Metachronous cellulitis caused by rare nonfermentative Gram-negative bacilli, Sphingobacterium and Myroides species: A case report and literature review.

Cellulitis is one of the most common forms of skin and soft tissue infections, traditionally attributed to beta-hemolytic streptococci and Staphylococcus aureus. While Gram-negative organisms, particularly nonfermentative gram-negative bacilli (NFGNB), are ubiquitous in soil and aquatic ecosystems, they are rarely reported as causative pathogens of cellulitis. We report a case of metachronous cellulitis caused by two species of NFGNB: Sphingobacterium and Myroides species. An 81-year-old male was admitted with cellulitis of the left upper extremity. Sphingobacterium species was identified from

Sphingobacterium spiritivorum bacteremia due to cellulitis in an elderly man with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and congestive heart failure: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Sphingobacterium spiritivorum is a glucose non-fermenting Gram-negative rod, formerly classified as one of the Flavobacterium species. It is characterized by a large number of cellular membrane sphingophospholipids. Sphingobacterium species are ubiquitous and isolated from natural environments, such as soil and water. However, they rarely cause infections in humans. Only a limited number of cases have been reported in elderly and immunocompromised patients with underlying diseases and predisposing factors. CASE PRESENTATION: An 80-year-old Japanese man with chronic obstructive pul

Insights on mining the pangenome of Sphingobacterium thalpophilum NMS02 S296 from the resistant banana cultivar Pisang lilin confirms the antifungal action against Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense.

INTRODUCTION: Fusarium wilt, caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense (Foc), poses a significant global threat to banana cultivation. Conventional methods of disease management are increasingly challenged, thus making it necessary to explore alternative strategies. Bacterial endophytes, particularly from resistant genotypes, are gaining attention as potential biocontrol agents. Sphingobacterium thalpophilum, isolated from the resistant banana cultivar Pisang lilin (JALHSB010000001-JALHSB010000029), presents an intriguing prospect for combating Fusarium wilt. However, its underlying biocontr

Seeking soil microbial degraders and enzymatic genes for efficient biomass recycling.

Biodegradation is the most sustainable biomass recycling strategy, yet the absence of efficient microbial degraders remains a critical bottleneck. While soil microorganisms can decompose diverse biomass, their functional specificity for distinct agricultural by-products remains inadequately characterized. To address this, five agricultural by-products, including fish skin, soybean meal, shrimp shell, corn straw and chicken feather, were individually or combinatorially incubated in soil. Comparative analysis of 16 S rRNA amplicons and metagenomics from actively degrading microbial communities v

Dissemination of resistance genes in duck/fish polyculture ponds in Guangdong Province: correlations between Cu and Zn and antibiotic resistance genes.

Duck/fish polyculture farming is a typical farming model in the Pearl River delta in southern China. We examined soil, water, and sediment samples from three duck-fish farms in Guangdong Province in September and December 2014. We determined the abundance of three metal resistance genes, 16S rDNA, and 23 antibiotic resistance genes encoding resistance to tetracycline, sulfonamides, quinolones, chloramphenicol, and β-lactamases. Microbial community structure was quantified by Illumina high-throughput sequencing of 16S rDNA genes. We found a prevalence of antibiotic resistance genes and the sul1

Aminoalcohol-Induced Activation of Organophosphorus Hydrolase (OPH) towards Diisopropylfluorophosphate (DFP).

Aminoalcohols have been addressed as activating buffers for alkaline phosphatase. However, there is no record on the buffer activation regarding organophosphorus hydrolase (OPH). Here we reported the activating effects of aminoalcohols on OPH-catalyzed hydrolysis of diisopropylfluorophosphate (DFP), an analog molecule of G-type warfare agents. The kinetic parametors kcat, Vmax and kcat/Km in the OPH reaction were remarkably increased in the buffers (pH 8.0, 25°C) containing aminoalcohols with C2 between nitrogen (N) and oxygen (O) in their structures, including triethanolamine (TEA), diethanol

Molecular characterization and kinetics of isoprene degrading bacteria.

Isoprene, the highly reactive volatile organic compound, is used as monomer for the synthesis of several useful polymers. Its extensive production and usage leads to contamination of air. Once released, it alters the atmospheric chemistry by reacting with hydroxyl radicals (OH) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) to generate tropospheric ozone. Its prolonged exposure causes deleterious effects in human and plants. Therefore, its removal from the contaminated environment through biodegradation, provides a promising remedial solution. In the present study, isoprene utilizing bacteria namely, Pseudomonas s

Interrogation of the Substrate Profile and Catalytic Properties of the Phosphotriesterase from Sphingobium sp. Strain TCM1: An Enzyme Capable of Hydrolyzing Organophosphate Flame Retardants and Plasticizers.

The most familiar organophosphorus compounds are the neurotoxic insecticides and nerve agents. A related group of organophosphorus compounds, the phosphotriester plasticizers and flame retardants, has recently become widely used. Unlike the neurotoxic phosphotriesters, the plasticizers and flame retardants lack an easily hydrolyzable bond. While the hydrolysis of the neurotoxic organophosphates by phosphotriesterase enzymes is well-known, the lack of a labile bond in the flame retardants and plasticizers renders them inert to typical phosphotriesterases. A phosphotriesterase from Sphingobium s

Bacteria surface charge varies across species and is independent of cell wall type.

Variation in the surface charge of the cell envelope across bacterial species is not well understood. The absence of systematic investigations comparing taxonomically diverse bacterial species has led to confusion about the influence of cell wall type (i.e. Gram-negative or Gram-positive bacteria) on surface charge. In this study, dynamic light scattering (DLS) was used to determine surface charge via zeta potential measurements of 12 phylogenetically diverse bacterial species spanning four bacterial phyla. Surface charge of six Gram-positive species (Bacillus subtilis, Streptococcus thermophi

The Caenorhabditis elegans microbiome impacts microsporidia infection through nutrient limitation and spore inactivation.

Microsporidia are fungal parasites that can only reproduce inside the cells of a host, and they infect most animal groups, including humans and agriculturally important species. Animals also harbor a microbiome, which can shape resistance to infection, but the mechanisms by which bacteria influence microsporidia infection are poorly understood. To address this, we tested how bacteria associated with the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans affect infection by its natural microsporidian parasite, Nematocida parisii. Here we show that nematodes grown on Chryseobacterium scophthalmum or Sphingobacteri
