Background: The hyperventilation test is used in clinical practice for diagnosis and therapeutic purposes; however, in the absence of a standardized protocol, the procedure varies significantly, predisposing tested subjects to risks such as cerebral hypoxia and ischemia. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), a noninvasive technique performed for cerebral oximetry monitoring, was used in the present study to identify the minimum decrease in the end-tidal CO2 (ETCO2) during hyperventilation necessary to induce changes on NIRS. Materials and Methods: We recruited 46 volunteers with no preexisting me

Perioperative applications of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) to monitor regional tissue oxygenation and perfusion in cardiac and noncardiac surgery are of increasing interest in neonatal care. Complex neonatal surgery can impair adequate oxygen delivery and tissue oxygen consumption and increase the risk of neurodevelopmental delay. Coupled with conventional techniques, NIRS monitoring may enable targeted hemodynamic management of the circulation in both cardiac and noncardiac surgical procedures. In this narrative review, we discuss the application of perioperative NIRS in specific neonata

This study uses representational similarity-based neural decoding to test whether semantic information elicited by words and pictures is encoded in functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) data. In experiment 1, subjects passively viewed eight audiovisual word and picture stimuli for 15 min. Blood oxygen levels were measured using the Hitachi ETG-4000 fNIRS system with a posterior array over the occipital lobe and a left lateral array over the temporal lobe. Each participant's response patterns were abstracted to representational similarity space and compared to the group average (excludi

OBJECTIVES: in vitro assessment of the reproducibility and the optimal separation and position of the optodes in continuous wave (CW-) NIRS measurement of local inhomogeneities in absorption and/or scattering.
METHODS: a CW- NIRS system (OXYMON) was used with laser diodes at wavelengths of 767 nm, 845 nm, 905 nm, 945 nm and 975 nm. For practical considerations (dimensions of neonatal head) the measurements were performed on a cylindrical tissue-equivalent phantom (70 mm diameter of base material with mua = 0.01 mm(-1) (800 nm) and mu's = 1.00 mm(-1) (800 nm)), containing rods with 10 x absorp

INTRODUCTION: Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) is widely used to monitor cerebral hemodynamics, however, it is limited by shallow penetration depth and susceptibility to hemodynamic noise from the scalp. A novel intracranial fNIRS (ifNIRS) system, featuring depth optrodes (optode-electrodes) and optical anchor bolts (OABs), has been proposed to address these limitations. This study investigates the feasibility of ifNIRS in a swine model under controlled interventions.
METHODS: Three animals were implanted with ifNIRS. Each animal with three OABs, with depth optrodes (DO) inserted

BACKGROUND: Acute kidney injury (AKI) affects approximately 30% of infants admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), and increases mortality risk by 50%. Current diagnostic criteria (serum creatinine rise with oliguria) cannot detect early-onset AKI, as up to 50% of nephron damage may occur by the time these abnormalities present. Once AKI is established, clinical management is often ineffective; therefore, prevention is key. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) offers a feasible, noninvasive approach to continuously monitor renal oxygenation trends over time, serving as a surrogate ma

Term and preterm infants often present with adverse conditions after birth resulting in abnormal vital functions and severe organ failure, which are associated or sometimes caused by low oxygen and/or blood supply. Brain injury may lead to substantial mortality and morbidity often affecting long-term outcome. Standard monitoring techniques in the NICU focus on arterial oxygen supply and hemodynamics and include respiratory rate, heart rate, blood pressure and arterial oxygen saturation as measured by pulse oximetry but provide only limited information on end organ oxygen delivery. Near-Infrare

OBJECTIVE: To examine the presence and localization of lipid-core plaque (LCP) in coronary vessels with chronic total occlusions (CTOs) using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS).
METHODS: NIRS imaging was performed after guidewire crossing of the occlusion in 15 patients with CTOs. LCP was defined as ≥2 adjacent 2 mm yellow blocks on the block chemogram. We also measured the maximum lipid-core burden index (LCBI) in a 4 mm length of artery (maxLCBI4mm). Large LCP was defined as maxLCBI4mm ≥500.
RESULTS: Median patient age was 64 years (interquartile range [IQR], 61-67 years) and all patients w

The management of golf course is different from other turfs. Its particularity lies in its higher and more precise requirement during maintenance compare with other turfs. In case something happened to turf of golf course, more effective and higher speed detecting and resolution are required. Only the data about turf growth and environment were mastered precisely in time, the friendly environmental and scientific management goal could be completed effectively and economically. The near infrared spectroscopy is a new kind of effective, convenient and non-destructive analytical method in the tur

As pharmaceutical manufacturing shifts towards continuous processing and increasingly potent, low-dose Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) products, there is a growing need for more accurate and reliable Process Analytical Technology (PAT). This study presents a direct, side-by-side comparison of Near-Infrared (NIR) spectroscopy and Near-Infrared Spatially Resolved Spectroscopy (NIR-SRS) for API concentration monitoring within a Continuous Direct Compression (CDC) process, using a Feed Frame Simulator (FFSIM). Both probes simultaneously measured moving powder under dynamic conditions to ass

Cerebral autoregulation (CA) is the mechanism that allows the brain to maintain a stable blood flow despite changes in blood pressure. Dynamic CA can be quantified based on continuous measurements of systemic mean arterial pressure (MAP) and global cerebral blood flow. Here, we show that dynamic CA can be quantified also from local measurements that are sensitive to the microvasculature. We used near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) to measure temporal changes in oxy- and deoxy-hemoglobin concentrations in the prefrontal cortex of 11 human subjects. A novel hemodynamic model translates those chang

Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a non-invasive modality for evaluating neurovascular coupling in the cerebellum during motor tasks with good temporal resolution. However, previous attempts to measure cerebellar activity with NIRS were limited and did not utilize validated tasks for bedside clinical testing. We employed 2 clinical tasks intended to closely engage the cerebellar and corticospinal systems within an environment which eliminated confounding visual and sound stimuli. Task 1 is a well-recognized bedside maneuver to assess a fundamental cerebellar function, and correspondingly, T

We summarize the available in vivo validation of cerebral near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) oximetry to inform future in vivo validation strategies. In particular, to establish a way forward in the assessment of NIRS instrumentation for future randomized trials, a systematic literature search is performed. The records are screened and abstracts are assessed to select studies fulfilling our inclusion criteria. Twenty-two pediatric and 28 adult studies are analyzed after exclusion of three articles in each group. All studies compare regional cerebral tissue oxygenation measured by cerebral NIRS

Walking is a complex motor behavior with a special relevance in clinical neurology. Many neurological diseases, such as Parkinson's disease and stroke, are characterized by gait disorders whose neurofunctional correlates are poorly investigated. Indeed, the analysis of real walking with the standard neuroimaging techniques poses strong challenges, and only a few studies on motor imagery or walking observation have been performed so far. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is becoming an important research tool to assess functional activity in neurological populations or for special t

Neurological morbidities such as peri/intraventricular hemorrhage and periventricular leukomalacia largely determine the neurodevelopmental outcome of vulnerable preterm infants and our aim should be to minimize their occurrence or severity. Bed-side neuromonitoring could provide valuable pieces of information about possible hemodynamic disturbances that are significantly associated with neurological morbidities and increased mortality. Near-infrared spectroscopy offers evaluation of regional cerebral oxygenation, which in conjunction with other non-invasive methods may give us a more complete
