Music perception and its correlation with auditory speech perception in pediatric Mandarin-speaking cochlear implant users.

BACKGROUND: Cochlear implants (CI) help regain perception of sound for patients with sensorineural hearing loss. The ability to recognize music pitch may be crucial for recognizing and producing speech for Mandarin. AIMS/OBJECTIVES: This study aims to search for possible influencing factors of music perception and correlations between music perception and auditory speech abilities among prelingually deaf pediatric Mandarin-speaking CI users. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Music perception of 24 pediatric CI users and 12 normal hearing children was measured using the MuSIC test. Auditory speech percep

Multiple sclerosis lesions of the auditory pons are not silent.

To understand the relationship between brainstem lesions and auditory neurology in patients with multiple sclerosis, we compared behavioural, electrophysiological and imaging data in 38 patients with probable or definite multiple sclerosis and normal or near normal hearing. Behavioural measures included (i) general hearing tests (audiogram, speech discrimination) and (ii) hearing tests likely to be critically dependent upon brainstem processing (masking level difference, interaural time and level discrimination). Brainstem auditory evoked potentials provided the electrophysiological data. Mult

Pre and post-glycerol special audiometric tests battery results in endolymphatic hydrops.

The glycerol test for endolymphatic hydrops was administered to 17 patients exhibiting classical symptoms of Meniere's disease. A complete battery of audiometric tests including the SISI, TTD (Rosenberg variation). ABLB, Sweep Frequency Bekesy, two tests of speech discrimination (Rush Hughes and Northwestern), and air and bone conduction thresholds were administered pre and post-glycerol ingestion in order to determine the effect of osmotic diuresis. Improvement in pure-tone sensitivity and speech discrimination scores were most often observed. Among the special audiometric tests only the SISI

Integrating perceptual and instrumental procedures in the assessment of velopharyngeal insufficiency.

Although technology for the instrumental assessment of velopharyngeal function has advanced, management decisions still too often depend only on subjective perceptual analyses. Both perceptual and instrumental appraisal are necessary for adequate assessment. Instrumental assessment is essential prior to surgical or other long-term management. The assessment is only as valid as the instruments used. If such instruments are not readily available, clinicians should refer patients to centers where they are available and these examinations are routinely performed.

Auditory perceptual processing in people with reading and oral language impairments: current issues and recommendations.

A popular hypothesis holds that specific reading disability (SRD) and specific language impairment (SLI) result from an impaired ability to process rapid and brief sounds. However, the results of experiments that have tested this hypothesis are incongruous. A number of factors could explain these contradictory findings, including the questionable reliability and validity of rapid auditory processing tasks, individual differences in the auditory processing abilities of SRD and SLI populations, the age of listeners, the quality of control groups, and the relationship between verbal and non-verba

A Profiling System for the Assessment of Individual Needs for Rehabilitation With Hearing Aids.

This study focuses on the development of a profiling system to specify the needs of hearing-aid candidates. As a basis for the profile of compensation needs, we used a slightly modified version of the Amsterdam Inventory of Disability and Handicap, combined with the well-known Client-Oriented Scale of Improvement (COSI). The first questionnaire results in scores for six audiological dimensions: detection, speech in quiet, speech in noise, localization, focus or discrimination, and noise tolerance. The goal of this study was to determine whether the six dimensions derived from the disability qu

[Speech perception development in children with dyslexia].

Several studies have indicated that dyslexics show a deficit in speech perception (SP). The main purpose of this research is to determine the development of SP in dyslexics and normal readers paired by grades from 2nd to 6th grade of primary school and to know whether the phonetic contrasts that are relevant for SP change during development, taking into account the individual differences. The achievement of both groups was compared in the phonetic tasks: voicing contrast, place of articulation contrast and manner of articulation contrast. The results showed that the dyslexic performed poorer t

Impact of Elevation of Temporal Lobe During Middle Fossa Acoustic Neuroma Surgery on Contralateral Speech Discrimination.

AIM: For middle fossa acoustic neuroma approach, retractors are needed to elevate the temporal lobe to be able to access the internal auditory meatus. The temporal lobe hosts the primary and secondary auditory fields. The question arises regarding whether this elevation affects the functionality of the auditory cortex. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In patients, who underwent acoustic neuroma surgery, contralateral speech discrimination was tested pre- and postsurgery using different speech discrimination tests. Results of patients with a middle fossa approach were compared with patients with a transl

Rasch analysis of word identification and magnitude estimation scaling responses in measuring naive listeners' judgments of speech intelligibility of children with severe-to-profound hearing impairments.

PURPOSE: Speech intelligibility research typically relies on traditional evidence of reliability and validity. This investigation used Rasch analysis to enhance understanding of the functioning and meaning of scores obtained with 2 commonly used procedures: word identification (WI) and magnitude estimation scaling (MES). METHOD: Narrative samples of children with hearing impairments were used to collect data from listeners with no previous experience listening to or judging intelligibility of speech. WI data were analyzed with the Rasch rating scale model. MES data were examined with Rasch pa

Rate-dependent perception of aspiration and pre-aspiration in Icelandic.

