Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) in small ruminants.

Small ruminants are an important component of the global production systems of meat and wool, and their reproductive biology is well known. However, the incorporation of assisted reproduction techniques (ART) in the production systems of small ruminants is not as well developed as for other domestic species. Normally, production systems that incorporate ARTs are restricted to artificial insemination or in vivo embryo transfer. Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is one of the ARTs techniques reported for small ruminants and consists of the injection of spermatozoa inside an oocyte, bypassi

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection in livestock species: an update.

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is a powerful technique in the field of assisted reproduction (ART) and provides exciting opportunities for studying the basic mechanisms of fertilization and early embryo development. Nevertheless, its application in agriculture and conservation biology has been greatly hampered by the low success rate reported for this method in respect of economically important species. Specifically, the rates of blastocyst formation and live newborn are greatly reduced when zygotes are generated by ICSI. Except for humans, ICSI remains a low efficiency technology in

[Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) in the management of azoospermia].

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to analyse all attempts of ICSI performed in our centre between 1995 and 1997 with surgically harvested sperm for the treatment of secretory and excretory azoospermia. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 71 infertile couples, in which the man suffered from secretory (n = 8) or excretory azoospermia (n = 63), were managed with 94 attempts of ICSI. RESULTS: ICSI was able to be performed 85 times with 82 embryo transfers resulting in 29 clinical pregnancies. The clinical pregnancy rate per ICSI attempt was comparable with sperm obtained on the day of ICSI or previo

Factors affecting success with intracytoplasmic sperm injection.

In this study, 141 couples underwent 163 cycles of in vitro fertilization (IVF) and embryo transfer in which the eggs were inseminated by intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). Overall, 41% of the injected eggs were normally fertilized and 81% of the resulting embryos were suitable for cryopreservation (91 embryos) or uterine transfer. From 153 fresh embryo transfers, 45 ongoing or delivered pregnancies (27.6% per cycle) were achieved, and of the 507 embryos transferred, 54 successfully implanted giving an implantation rate per embryo of 10.7%. Five additional pregnancies did not yield a via

Conventional In Vitro Fertilization and Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection.

In vitro fertilization (IVF) and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) are assisted reproductive technologies used to help individuals or couples conceive a child. IVF involves combining an oocyte and sperm outside the body in a laboratory to create embryos. Following ovarian stimulation, oocytes retrieved through a minor surgical procedure are mixed with sperm in the laboratory. If fertilization occurs, resulting embryos are cultured for several days, and one (or more) embryo(s) is (are) then transferred into the uterus (either "fresh" or after cryopreservation) in hopes of implantation and

Intracytoplasmic morphologically selected sperm injection, but for whom?

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is performed in cases of infertility by injecting a motile and morphologically normal sperm cell under a routine ×400 magnification at which is hard to distinguish morphologically healthy sperm. Recently, the use of high-powered differential interference contrast optics gave the opportunity to select a sperm under ultra-high magnification of ×10,160. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy of the intracytoplasmic morphologically selected sperm injection (IMSI) technique in different infertility populations undergoing ICSI. Main outcome

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)--what are the risks?

In vitro fertilization used in combination with intracytoplasmic sperm injection allows otherwise sterile couples to become parents. Despite recent studies on the safety of these technologies, there is still only an incomplete picture of the risks associated with the usage of these assisted reproductive techniques to offspring. The risk of multiple gestations continues to be of major concern because of its association with low birth weight, preterm delivery, and increased perinatal mortality. This article outlines the risks associated with in vitro fertilization/intracytoplasmic sperm injectio

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection in the treatment of male subfertility.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the results obtained after intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) in couples with male factor subfertility. DESIGN: Retrospective analysis of results obtained after ICSI in the unit of in vitro fertilisation in a private centre for infertility. RESULTS: Application of ICSI in treatment cycles for male subfertility resulted in a fertilisation rate of 62%. An embryo transfer was done in 98% of the cycles, resulting in a 24% pregnancy rate/ET or 22% per cycle. CONCLUSION: ICSI is the first microfertilisation technique with reproducible high fertilisation rates in differ

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection today: a personal review.

