Speech intelligibility after gingivectomy of excess palatal tissue.

To appreciate any enhancement in speech following gingivectomy of enlarged anterior palatal gingiva. Periodontal literature has documented various conditions, pathophysiology, and treatment modalities of gingival enlargement. Relationship between gingival maladies and speech alteration has received scant attention. This case report describes on altered speech pattern enhancement secondary to the gingivectomy procedure. A systemically healthy 24-year- female patient reported with bilateral anterior gingival enlargement who was provisionally diagnosed as "gingival abscess with inflammatory enlar

Auditory efferents involved in speech-in-noise intelligibility.

Following studies proposing that medial olivocochlear efferents might be involved in the processing of complex signals in noise, we tested the involvement of efferent feedback in speech-in-noise intelligibility. Two approaches were used: measures of speech-in-noise intelligibility in vestibular neurotomized patients with cut efferents and comparison with normal hearing subjects; and correlations between effectiveness of olivocochlear feedback, assessed by contralateral suppression of otoacoustic emissions and speech-in-noise intelligibility in normal subjects. Contralateral noise improved spee

Speech and motor speech disorders and intelligibility in adolescents with Down syndrome.

The goal of this research was to assess the support for motor speech disorders as explanatory constructs to guide research and treatment of reduced intelligibility in persons with Down syndrome (DS). Participants were the 45 adolescents with DS in the prior paper who were classified into five mutually-exclusive motor speech classifications using the Speech Disorders Classification System. An ordinal index classified participants' percentage of intelligible words in conversation as High (≥ 85%), Moderate (80% - 84.9%), or Low (< 80%). Statistical analyses tested for significant differences in i

Vowel Acoustics as Predictors of Speech Intelligibility in Dysarthria.

PURPOSE: This study sought to determine if alternative vowel space area (VSA) measures (i.e., novel trajectory-based measures: vowel space hull area and vowel space density) predicted speech intelligibility to the same extent as two traditional vowel measures (i.e., token-based measures: VSA and corner dispersion) in speakers with dysarthria. Additionally, this study examined if the strength of the relationship between acoustic vowel measures and intelligibility differed based on how intelligibility was measured (i.e., orthographic transcriptions [OTs] and visual analog scale [VAS] ratings).

Dysphonia Interference in Schoolteachers' Speech Intelligibility in the Classroom.

UNLABELLED: "Among the most common occupations, schooteachers are the ones who experience the most changes throughout their career. Considering this, the present study aims to verify whether dysphonia in three different degrees may compromise the speech intelligibility of schoolteachers in the classroom. METHOD: Overall, 39 students, average age 10 years, randomly selected from a public school in the Federal District, Brazil (Distrito Federal, Brasil) performed a transcription task of 20 sentences spoken by four distinct female voices in a classroom, one with a control voice (normal), another

Audiomotor Perceptual Training Enhances Speech Intelligibility in Background Noise.

Sensory and motor skills can be improved with training, but learning is often restricted to practice stimuli. As an exception, training on closed-loop (CL) sensorimotor interfaces, such as action video games and musical instruments, can impart a broad spectrum of perceptual benefits. Here we ask whether computerized CL auditory training can enhance speech understanding in levels of background noise that approximate a crowded restaurant. Elderly hearing-impaired subjects trained for 8 weeks on a CL game that, like a musical instrument, challenged them to monitor subtle deviations between predic

Speech intelligibility after repair of cleft lip and palate.

Background: Intelligibility refers to understandability of speech; and lack of it can negatively affect children's overall communication effectiveness. Children with repaired cleft lip and/or cleft palate (CL/P) may experience poor speech intelligibility. This study aimed at evaluating speech intelligibility in children with repaired CL/P who had not been referred to speech-language pathology clinics for early intervention. Methods: Sixty-four monolingual Persian-speaking children, 32 children with repaired CL/P, and 32 controls aged 3 to 5 years participated in this survey. Their speech intel

Speech Intelligibility of Cochlear-Implanted and Normal-Hearing Children.

INTRODUCTION: Speech intelligibility, the ability to be understood verbally by listeners, is the gold standard for assessing the effectiveness of cochlear implantation. Thus, the goal of this study was to compare the speech intelligibility between normal-hearing and cochlear-implanted children using the Persian intelligibility test. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-six cochlear-implanted children aged 48-95 months, who had been exposed to 95-100 speech therapy sessions, were compared with 40 normal-hearing children aged 48-84 months. The average post-implanted time was 14.53 months. Speech intel

Double hearing protection and speech intelligibility-room for improvement.

