial ageing with UV light. Diatom communities colonizing plastic deb
