Speech timing in apraxia of speech versus conduction aphasia.

This study examined temporal parameters of speech in subjects with apraxia of speech, conduction aphasia, and normal speech. They were asked to repeat target words in a carrier phrase 10 times. Acoustic analyses involved measurement of stop gap duration, voice onset time, vowel nucleus duration, and consonant-vowel (CV) duration. Speakers with apraxia of speech had longer and more variable stop gap, vowel, and CV durations than did subjects with aphasia or normal speech. Speakers with conduction aphasia had longer vowel durations and CV durations than subjects with normal speech. Also, subject

Speech Inconsistency in Children With Childhood Apraxia of Speech, Language Impairment, and Speech Delay: Depends on the Stimuli.

PURPOSE: The current research sought to determine (a) if speech inconsistency is a core feature of childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) or if it is driven by comorbid language impairment that affects a large subset of children with CAS and (b) if speech inconsistency is a sensitive and specific diagnostic marker that can differentiate between CAS and speech delay. METHOD: Participants included 48 children ranging between 4;7 to 17;8 (years;months) with CAS (n = 10), CAS + language impairment (n = 10), speech delay (n = 10), language impairment (n = 9), or typical development (n = 9). Treating apraxia of speech with an implicit protocol that activates speech motor areas via inner speech.

BACKGROUND: Treatments of apraxia of speech (AOS) have traditionally relied on overt practice. One alternative to this method is implicit phoneme manipulation which was derived from early models on inner speech. Implicit phoneme manipulation requires the participant to covertly move and combine phonemes to form a new word. This process engages a system of self-monitoring which is referred to as fully conscious inner speech. AIMS: The present study aims to advance the understanding and validity of a new treatment for AOS, implicit phoneme manipulation. Tasks were designed to answer the followi

Self-supervised speech quality assessment (S3QA): Leveraging speech foundation models for a scalable speech quality metric.

Methods for automatically assessing speech quality in real world environments are critical for robust human language technologies and assistive devices. Behavioral ratings (e.g., mean opinion scores) are considered the gold standard, but are susceptible to inter-rater variability, cannot be generalized, and are labor-intensive, thus limiting the acoustic challenges they can quantify. We present a scalable method for assessing speech quality: the self-supervised speech quality assessment model. First, we manipulated high-quality utterances, using acoustic challenges that emulate real-world degr

Automatic Speech Recognition in Primary Progressive Apraxia of Speech.

INTRODUCTION: Transcribing disordered speech can be useful when diagnosing motor speech disorders such as primary progressive apraxia of speech (PPAOS), who have sound additions, deletions, and substitutions, or distortions and/or slow, segmented speech. Since transcribing speech can be a laborious process and requires an experienced listener, using automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems for diagnosis and treatment monitoring is appealing. This study evaluated the efficacy of a readily available ASR system (wav2vec 2.0) in transcribing speech of PPAOS patients to determine if the word erro

Comparing Traditional Motor Speech Practice to Contextualized Speech Practice in Preschoolers With Childhood Apraxia of Speech.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to compare retention of real-word targets across practice conditions (contextualized vs. motor-only) within a modified integral stimulation treatment for preschoolers with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS). METHOD: A single-subject experimental design with alternating treatments was used with matched target sets randomly assigned to contextualized practice, motor-only practice, or no treatment. Three preschoolers with CAS completed 18 therapy sessions, each consisting of two 25-min blocks: one contextualized practice and one motor-only practice. Order of pra

Protocol for the Connected Speech Transcription of Children with Speech Disorders: An Example from Childhood Apraxia of Speech.

OBJECTIVE: While it is known that connected speech has different features to single-word speech, there are currently few recommendations regarding connected speech transcription. This research therefore aimed to develop a clinically feasible protocol for connected speech transcription. The protocol was then used to assist with description of the connected speech of children with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS), as little is known about their connected speech characteristics. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: Following a literature review, the Connected Speech Transcription Protocol (CoST-P) was ite

Speech motor control in fluent and dysfluent speech production of an individual with apraxia of speech and Broca's aphasia.

Apraxia of speech (AOS) is typically described as a motor-speech disorder with clinically well-defined symptoms, but without a clear understanding of the underlying problems in motor control. A number of studies have compared the speech of subjects with AOS to the fluent speech of controls, but only a few have included speech movement data and if so, this was primarily restricted to the study of single articulators. If AOS reflects a basic neuromotor dysfunction, this should somehow be evident in the production of both dysfluent and perceptually fluent speech. The current study compared motor

Audio-visual matching of speech and non-speech oral gestures in patients with aphasia and apraxia of speech.

BACKGROUND: Audio-visual speech perception mechanisms provide evidence for a supra-modal nature of phonological representations, and a link of these mechanisms to motor representations of speech has been postulated. This leads to the question if aphasic patients and patients with apraxia of speech are able to exploit the visual signal in speech perception and if implicit knowledge of audio-visual relationships is preserved in these patients. Moreover, it is unknown if the audio-visual processing of mouth movements has a specific organisation in the speech as compared to the non-speech domain.

Evaluation of an Automatic Speech Recognition Platform for Dysarthric Speech.

INTRODUCTION: The use of commercially available automatic speech recognition (ASR) software is challenged when dysarthria accompanies a physical disability. To overcome this issue, a mobile and personal speech assistant (mPASS) platform was developed, using a speaker-dependent ASR software. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of the proposed platform and to compare mPASS recognition accuracy to a commercial speaker-independent ASR software. In addition, secondary aims were to investigate the relationship between severity of dysarthria and accuracy and to explore p

Speech characteristics of childhood apraxia of speech: A survey research.

PURPOSE: There has not been any valid method for the clinical diagnosis of Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) up to now, and the golden standard for diagnosis is the expert's opinion. The current research was conducted to obtain criteria used by the Iranian Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) to establish speech characteristics and co-occurring problems of CAS based on their knowledge and clinical experience. METHODS: This research used a questionnaire-based survey design for data collection. The questionnaire was filled out by 260 anonymous participants, both physically and online. RESULTS:

The effect of phonetic context on speech movements in repetitive speech.

This study examined how, in repetitive speech, articulatory movements differ in degree of variability and movement range depending on articulatory constraints manipulated by phonetic context and type of CVC-CVC word pair. These pairs consisted of words that either differed in onset consonants but shared rhymes, or were identical. Articulatory constraints were manipulated by employing different combinations of vowels and consonants. The word pairs were produced in a repetitive speech task at a normal and fast speaking rate. Articulatory movements were measured with 3D electro-magnetic articulog