INTRODUCTION: Double hearing protection is used in many air forces around the world for protection in noisy aircraft environments, particularly in helicopters. The usual combination is foam ear plugs under headset or helmet muffs. Much of the research that spurred the introduction of foam earplugs indicated little change in speech intelligibility in persons with normal hearing. However, aircrew often complain about having to maximize intercom volume for speech understanding, causing a situation with no reserve volume and bad sound quality. In recent years, further developments have included so

Intelligibility of oesophageal and tracheo-oesophageal speech: preliminary observations.

The purpose of this study was to compare the intelligibility of two types of alaryngeal speech commonly used after total laryngectomy. Four male oesophageal speakers and four male tracheo-oesophageal speakers read a series of monosyllabic words, multisyllabic words and sentences. The monosyllabic word list consisted of several minimal pairs for each of eight phonetic contrasts; multisyllabic words and sentences were not selected on specific phonetic grounds. Audio recordings of all subjects' readings were presented to eight naïve adult listeners who completed both an item identification task a

A metric for predicting binaural speech intelligibility in stationary noise and competing speech maskers.

One criterion in the design of binaural sound scenes in audio production is the extent to which the intended speech message is correctly understood. Object-based audio broadcasting systems have permitted sound editors to gain more access to the metadata (e.g., intensity and location) of each sound source, providing better control over speech intelligibility. The current study describes and evaluates a binaural distortion-weighted glimpse proportion metric-BiDWGP-which is motivated by better-ear glimpsing and binaural masking level differences. BiDWGP predicts intelligibility from two alternati

[The Freiburg speech intelligibility test : A pillar of speech audiometry in German-speaking countries].

The Freiburg speech intelligibility test according to DIN 45621 was introduced around 60 years ago. For decades, and still today, the Freiburg test has been a standard whose relevance extends far beyond pure audiometry. It is used primarily to determine the speech perception threshold (based on two-digit numbers) and the ability to discriminate speech at suprathreshold presentation levels (based on monosyllabic nouns). Moreover, it is a measure of the degree of disability, the requirement for and success of technical hearing aids (auxiliaries directives), and the compensation for disability an

Voice Familiarization Training Improves Speech Intelligibility and Reduces Listening Effort.

Understanding speech among competing speech poses a substantial challenge. In these environments, familiar voices-including naturally familiar (e.g., friends, partners) and lab-trained voices-are more intelligible than unfamiliar voices. Yet, whether familiar voices also require less effort to understand is currently unknown. We trained 20 participants to become familiar with three voices, then tested listening effort during a speech intelligibility task. During familiarization and training, participants were exposed to three talkers for different lengths of time, either speaking 88, 166, or 4

Speech Impairment in Cerebellar Ataxia Affects Naturalness More Than Intelligibility.

The purpose of this analysis was to document intelligibility and naturalness in ataxia, a neurological condition that results from cerebellar damage. The cerebellum is important for normal speech production to scale and coordinate articulatory and laryngeal movements. The disruption of these cerebellar mechanisms has unique implications for how intelligibility and naturalness are affected in ataxia. The results of research on speech in ataxia have important clinical implications for assessment and treatment of individuals with ataxic dysarthria. Speech samples from 27 participants with ataxia

Digitised evaluation of speech intelligibility using vowels in maxillectomy patients.

Among the functional disabilities that patients face following maxillectomy, speech impairment is a major factor influencing quality of life. Proper rehabilitation of speech, which may include prosthodontic and surgical treatments and speech therapy, requires accurate evaluation of speech intelligibility (SI). A simple, less time-consuming yet accurate evaluation is desirable both for maxillectomy patients and the various clinicians providing maxillofacial treatment. This study sought to determine the utility of digital acoustic analysis of vowels for the prediction of SI in maxillectomy patie

Acceptability and intelligibility of tracheoesophageal speech using the Groningen valve.

This prospective study was set up to investigate the acceptability and intelligibility of speech produced by a population of male patients who had undergone total laryngectomy for malignant disease in Sheffield. Each had been fitted with at least 1 Groningen tracheoesophageal prosthesis and their phonatory qualities were assessed by a team of 8 naive listeners. Speech quality assessed in terms of acceptability and intelligibility was found to be generally very high and compares favourably with that produced by a population of patients using the Blom-Singer prosthesis.
