Executive function in children with signs of specific learning disorders.

This study aimed to compare the executive functions (EFs) of children with decoding, reading comprehension, spelling, and calculation deficits to those of typically developing (TD) children, to delineate specific EF profiles for each group. From an initial sample of 932 children, aged 7-13 years, 93 children with deficits in learning tasks that resemble those of Specific Learning Disorders (signs of Specific Learning Disorders, sSLD) and 28 TD children were studied. EFs were assessed through both performance-based tests and questionnaires completed by parents and teachers, on which ANOVAs, cor

Anxiety and Attentional Bias in Children with Specific Learning Disorders.

Children with specific learning disorders (SLDs) face a unique set of socio-emotional challenges as a result of their academic difficulties. Although a higher prevalence of anxiety in children with SLD is often reported, there is currently no research on cognitive mechanisms underlying this anxiety. One way to elucidate these mechanisms is to investigate attentional bias to threatening stimuli using a dot-probe paradigm. Our study compared children ages 9-16 with SLD (n = 48) to typically-developing (TD) controls (n = 33) on their attentional biases to stimuli related to general threats, readi

Care course in children with Specific Language and Learning Disorders.

Specific language and learning disorders concern about 5 %l of the population and explain a significant proportion of educational difficulties and schoolfailure in France. If they are not recognized in time, they can lead to school exclusion if not illiteracy. Reference Centers for specific language and learning disorders were created in the 2000's and improved consis- tently diagnosis and management of such disorders but there remain many difficulties: appointment's delay in these centers, professional training, limited care access in some areas and financial support for specific checkups and

Sensitivity and specificity of QEEG in children with attention deficit or specific developmental learning disorders.

The sensitivity and specificity of QEEG-based discriminant functions were evaluated in populations of children diagnosed with specific developmental learning disorders and those with attention deficit disorders. Both populations of children could be distinguished from each other, and from the normal population, with high levels of accuracy. Pretreatment QEEG could be utilized to distinguish ADD/ADHD children who responded to dextroamphetamine from those who responded to methylphenidate, again with high levels of accuracy. This paper provides a replication of all presented discriminant function

Daily motor characteristics in children with developmental coordination disorder and in children with specific learning disorder.

An association between learning disorders and coordination problems has been reported in several studies over the last few decades. In this study, we have investigated daily motor characteristics in children with a diagnosis of specific learning disorder (SLD) and compared them with those of children with developmental coordination disorder (DCD) and those of typically developing controls. Ninety-six children aged 5 to 12 years were included: 29 with a diagnosis of SLD, 33 of DCD, and 34 controls. The Italian version of the Developmental Coordination Disorder Questionnaire 2007 (DCDQ-Italian)

Serum Cingulin and Interleukin-6 Levels in Children With Specific Learning Disorder.

BACKGROUND: This study examined cingulin and interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels in children with specific learning disorder (SLD) to explore their association with inflammation and tight junction-related barrier biological processes in the context of the disorder. METHODS: The research compared 40 children with SLD and 41 healthy peers using a cross-sectional, case-controlled design. Serum cingulin and IL-6 levels were measured using the ELISA method. The Mathematics, Reading and Writing Assessment Scale (MOYA) teacher and parent forms were applied to evaluate disease severity in the SLD group. RES

Correlation between sleep profile and behavior in individuals with specific learning disorder.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to correlate sleep profile and behavior in individuals with Specific Learning Disorder (SLD). METHODS: The Sleep General Habits Questionnaire, Sleep Diary, and Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children (SDSC) were used in analysis of sleep, whereas the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) inventory was used in analysis of behavior. RESULTS: 65.5% of the individuals with SLD presented symptoms of sleep disorders, most frequently wakefulness-sleep transition and sleep disturbance total score, which showed values higher than acceptable. In addition, individuals with SLD presente

Forward and backward digit span difficulties in children with specific learning disorder.

This study examined performance in the forward and backward digit span task of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Fourth Edition (WISC-IV) in a large group of children with specific learning disorder (SLD) as compared with a group of typically developing children matched for age and sex. Our results further support the hypothesis that the intellectual difficulties of children with SLD involve working memory in the forward digit span task to a greater extent than in the backward digit span task. The correlation of the two spans with a General Ability Index (GAI) was similar in SLD, an

Diagnosing specific learning disorder in adults Part I: conceptual and methodological challenges.

INTRODUCTION: Specific learning disorders (SLDs) are widely conceptualized as lifelong neurodevelopmental conditions; however, the validity of first-time diagnosis in adulthood, particularly in postsecondary and professional settings, remains poorly defined. Despite more than six decades of research, the field lacks a stable definition and empirically validated diagnostic criteria capable of reliably distinguishing SLD from normative academic variability or contextual disadvantage. METHODS: Part I of this paper presents a critical narrative review of the historical development of the SLD cons

Cognitive differences between adults with traumatic brain injury and specific learning disorder.

Background: Impaired working memory, attention, and processing speed are common in individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI) and specific learning disorder (SLD). Yet, there is a paucity of research that has examined cognitive differences between these groups. Objective: The current study examined potential group differences between individuals with TBI and SLD on performance-based tests of working memory, attention, and processing speed. Subsequently, the study examined whether just processing speed tests could discriminate persons with TBI versus SLD.Method: The authors analyzed archival

Perception of Families of Children with Specific Learning Disorder: An Exploratory Study.

BACKGROUND: Parents have a tremendous influence on their children's academic and social success. Unfortunately, a majority of them do not have a concrete idea on how to assist their children, impacting negatively on both the parents and the child. Currently, there is sparse research on parents' experiences in dealing with children with specific learning disorders (SLD). The current study was planned to explore the perception of families of children with SLD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Five focus group discussions (FGDs) including 30 parents of children with SLD aged between 8 and 14 years were ca

Sleep Disturbances in Children with Attentional Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Specific Learning Disorders.

Sleep disturbances may be a significant source of distress for children with neurodevelopmental disorders, and consequently also for their families. Crucially, sleep disturbances might be influenced by comorbidity. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and specific learning disorder (SLD) often co-occur, and consequently, investigating sleep disturbances in children with comorbidity of ADHD and SLD is essential. Our study aimed at detecting sleep difficulties in a group of 74 children with ADHD, 78 children with SLD, and 76 children with ADHD and SLD by using the Sleep Disturbances S

[Reliability of brain stem audiometry in specific learning disorders (disorders of sensory integration)].

Diagnostic audiological tests performed in ten children from 1985 to 1991 showed remarkable differences between the results of behavioral audiometry (free field or pure tone audiometry) and those of auditory evoked response audiometry. Auditory brainstem response (ABR) was absent in seven children with sensory neural hearing loss. Neuropsychological evaluation was performed on four children, neuropsychological observation was performed on two children, pediatric examination was performed on three children and one child showed signs of neuropediatric disorder. The results of neuropsychological

Domain-Specific Cognitive Vulnerabilities in ADHD: The Impact of Comorbid Specific Learning Disorder on WISC-IV Profiles.

AIM: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is associated with heterogeneous cognitive profiles, yet the extent to which comorbid Specific Learning Disorder (SLD) contributes to domain-specific cognitive variability remains unclear. This study aimed to examine Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Fourth Edition (WISC-IV) index-level cognitive profiles in children with ADHD and to evaluate the independent impact of comorbid SLD using regression-based and discriminative analyses.