Speech segments are highly context-dependent and acoustically variable. One factor that contributes heavily to the variability of speech is speaking rate. Some speech cues are temporal in nature-that is, the distinctions that they signify are defined over time. How can temporal speech cues keep their distinctiveness in the face of extrinsic transformations, such as those wrought by different speaking rates? This issue is explored with respect to the perception, in Icelandic, of Voice Onset Time as a cue for word-initial stop voicing, word-initial aspiration as a cue for [h], and Voice Offset T

Vestibular function in auditory neuropathy.

Auditory neuropathy is characterized by mild-to-moderate pure-tone hearing loss, poor speech discrimination out of proportion with this loss, absent or abnormal auditory brainstem responses and normal outer hair cell function as measured by otoacoustic emissions and cochlear microphonics. We followed three patients in our clinic whom we classified as auditory neuropathy patients. These patients also complained of balance disorders and we report our auditory and vestibular system analyses of these patients. The data presented herein include results of audiometric tests (serial pure-tone audiome

Evaluation of a protocol for fitting a wearable master hearing aid.

An experimental protocol for the prescriptive fitting of a wearable master hearing aid was evaluated. The protocol consisted of four stages: (i) acquisition of baseline audiometric data, (ii) fixed test battery using speech-in-noise as the test material, (iii) adaptive adjustments, and (iv) evaluative comparative data. The results showed that systematic improvements in hearing-aid performance were obtained as a result of using the experimental protocol and that the largest improvements were obtained during the fixed-test-battery stage. The protocol in its present form is not clinically practic

The specific relation between perception and production errors for place of articulation in developmental apraxia of speech.

Developmental apraxia of speech is a disorder of phonological and articulatory output processes. However, it has been suggested that perceptual deficits may contribute to the disorder. Identification and discrimination tasks offer a fine-grained assessment of central auditory and phonetic functions. Seventeen children with developmental apraxia (mean age 8:9, years:months) and 16 control children (mean age 8:0) were administered tests of identification and discrimination of resynthesized and synthesized monosyllabic words differing in place-of-articulation of the initial voiced stop consonants

The notion of 'phonology' in dyslexia research: cognitivism--and beyond.

Phonology has been a central concept in the scientific study of dyslexia over the past decades. Despite its central position, however, it is a concept with no precise definition or status. The present article investigates the notion of 'phonology' in the tradition of cognitive psychology. An attempt is made to characterize the basic assumptions of the phonological approach to dyslexia and to evaluate these assumptions on the basis of commonly accepted standards of empirical science. First, the core assumptions of phonological awareness are outlined and discussed. Second, the position of Paula

[Phoneme analysis and phoneme discrimination of juvenile speech therapy school students].

BACKGROUND: Phoneme analysis and phoneme discrimination, important factors in acquiring spoken and written language, have been evaluated in juvenile speech therapy school students. The results have been correlated with the results of a school achievement test. The following questions were of interest: Do students in the lower verbal skill segment show pathological phoneme analysis and phoneme discrimination skills? Do the results of the school achievement test differ from the results by students visiting German "Hauptschule"? How does phoneme analysis and phoneme discrimination performance cor

A case of verbal auditory agnosia: missing the word ... missing the sound...

The neuropsychological nature of verbal auditory agnosia is not fully understood. This study aims to describe the language deficits and the remediation strategies used in a person with verbal auditory agnosia. In addition, it will address the theoretical issues concerning the nature of the phenomenon and the clinical implications in the management of people with this disorder.

The effect of speechreading on the speech-reception threshold of sentences in noise.

The monaural speech-reception threshold of sentences in noise, here defined as the 50% correct-syllables threshold, was measured for a female speaker with and without speechreading via a video monitor. The additional visual information resulted in a 4.6-dB lower threshold for a group of 12 young subjects and in a 4.0-dB lower threshold for a group of 18 elderly subjects compared to auditory presentation alone.

Word position and stress effects in consonant cluster perception and production.

The aim of the present study was to investigate whether the saliency effect for word beginnings reported in children with dyslexia (Marshall & Van der Lely, 2009) can be found also in typically developing children. Thirty-four typically developing Italian children aged 8-10 years completed two specifically designed tasks: a production task and a perception task. Both tasks used nonwords containing clusters consisting of plosive plus liquid (e.g. pl). Clusters could be either in a stressed or in an unstressed syllable and could be either in initial position (first syllable) or in medial positio

A critique of Mody, Studdert-Kennedy, and Brady's "Speech perception deficits in poor readers: auditory processing or phonological coding?".

A 1997 article by Mody, Studdert-Kennedy, and Brady claimed that their studies constituted a critical test of two hypotheses concerning students with reading impairment: (a) that they experience speech-specific failure in phonological representation, and (b) they display general deficits in auditory temporal processing. From these studies, the authors concluded that their findings were consistent with the first hypothesis but were not in agreement with the second. A critical analysis of the Mody et al. article leads to the conclusion that it makes no contribution to that debate because (a) the
