Antibiotic prescription and dental practice within Saudi Arabia; the need to reinforce guidelines and implement specialty needs.

The aim of the present survey was to analyse the frequency and type of antibiotic prescriptions used in dental practice in Saudi Arabia, to assess the awareness of periodontal treatment need among dentists and specialists and to evaluate the distribution of dental specialties in Saudi Arabia. We distributed a questionnaire to 378 dentists including different specialists working in various major hospitals and dental departments. This same questionnaire was then redistributed, 3 years later, to 211 participants. Results from both surveys indicated that antibiotics were not always prescribed on a

Temporal consistency of large language model responses to restorative dentistry questions from the Turkish dental specialty examination.

The aim of this study is to compare the accuracy levels of different LLMs on multiple-choice questions (MCQs) related to the field of restorative dentistry in the dental specialisation exam (DUS) administered in Turkey and to evaluate response consistency (test-retest reliability) between two sessions. In this study, 127 text-based MCQs related to restorative dentistry, without visual material, were used in the DUS. The responses from the ChatGPT-5.1, Gemini 2.5 Pro, Microsoft Copilot, and DeepSeek-v3.2 models were evaluated at two different time points (T1 and T2) and coded as correct/incorre

Rising competition in postgraduate dental training in Türkiye: implications for healthcare workforce planning (2015-2025).

INTRODUCTION: Access to postgraduate dental specialty training is shaped by national selection and placement systems as well as training capacity, and constitutes an important component of healthcare workforce planning. In Türkiye, despite the recent increase in the number of dental graduates, the relatively limited expansion of specialty training positions has raised concerns about growing competition for access to dental specialty programs. This study aimed to examine long-term trends in competition for dental specialty training based on Dental Specialty Examination (DUS) data, from a health

General Dentistry on Life Support: The Overspecialization of the Profession.

ISSUE: General dentists are trained to identify and treat the most common oral conditions and their complications, including dental caries lesions, by restoring tooth structure and function and replacing missing teeth, as well as by treating gingival diseases. However, many senior undergraduate students and junior dentists believe they lack confidence to practice comprehensive clinical dentistry; they may avoid surgical endodontic procedures, orthodontic care, and implant-related cases, for example. The answer, they believe, lies in the imminent need to pursue a specialization to have a succes

Management of patients with reduced oral aperture and mandibular hypomobility (trismus) and implications for operative dentistry.

Reduced oral aperture and mandibular mobility/trismus are relatively common conditions that can be encountered in patients attending general dental practice, community dental practice and district general or dental teaching hospitals. All dental specialties may see patients with these conditions, and regardless of which environment or specialty, both patient and clinician may experience significant problems. The purpose of this opinion-based paper is to identify and review the causes of such conditions, to review the development of problems encountered for patients and clinicians, and to ident

Special care dentistry: overcoming future challenges.

Introduction Before 2008, special care dentistry did not officially exist until it was formalised as one of the 13 dental specialities, but there were services that provided care for patients with additional needs across various settings, such as the Community Dental Services and other specialities. This led to variability and fragmentation in service provision. The patient groups that fall into the remit of the speciality are diverse and complex and often require treatment in adapted environments with additional equipment or treatment modalities. The NHS has laid out Commissioning Standards in

Interobserver variability in radiographic interpretation of pediatric dental diseases: a pilot study.

Interobserver variability in radiographic interpretation of dental disease may be a result of clinical bias, education, training, experience or other factors, and may potentially lead to misdiagnosis of disease. Few studies have investigated variability related to dental specialty. The purpose of this pilot study was to determine interob-server variability in radiographic interpretation of pediatric dental diseases using a small number of observers, consisting of a pedodontist, an orthodontist and an oral radiologist. These specialists interpreted initial radiographic surveys of 200 pediatric

An Evaluation of Apical Cracks in Teeth Undergoing Orthograde Root Canal Instrumentation.

INTRODUCTION: Dentinal damage and cracks induced by orthograde preparation methods have been reported in studies using extracted teeth. The purpose of this in situ investigation was to evaluate dentinal cracks in nonextracted teeth after final instrumentation. The null hypothesis is that orthograde root canal instrumentation will have no effect on crack initiation in teeth retained in the natural periodontium. METHODS: Mandibular first and second premolars of pig jaws were selected. Forty single-rooted canals were divided into 5 groups (n = 8): (1) WaveOne (Dentsply Tulsa Dental Specialties,
