Stability of Speech Intelligibility Measures Over Repeated Sampling Times in Speakers With Acquired Apraxia of Speech.

Purpose The purpose of this investigation was to measure the test-retest stability of single-word intelligibility in a group of 28 speakers with chronic apraxia of speech and aphasia. Method The Assessment of Intelligibility of Dysarthric Speech was administered twice to each participant, with samples separated by 1 week. Scoring of recorded samples was completed independently by three expert listeners using transcription and multiple-choice scoring formats. Results Percent intelligible words was very similar for the group over the two sampling times for both scoring formats (i.e., within 1.5%

A Scoping Review of Assessment Protocols of Cleft Palate Speech: Implications for Developing Language-Specific Protocols.

ObjectiveThis scoping review has three aims: (1) to identify the most common and less frequently included features of existing cleft palate speech assessment protocols; (2) to examine the strengths and limitations of these protocols; and (3) to propose key considerations for developing language-specific cleft palate speech assessment protocols in regions where a standardized assessment protocol has not yet been established.DesignA comprehensive search was conducted for cleft palate speech assessment protocols using published textbooks and five electronic databases: PubMed, CINAHL Ultimate, Sco

Robustness of lateral tongue bracing under bite block perturbation.

Lateral tongue bracing is a lingual posture in which the sides of the tongue are held against the palate and upper molars, and has been observed cross-linguistically. However, it is unknown whether lateral bracing makes adjustments to external perturbation like other body postures. The present study aims to test the robustness of lateral tongue bracing with three experiments. The first baseline experiment was an analysis of an electropalatogram database and the results showed lateral bracing being continuously maintained. The second experiment applied an external perturbation during speech pro

Case study: use of sentence completion with a person with aphasia and apraxia of speech.

Several interventions for acquired apraxia of speech (AOS) involve models, imitation, or repetition to elicit production of words. Early researchers wrote about anecdotal experiences, in which sentence completion facilitated speech production for individuals with AOS. The use of sentence completion to elicit production of words during intervention has not been systematically researched. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the effectiveness of sentence completion to elicit correct productions of words, as part of an intervention for one individual with aphasia and AOS. Training occurre

Cluttering symptoms in school-age children by communicative context: A preliminary investigation.

Purpose: The objective of this study was to compare the symptoms of cluttering among school-age children who do and do not clutter in the contexts of monologue, conversation and expository discourse.Method: A matched pairs design was used to compare cluttering symptoms according to the Lowest Common Denominator (LCD) definition of cluttering, a definition representing the core speech and fluency characteristics of cluttering agreed upon among experts. Cluttering symptoms (over-coarticulated words, normal disfluencies, abnormal pauses) in eight school-aged males with cluttering were compared to

Stimulus Characteristics of Single-Word Tests of Children's Speech Sound Production.

PURPOSE: This clinical focus article provides readers with a description of the stimulus characteristics of 12 popular tests of speech sound production. METHOD: Using significance testing and descriptive analyses, stimulus items were compared in terms of the number of opportunities for production of all consonant singletons, clusters, and rhotic and nonrhotic vowels of Standard American English; phonetic/phonological and structural complexity; and the presence of bound morphemes. RESULTS: The tests varied widely in terms of the number of opportunities for production of consonant singletons,

Complexity of articulation planning in apraxia of speech: The limits of phoneme-based approaches.

This report presents evidence suggesting that the phoneme-based approach taken by Romani, Galuzzi, Guariglia, and Goslin (Comparing phoneme frequency, age of acquisition, and loss in aphasia: Implications for phonological universals. Cognitive Neuropsychology, this issue) falls short of capturing the complexity of articulation planning in patients with apraxia of speech. Empirical and modelling data are reported to demonstrate that the apraxic pathomechanism resides in the hierarchical architecture of phonological words rather than in the context-independent properties of phonemes. Because the

Self-Judgments of Word Production Accuracy in Acquired Apraxia of Speech.

PURPOSE: The ability to recognize one's own speech errors has long been considered a clinical feature of acquired apraxia of speech (AOS) despite limited empirical data supporting this notion. This study was designed to (a) investigate the ability of speakers with AOS to self-judge the accuracy of their own word productions and (b) examine the test-retest stability of a measure to quantify the self-judgments of speakers with AOS. METHOD: Twenty-four speakers with AOS and aphasia repeated mono- and multisyllabic words. After each word, they indicated whether their production was correct or inc

Praditor: A DBSCAN-based automation for speech onset detection.