There no longer seem to be any categories of male factor infertility that cannot be treated with intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). Even for men with azoospermia caused either by obstruction or by germinal failure, ICSI may be performed successfully. The only failures will be in azoospermic men who have neither spermatozoa nor spermatids retrievable from the testis, but these men comprise a small percentage of the cases with severe male factor. The source of the spermatozoa and the cause of the sperm defect appear to have no effect on the success of the procedure, whether the spermatozoo

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection for treatment of the infertile male.

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) with in vitro fertilization represents one of the most significant advances in fertility technology. In this relatively new procedure, a single viable sperm is microinjected into an oocyte that has been extracted transvaginally. After fertilization occurs, the embryo is transferred into the uterus. This procedure now affords men who were previously thought to be irreversibly infertile the chance to initiate their own biologic pregnancy. However, because of the procedure's significant costs and its potential risk to the mother, careful selection of couple

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection in dysmorphic human oocytes.

Fertilisation and development of dysmorphic human oocytes recovered from hyperstimulated ovaries have been evaluated following intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) for treatment of male infertility. A total of 2968 oocytes at metaphase II of meiosis were injected, of which 806 (27.2%) were dysmorphic at the light microscopic level. Cytoplasmic abnormalities included granularity, areas of necrosis, organelle clustering, vacuoles, and accumulating saccules of smooth endoplasmic reticulum. Anomalies of the first polar body and zona pellucida, as well as non-spherical shapes of oocytes, were al

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI): the Brussels experience.

The present report covers the results of a 26-month period in which 1275 consecutive treatment cycles by intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) were performed in 919 couples. These couples were afflicted with male factor infertility and had had at least one previous failed conventional in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment cycle. In other couples, the husband had semen parameters incompatible with conventional IVF or suffered from excretory azoospermia which required microsurgical epididymal sperm aspiration or testicular sperm retrieval. Overall, the 2 pronuclear (PN) fertilization rate was

Surgical sperm retrieval and intracytoplasmic sperm injection as treatment of obstructive azoospermia.

Male genital tract obstructions may result from infections, previous inguinal and scrotal surgery (vasectomy) and congenital bilateral absence of the vas deferens (CBAVD). Microsurgery can sometimes be successful in treating the obstruction. In other cases and in cases of failed surgical intervention, the patient can be treated by microsurgical or percutaneous epididymal sperm aspiration (MESA, PESA) or testicular sperm extraction (TESE) and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). We present the results of 39 ICSI procedures for obstructive azoospermia in 24 couples. The aetiology of the obst

Effects of the timing of testicular sperm retrieval on intracytoplasmic sperm injection outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate reproductive outcomes according to the timing of testicular sperm retrieval. METHODS: The study included 282 infertile couples divided into three groups: group A (freeze-thawed testicular sperm extraction [TESE] sperm, n=233), group B (fresh TESE sperm collected 1 day before ovum pickup, n=22), and group C (fresh TESE sperm collected on the same day as ovum pickup, n=27). The indications for TESE were surgically uncorrectable azoospermia or ejaculation failure, often accompanied by medical comorbidities such as diabetes mellitus and spinal cord injury.

Influence of motility and vitality in intracytoplasmic sperm injection with ejaculated and testicular sperm.

The vitality of spermatozoa used for intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is a crucial factor for fertilization, establishment and outcome of a pregnancy in assisted reproductive technique cycles. The sperm origin may also be a limiting factor, although little is known about this issue. It is known that the motility of injected spermatozoa and their origin from ejaculate or testicular biopsies are important predictors in terms of fertilization, pregnancy and birth rates. Oocytes of patients in 2593 cycles were retrieved in our in vitro fertilization programme and inseminated via ICSI. We us
