Some factors of Cr(III) bioaccumulation on Spirulina platensis were studied in detail. It was found that the bioaccumulation of Cr(III) on Spirulina platensis involved two steps: rapid adsorption and slow absorption. Chromic(III) compounds with weaker chemical bond had higher bioaccumulation efficiency. Under the same algal cell concentration, Cr(III) bioaccumulation rosed up with Cr(III) concentration. On the other hand, with Cr(III) concentration not changed, the total bioaccumulation of Cr(III) on Spirulina platensis increased with algal cell concentration, but the Cr(III) bioaccumulation o

As an important alternative to alleviate the pressure of fresh water shortage, seawater application is facing a great challenge on the wastewater treatment due to the salinity brought from seawater. Spirulina platensis originated from salty lake was used to treat mixed synthetic toilet flushing wastewater of seawater with washing wastewater of freshwater. It was showed that 79.96% of TN (to 15.69mg/L), 93.35% of TP (to 1.03mg/L) and 90.02% of CODCr (to 90.24mg/L) were removed with 0.76g/L of biomass production in the optimal ratio 7:3 of the above mixed synthetic wastewater. Enzymatic hydrolysis can release bioactive peptides from spirulina proteins, but the influence of protease type and molecular-weight fraction on antioxidant and cell viability endpoints remains incompletely defined. This study compared papain- and trypsin-derived fractions from a food-grade, C-phycocyanin-rich spirulina preparation. Hydrolysis was monitored by UV‒visible spectroscopy and quantified using the o-phthaldialdehyde degree-of-hydrolysis assay, after which six membrane-derived fractions (P1, P5, P10, T1, T5, and T10) were evaluated by ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and 2,2-

Microcystis aeruginosa produces an abundant cyanotoxin (microcystins (MCs) in freshwater supplies. MCs have adverse health hazards to animals and humans. Microcystin-leucine-arginine (microcystin-LR or MC-LR) is the most studied among these MCs due to their high toxicity. So, this study was designed to evaluate the possible therapeutic role of the natural algal food supplement, Spirulina platensis (SP), against MC-LR-induced toxic effects in male Wistar rats. Forty rats were randomly divided into five groups. Control and SP groups orally administered distilled water and SP (1000 mg/kg/daily),

Cadmium is one of the most toxic substances found in aquatic ecosystems. This metal tends to accumulate in photosynthetic plants and fish and is transferred to humans causing many diseases. It has to be removed from our environment to reduce any health risks. Dry biomass of the microalga (cyanobacterium) Spirulina platensis was used as biosorbent for the removal of cadmium ions (Cd(2+)) from aqueous solutions. The effects of different levels of pH (3-9), biomass concentration (0.25-2 g), temperature (18-46 °C), metal concentration (40-200 mg/l) and contact time (30-120 min) were tested. Batch

Spirulina refers to two species of blue green algae (Arthrospira platensis, and A. maxima) consumed by humans as food for centuries. While, Spirulina has been shown to have immune enhancing properties in several animal and human studies, there are no systematic studies in dogs. The aim of this study was to evaluate the immunomodulatory effect of dietary supplementation with Spirulina in dogs. The study was conducted in two phases: Pre-test (8 wks.) and Test (42 wks.). Thirty adult dogs (mean 2.9 yrs.) were randomized into two groups and fed a nutritionally complete diet in the "Pre-test" phase

Spirulina and Chlorella are nutrient-rich microalgae widely consumed as dietary supplements; however, their high biosorption capacity raises concerns regarding the accumulation of environmental contaminants. This study analyzed 52 commercially available Spirulina and Chlorella products (29 conventional, 23 organic) to assess the co-occurrence of heavy metals and pharmaceutical residues, as these two classes of contaminants represent distinct yet complementary indicators of environmental pollution-heavy metals reflect long-term inputs from natural and industrial sources, while pharmaceuticals s

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is characterized by massive intra-articular infiltration of pro-inflammatory macrophages, leading to articular immune dysfunction, severe synovitis, and ultimately joint erosion. Comprehensive remodeling of articular immune homeostasis and bone homeostasis is essential for alleviating RA. Here we report on Spirulina platensis (SP), a natural microorganism commercially farmed worldwide as a food, as an efficient regulator of both synovial inflammation and osteoclast differentiation in male RA mouse models. SP reduces excessive reactive oxygen species and downregulates
