This study addresses the assessment of developmental apraxia of speech (DAS) in children. For this, 11 children with a clear diagnosis of DAS were selected, based on documented speech history and perceptual evaluation of speech. The children with DAS, as well as 11 normal-speaking children, produced singleton real word and nonsense word imitations elicited in a standardised way. Phonetic transcriptions were analysed and errors in consonants classified. The results showed, firstly, that the children with DAS produced similar types of consonant errors as has been reported in the literature, whic

BACKGROUND: Articulation disorder decreases the clarity of language and causes a decrease in children's learning and social ability. The demand for non-face-to-face treatment is increasing owing to the limited number of therapists and geographical or economic constraints. Non-face-to-face speech therapy programs using serious games have been proposed as an alternative.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to investigate the efficacy of home therapy on logopedic and phoniatric abilities in children with articulation disorder using the Smart Speech game interface.
METHODS: This study is a prosp

Recently, the development of medical rehabilitation technology has resulted in an increased interest in speech therapy equipment. In particular, research on articulation therapy for communication disorders is being actively conducted. The existing methods for the diagnosis and treatment of speech disorders, such as traditional tactile perception tests and methods based on the empirical judgment of speech therapists, have many limitations. Moreover, the position and contact force of the tongue are key factors in speech disorders with regards to articulation. This is a very important factor in t

This study had the aim to analyze both the phonological changes and the generalization obtained in the treatment with rothics in two models of phonological treatment. The sample consisted of four subjects diagnosed with phonological disorder, with ages between four and six years. All of them were assessed before and after the phonological therapy. Two groups were established for the treatment with rothics. One group was treated with ABAB - Withdrawal and Multiple Probes Model, and the other group with the Maximal Opposition Model. The phonological system and the occurrence of generalizations b

This study examined the effects of orofacial myofunctional therapy (OMT) on speech intelligibility in adults with persistent articulation impairments. Six adults in the age range of 18-23 years were selected to receive orofacial myofunctional therapy for a period of six weeks. The results showed that five out of six clients made significant progress in oral postures and speech sound production across all three speech production tasks: single words, sentences, and spontaneous speech. Speech intelligibility increased significantly in all clients except the one diagnosed with developmental apraxi

UNLABELLED: Speech disorder that continues into middle childhood is rarely studied compared with speech disorder in the early years. Speech production in single words, connected speech and nonword repetition was assessed for 7390 eight-year-old children within the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC). The majority (n=6399) had typical speech and 50 of these children served as controls. The remainder were categorised as using common clinical distortions only (CCD, n=582) or speech difficulties (SDiff, n=409). The samples from the CCD children were not analysed further. Speec

These cases reports describe the rationale and procedures for structuring an articulation therapy program on the basis of distinctive feature analysis of the child's articulation problems. Results of the speech therapy program described in these case reports illustrate the effectiveness and efficiency of using distinctive feature analysis to structure and guide articulation therapy. The report further points out that a therapist need not greatly alter the traditional approach to utilize distinctive feature analysis as an integral part of the overall articulation therapy program.

BACKGROUND: Single case studies are a valuable means of providing information about the outcomes of speech and language intervention. Many previous studies have used phonological analysis as a theoretical basis, while others have used psycholinguistic models. The present study combines these approaches to assessment, intervention and evaluation of outcomes.
AIMS: The aim of the research was to determine if intensive psycholinguistically based intervention could result in (a) specific and (b) generalized improvements in the speech production of a child with severe and persisting phonological d

This study aims to demonstrate that speech sound disorders associated with central auditory processing disorder stem from a processing disorder in the central auditory pathways during listening, rather than from an articulation-based disorder. Included 25 children with articulation problems (WAP; 7 females, 18 males) and 25 typically developing children without articulation problems (WoAP; 10 females, 15 males), aged 5-8 years. Assessments comprised the Hacettepe Articulation Test, Scan-C subtests (Filtered Words, Auditory Figure-Ground, Competing Words, Competing Sentences), and the Denver II

Locus equations (LEs) were derived from consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) syllables produced by four speakers with profound hearing loss. Group data indicated that LE functions obtained for the separate CVC productions initiated by /b/, /d/, and /g/ were less well-separated in acoustic space than those obtained from speakers with normal hearing. A general trend of reduced anticipatory coarticulation was obtained for contexts in which speakers with normal hearing ordinarily coarticulate. One speaker engaged more coarticulation than did speakers with normal hearing. Speakers' productions could be

Speech disorders are significant barriers to the balanced development of a child. Many children in Poland are affected by lisps (sigmatism)-the incorrect articulation of sibilants. Since speech therapy diagnostics is complex and multifaceted, developing computer-assisted methods is crucial. This paper presents the results of assessing the usefulness of hybrid feature vectors extracted based on multimodal (video and audio) data for the place of articulation assessment in sibilants /s/ and /ʂ/. We used acoustic features and, new in this field, visual parameters describing selected articulators'

Vowel misarticulations have received very little attention in our literature. The author suggests that although vowel errors occur less frequently than consonant errors, their presence may indicate increased severity of disorder and should not be ignored. As vowel misarticulations have received relatively scant attention, their assessment and remediation have not been addressed. Procedures for the analysis and interpretation of vowel errors are described. A case study is presented to illustrate approaches to vowel assessment and remediation. Clinician attention to this aspect of phonological d

Some children with mild cerebral palsy have articulation disorders that are resistant to conventional speech therapy techniques. This preliminary study investigated the use of electropalatography (EPG) to diagnose and treat a long-standing articulation disorder that had not responded to conventional speech therapy techniques in an 8-year-old boy (D) with a congenital left hemiplegia. The targets for EPG therapy were speech errors affecting velar targets /k, g, eta/, which were consistently fronted to alveolar placement [t, d, n]. After 15 sessions of EPG therapy over a 4-month period, D's abil

OBJECTIVE: The relationship between ankyloglossia and speech is controversial. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of tongue-tie release on speech articulation and intelligibility.
METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted. Pediatric patients (>2 years of age) being referred for speech concerns due to ankyloglossia were assessed by a pediatric otolaryngologist, and speech articulation was formally assessed by a speech language pathologist using the Goldman-Fristoe Test of Articulation 2 (GFTA-2). Patients then underwent a tongue-tie release procedure in clinic. Aft
