Twenty-seven cases of multiple noncontiguous spinal fracture were reported. The injury located mostly at thoracolumbar levels, and primary injuries occurred in thorax (n = 13, 50%), second injuries occurred in lumbus (n = 14, 53.8%). The cord function of 12 patients were Frankel A, 5 were C and 4 were D; five patients were normal (Frankel E). The incidence of neurologic injury was significantly different between multiple noncontiguous and contiguous spinal fractures (P < 0.01). There were 17 followed-up cases. Eight were recovered with Frankel 1 degree, 2 with 2 degree and 4 without change. Th

The assessment of stability is one of the most important problems in the analysis of vertebral trauma. There are numerous indirect signs of instability. The "three column model" provides a concept towards a better understanding of instability. Compared with the conventional complex classifications, the new system based on the "three column model" provides certain advantages.

BACKGROUND: Patients with epilepsy have a higher risk of skeletal injuries, and some of these fractures occur in the spine during a seizure. Seizure-induced spinal fractures (SISF) are unusual injuries that typically occur in the thoracolumbar spine. Because these skeletal injuries are not well described in the literature, this article aims to analyze the characteristics of this uncommon clinical entity.
METHODS: A PubMed and Scopus search adhering to preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses guidelines was performed to include studies reporting patients with SISF. Th

BACKGROUND: Sports-related injuries are the third commonest cause of spine fractures. Spinal fractures incurred as a result of partaking in sport by their nature are different from those associated with frailty and road traffic accidents. The patient demographics and nature of fractures associated with sports activities are not well documented. We aim to describe the management and outcome of patients with a sports-related spine fracture in a single U.K. major trauma center in a 6-year time period.
METHODS: Patients with sports-related spinal fractures were identified from the Trauma Audit an

BACKGROUND: Injuries to the spinal cord are not only dreaded because of the high risks existing during the acute phase, but also because of their potential long-term sequelae. Horseback riding also poses a high risk of spinal injuries. We therefore evaluated the most frequent characteristics of accidents leading to long-term sequelae, the primary long-term discomfort resulting from such injuries caused by horseback riding accidents and the way injured persons changed their behaviour after the accidents.
PATIENTS: Our study included all cases of horseback riding injuries registered in the Depa

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory spondyloarthropathy with the potential for progressive spinal stiffness that ultimately makes patients susceptible to spinal fractures with traumatic spinal cord injury from even low-energy trauma. Treatment of patients with AS and spinal fractures (AS+FX) is controversial because, although these patients need especially rigorous stabilization, surgery has been associated with an increased risk of complications and persistent neurological deficits. The purpose of this retrospective case series was to profile patients with AS+FX from a 19-ye

We report the outcome of 30 patients with multilevel noncontiguous spinal fractures treated between 2000 and 2005. Ten cases were treated conservatively (group A), eight cases were operated on at only one level (group B), and 12 cases were treated surgically at both levels (group C). All cases were followed up for 14-60 months (mean 32 months). Initial mobilisation with a wheelchair or crutches in group A was 9.2 +/- 1.1 weeks, which was significantly longer than groups B and C with 6.8+/-0.7 weeks and 3.1 +/- 0.4 weeks, respectively. Operative time and blood loss in group C were significantly

Osteoporotic spinal compression fractures are a significant health risk for elderly females, as well as other patient groups. These fractures are associated with an increased risk of mortality in comparison with age-matched controls. Recent techniques of minimally invasive surgical treatment show promising early results with respect to pain reduction and restoration of function, with low procedural complication rates.

European spine journal : official publication of the European Spine Society, the European Spinal Deformity Society, and the European Section of the Cervical Spine Research Society1996eng
Thirty-one consecutive patients with ankylosing spondylitis and spinal fractures were reviewed. There were 6 women and 25 men with a mean age of 60 +/- 11 years; 19 had cervical and 12 had thoracolumbar injuries. Of the patients with cervical fracture, two had an additional cervical fracture and one had an additional thoracic fracture. Three trauma mechanisms were identified: high-energy trauma in 13 patients, low-energy trauma in 13 and insufficiency fracture in 5. One-third of the patients suffered immediate neurological impairment, a further one-third developed neurological impairment befor

The value of computed tomography (CT) compared with conventional x-ray was assessed in 29 spinal and 9 pelvic fractures. In the so called bursting fractures of spinal vertebrae the position of bone fragments in the neural canal was shown better by CT. The neural canal was remarkably narrowed on several occasions without the patient having any clinical symptoms of root or medullary compression. In 2 patients a fracture of laminae was discernible only on CT. Vertical fractures of vertebral bodies were also difficult to distinguish on the conventional plain x-ray. CT was helpful for planning of t

