Provision of Speech-Language Pathology Telepractice Services Using Apple iPads.

This exploratory study evaluated the effectiveness of Apple (Cupertino, CA) iPad(®) (second generation) to deliver telepractice speech and/or language services. Five children and their parents/guardians, as well as four adult participants, received services for communication disorders in a university clinic setting over two academic semesters. The children met some of their speech goals and all of their language goals. All adult clients met some of their communication goals. Personal opinions about telepractice did not change statistically before and after therapy. The major problem identified

Incorporating speech-language pathology within Australian neonatal intensive care units.

Working in neonatal intensive care units (NICU) is considered to be advanced practice for speech-language pathologists (SLPs) requiring post-graduate specialised education and ongoing clinical mentoring, not easily accessible within some countries such as Australia. This review investigated whether there was evidence to support SLPs as core NICU team members, rather than fleeting therapists. The review found that the roles and responsibilities of SLPs in NICUs included assessment and intervention of preterm infant communication, feeding and swallowing using a family-centred approach. This appr

Speech and language therapy/pathology: perspectives on a gendered profession.

BACKGROUND: The speech and language therapy/pathology (SLT/SLP) profession is characterized by extreme 'occupational sex segregation', a term used to refer to persistently male- or female-dominated professions. Men make up only 2.5% of all SLTs in the UK, and a similar imbalance is found in other countries. Despite calls to increase diversity in the allied health professions more generally, research into the reasons for occupational sex segregation and gender as a potential key factor remains scarce. AIMS: This study aims to explore the potential role of gender/gendered discourses in people's

Prediction of pathology in primary progressive language and speech disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) encompasses a variety of clinicopathologic entities. The antemortem prediction of the underlying pathologic lesions is reputed to be difficult. This study sought to characterize correlations between 1) the different clinical variants of primary progressive language and speech disorders and 2) the pathologic diagnosis. METHODS: The latter was available for 18 patients having been prospectively monitored in the Lille Memory Clinic (France) between 1993 and 2008. RESULTS: The patients were diagnosed with progressive anarthria (n = 5), agrammat

Quality assurance guidelines for clinical practice in speech/language pathology.

The quality assurance guidelines for clinical practice in speech/language pathology are effective for assuring the provision of quality clinical services to patients, as well as increasing revenues for hospitals and home care agencies by decreasing or eliminating denials for speech/language pathology claims. The guidelines can be used to evaluate the service and performance of speech therapists employed either directly or by independent contract.

Collaborative approaches with stakeholders in speech-language pathology: Narrative literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Collaborative approaches in speech-language pathology (SLP) aim to integrate the experience of clients and people important to them by including these stakeholders actively in decision making. This inclusion can lead to more effective, engaging, and safer SLP practice. A variety of collaborative approaches have evolved in response to sociocultural contexts, and as a result, there are many different approaches currently in use such as co-design, co-production, and co-creation. However, despite widening acceptance and utilisation of collaborative approaches, the use and evidence fo

Perceptions of telepractice pedagogy in speech-language pathology: A quantitative analysis.

Introduction Despite the growth of telecommunication applications to provide clinical healthcare services, there has been little attention to the pedagogical framework needed to train healthcare students to deliver these services. Methods In this exploratory investigation, perceptions of speech-language pathology/therapy (SLP/SLT) faculty ( n = 31), graduate students ( n = 16), and telehealth ("telepractice") clinicians ( n = 16) were examined with a 15-item survey regarding the 1) comparative pedagogical importance of four skills common to telepractice and face-to-face service (f2f) delivery,

Re-Evaluating Evidence for Best Practice in Paediatric Speech-Language Pathology.

BACKGROUND: Systematic reviews of treatment trials for children with speech and language difficulties often exemplify the limited clinical usefulness of the evidence base, reflecting recent literature in evidence-based medicine. Other studies report that clinicians often fail to seek information about best practice, across the health professions. Consequently, clinical researchers, including those in speech-language pathology, have sought alternative methodologies for determining best practice. SUMMARY: Some approaches focus on "pragmatic trials," usually as part of existing health services.

The end of an affair: Discharging clients from speech-language pathology.

This paper expands on the lead article by Hersh (2010) regarding a number of challenges that face speech-language pathologists (SLPs) when ending therapy, in this case focusing on children's speech and language impairment. Children's speech and language impairments are often long-term with impacts on other aspects of their functioning; there is little clarity about the notion of resolution and there is little research about optimum points of discharge or ending therapy. In the lead article, Hersh (2010) reports the personal concerns experienced by SLPs working with people with aphasia. Similar

Readability of Patient-Reported Outcome Measures in Adult Speech-Language Pathology Practice.

PURPOSE: Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are widely used in adult speech-language pathology to capture patient- and caregiver-perceived symptoms, functional impact, and treatment outcomes. For PROM data to be valid and equitable, end users must be able to comprehend and complete these instruments as intended. This study evaluated the readability of validated English-language PROMs used in adult speech-language pathology practice and examined variability across clinical domains. METHOD: Seventy-four validated adult speech-language pathology PROMs spanning eight clinical domains were

Simulated Learning Experiences in Global Speech-Language Pathology Programs: A Scoping Review.

PURPOSE: Simulated learning experiences (SLEs) are increasingly utilized in health care education and to train speech-language pathology students. The increasing popularity of simulations, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, has generated interest in their potential for achieving teaching and learning outcomes and a need to map the evidence in the field. This review explores the application of SLEs in speech-language pathology training. It examines the types of simulated learning approaches used across clinical contexts in relation to student outcomes and stakeholder perceptions to guid