Speech onset time (SOT) serves as a critical parameter in speech production research, marking the transition from background noise to the start of the speech signal. While manual annotation remains the gold standard for identifying SOT, its labor-intensive nature can result in considerable fatigue, thereby jeopardizing the accuracy of the annotation. Here, we present Praditor, a semi-automatic speech onset detection tool, leveraging a combination of algorithms consisting of density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise (DBSCAN) and first-derivative thresholding. Praditor offers a

Acoustic Analysis of Voice in Singers: A Systematic Review.

PURPOSE: Singers are vocal athletes having specific demands from their voice and require special consideration during voice evaluation. Presently, there is a lack of standards for acoustic evaluation in them. The aim of the present study was to systematically review the available literature on the acoustic analysis of voice in singers. METHOD: A systematic review of studies on acoustic analysis of voice in singers (PubMed/MEDLINE, CINAHL, Scopus, ProQuest, Cochrane, Ovid, Science Direct, and Shodhganga) was carried out. Key words based on PIO (population-investigation-outcome) were used to de

Adults with a history of recreational cannabis use have altered speech production.

Stereotypical depictions of speech in cannabis users often suggest slow, laboured output, yet objective evidence supporting this assumption is extremely limited. We know that depressants or hallucinogenic drugs such as cannabis can cause acute changes in communication and speech rate, but the long-lasting effects of cannabis use on speech are not well described. The aim of this study was to investigate speech in individuals with a history of recreational cannabis use compared to non-drug-using healthy controls. Speech samples were collected from a carefully described cohort of 31 adults with a

Laryngograph: speech pattern element tools for therapy, training and assessment.

The clinically based, real-time analysis of speech into physically definable elements, which are of direct perceptual and productive importance, has become more readily possible in recent years as the result of microprocessor developments. The combination of the acoustic signal of speech derived from a microphone together with the accompanying Laryngograph signal provides the basis for a highly reliable set of facilities. The paper describes methods and results for the analysis of voice, frication and timbre for both quantitative analysis and teaching and therapy using interactive visual displ

Not So Simple, and Not So Fast: The Limits of Speech Rate and Turn-Taking Modifications for Treatment of Early Stuttering. A Response to Onslow et al. (2026).

PURPOSE: We argue against suggestions for a new "two-factor" approach to early stuttering that counsels rate and turn-taking adjustments to child-directed parental speech. CONCLUSION: We find that (a) the suggested approach is not new; (b) the limited pilot data are directly contradicted by a much larger scale, longer duration study published in this journal this year that shows no relationships between rate and turn-taking and recovery from stuttering; (c) rate and turn-taking adjustments may bring with them additional negative changes in parental speech; and (d) the proposed treatment conti

Conversational speech of school-age children after syllable-timed speech treatment for stuttering.

Purpose: The purpose of this laboratory study was to investigate whether rhythmic speech was primarily responsible for stuttering reductions in four school-aged children after the instatement stage of the Westmead Program of syllable-timed speech (STS) intervention. The study was designed to inform further development of the program. Reduction in variability of vowel duration is a marker of STS, and it was predicted that this would be present in the children's conversational speech after Stage 1 of the program if they were using STS. To strengthen such a finding, it was also predicted that the

Modeling of oropharyngeal articulatory adaptation to compensate for the acoustic effects of nasalization.

Hypernasality is one of the most detrimental speech disturbances that lead to declines of speech intelligibility. Velopharyngeal inadequacy, which is associated with anatomic defects such as cleft palate or neuromuscular disorders that affect velopharygneal function, is the primary cause of hypernasality. A simulation study by Rong and Kuehn [J. Speech Lang. Hear. Res. 55(5), 1438-1448 (2012)] demonstrated that properly adjusted oropharyngeal articulation can reduce nasality for vowels synthesized with an articulatory model [Mermelstein, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 53(4), 1070-1082 (1973)]. In this st

Evaluation of an Automatic Speech Recognition Platform for Dysarthric Speech.

INTRODUCTION: The use of commercially available automatic speech recognition (ASR) software is challenged when dysarthria accompanies a physical disability. To overcome this issue, a mobile and personal speech assistant (mPASS) platform was developed, using a speaker-dependent ASR software. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of the proposed platform and to compare mPASS recognition accuracy to a commercial speaker-independent ASR software. In addition, secondary aims were to investigate the relationship between severity of dysarthria and accuracy and to explore p

Word-final complexity in speech sound intervention: two case studies.

In speech sound intervention, consonant clusters promote generalisation (i.e. improvement in untreated sounds and words), ostensibly due to their relative complexity compared to other phonological targets. However, our understanding of clusters as intervention targets is largely restricted to those in word-initial position (e.g. [fl-], flip). The present study extends available work to consider the effects of word-final consonant cluster targets (e.g. [-ks]). Phonologically complex word-final clusters may be morphologically simple (e.g. mix) or morphologically complex (e.g. packs, inflected wi