PURPOSE: The epidemiology of spinal fractures in polytrauma, population characteristics and their hospital outcomes are not well defined. This study aimed to describe the epidemiology and outcomes of spinal fractures in a consensus defined polytrauma cohort.
METHODS: A 13-year (2009-2021) retrospective study was conducted on Newcastle Definition based polytrauma patients at a Level-1 centre. Polytrauma patients were categorised based on the presence of vertebral fractures and compared in demographics, injury mechanism, injury severity and pattern, physiological parameters, treatment aspects,

The ankylosed spine is prone to fracture even after minor trauma due to its changed biomechanical properties. The two central features of ankylosing spondylitis (AS) that promote the pathological remodeling of the spine are inflammation and new bone formation. AS is also associated with osteoporosis that is attributed to an uncoupling of the bone formation and bone resorption processes. Therefore, bone resorption occurs and promotes weakening of the spine as well as increased risk of vertebral fractures which can be hugely different in terms of clinical relevance. Even in the presence of sympt

INTRODUCTION: Vertebral destruction secondary to multiple myeloma is a significant clinical issue, and controversy still exists over how many levels should undergo kyphoplasty in multiple myeloma. In addition, in vertebrae that have lost wall integrity, cement extravasation remains an important consideration and is relatively contraindicated.
METHODS: Forty-three symptomatic vertebral fractures from multiple myeloma were diagnosed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In levels with anterior vertebral wall compromise, two distinct sequential applications of cement were performed. In levels wit

OBJECTIVE: To study the treatment of spinal fractures in ankylosing spondylitis.
METHODS: Nineteen cases of spinal fractures complicating ankylosing spondylitis admitted in our hospital were studied retrospectively.
RESULTS: All of 19 cases were up to the diagnosis standards of ankylosing spondylitis. Eleven patients had cervical fracture and 8 had thoracolumbar fracture. Of the patients with cervical fracture, fractures occurred at C(5 - 7) in 9 patients. Of the patients with thoracolumbar injury, stress fractures were seen in 7 patients and all of seven fractures occurred at T(10)-L(2). Si

INTRODUCTION: The ankylosed spine is prone to trauma even with after application of force at low energy levels. Multi-level vertebral bony fusions produce long lever arms, susceptible to fracture, with an increased risk of neurological injury. Additional problems result from delayed presentation and osteoporosis. These patients are also often at high risk of complications, making conventional open spinal surgery less appealing. We present the outcomes of percutaneous fixation and its advantages in this high risk group of patients.
METHODS: A retrospective review of a series of 10 patients wit

To improve the technique of intraoperative sonography of the spinal canal, a teaching model of the thoracolumbar spine was developed. It allows to simulate the typical spinal stenosis of a vertebral fracture and the sonographic procedure to detect and measure such a lesion. Moreover, partial laminectomy and modification of a fixateur interne set-up, which are preconditions for successful sonography, can be simulated. Independent of the surgical qualification, a high precision in sonographic localisation and measurement of the spinal canal stenosis was achieved by the training. The results coul

Treatment approaches to a patient with polytrauma comprising combined spinal and hip fractures need more careful planning than those for a patient with an isolated spinal or hip fracture. The patient in this case presentation had multiple burst fractures of the spine, but was neurologically intact. The spinal injuries were treated conservatively. The patient also had concomitant unstable intertrochanteric fractures of the hip, which were treated surgically. The presence of a thoracic or lumbar fracture, in addition to a hip or femur fracture, may require an altered therapeutic approach. We pre

BACKGROUND: Spinal cord injury (SCI) and spinal fracture are major complications in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) who sustain spinal trauma. The purpose of this study was to investigate the incidence, predictors, and sequelae of spinal trauma in patients with AS.
METHODS: This retrospective study included patients with AS who were admitted for spinal trauma between January 1, 2006, and June 30, 2016. The study compared clinical outcomes of patients between group 1: SCI alone, group 2: spinal fracture alone (no SCI), and group 3: both SCI and spinal fracture.
RESULTS: Of the 6285

STUDY DESIGN: a retrospective study of surgically managed patients.
OBJECTIVE: to evaluate the results of posterior stabilization of thoracolumbar fracture using nonfusion method followed by the removal of metal implants within an appropriate period. Changes in the sagittal alignment and the restoration of segmental motion were also investigated.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: posterior fusion using a transpedicular screw system remains the treatment of choice for the management of thoracolumbar and lumbar fractures. However, fusion methods result in the permanent loss of segmental motion. If b
