Demonstrated laboratory effectiveness of an anthelmintic medicated feed for the treatment of Oxyspirura petrowi infections in northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus).

In May 2024, a medicated anthelmintic feed was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat parasitic infection in wild quail following evidence linking parasites to northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) population impacts. During the approval process, it was confirmed that the feed significantly reduced parasite burdens in wild bobwhite populations after 3 weeks of treatment. However, no studies were conducted on the drug's efficacy in individual bobwhite in a controlled laboratory setting. In this study, we infected pen-reared bobwhite with Oxyspirura petrowi, an eyeworm comm

Seasonal variation of Mastophorus muris (Nematoda: Spirurida) in the water vole Arvicola amphibius from southern Sweden.

This study focused on the spirurid nematode Mastophorus muris in water voles (Arvicola amphibius) trapped in three regions in southern Sweden during spring and fall 2013. The collection of water voles formed part of a larger project (EMIRO) on the cestode Echinococcus multilocularis in rodents. The voles' stomach contents were examined for the presence of M. muris. Prevalence, mean abundance and mean intensity of infection were calculated. A generalized linear model model was used to examine the effects of sex, functional group, season and region on the number of M. muris individuals in each v

Scanning electron microscopy observations of the hedgehog stomach worm, Physaloptera clausa (Spirurida: Physalopteridae).

BACKGROUND: Physaloptera clausa (Spirurida: Physalopteridae) nematodes parasitize the stomach of the European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) and cause weight loss, anorexia and gastric lesions. The present study provides the first morphological description of adult P. clausa from the stomachs of infected hedgehogs, using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). METHODS: From June to October 2011, 10 P. clausa from European hedgehogs were fixed, dried, coated and subjected to SEM examination. RESULTS: Males and females (22-30 mm and 28-47 mm, respectively) were stout, with the cuticle reflecting o

Pre-existing Microfilarial Infections of American Robins (Passeriformes: Turdidae) and Common Grackles (Passeriformes: Icteridae) Have Limited Impact on Enhancing Dissemination of West Nile Virus in Culex pipiens Mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae).

Microfilariae (MF) are the immature stages of filarial nematode parasites and inhabit the blood and dermis of all classes of vertebrates, except fish. Concurrent ingestion of MF and arboviruses by mosquitoes can enhance mosquito transmission of virus compared to when virus is ingested alone. Shortly after being ingested, MF penetrate the mosquito's midgut and may introduce virus into the mosquito's hemocoel, creating a disseminated viral infection much sooner than normal. This phenomenon is known as microfilarial enhancement. Both American Robins and Common Grackles harbor MF-that is, Eufilari

Ultrastructure of the body wall of Cystidicoloides ephemeridarum (Nematoda, Cystidicolidae) in relation to the histopathology of this nematode in salmonids.

Light, scanning and transmission electron microscope examinations of adult Cystidicoloides ephemeridarum nematodes, parasitic in the stomach of brown trout (Salmo trutta fario L.), revealed that the body wall is composed of a cuticle, a hypodermis and longitudinally oriented somatic musculature. The body cuticle is composed of a trilaminated epicuticle, an outer and inner cortical zone, a median zone with globular bodies and a basal zone consisting of three subzones. Massive cuticle in the three zones and an osmiophilic lining is present in the buccal capsule. Armament is absent both from the

[Gnathostomiasis].

Gnathostomiasis is an helminthic zoonotic disease endemic in Asia, mainly in Southeastern Asia, and Latin America, that has been increasingly reported in travelers returning from these areas. It is due to the consumption of raw or insufficiently cooked meat (chiken, snakes), frogs or fish, contaminated with larvae of the gender Gnathostoma. Gnathostomiasis includes a great variety of clinical manifestations caused by cutaneous and/or visceral larva migrans syndrome. We present here parasitological, epidemiological, clinical and therapeutic aspect of the disease.

HOST-SHARING DYNAMICS AT PLAY: FIRST RECORD OF SPIROXYS CONTORTUS IN KINOSTERNON SCORPIOIDES FROM BRAZILIAN AMAZON.

The genus Spiroxys Schneider, 1866 comprises species that commonly parasitize chelonians of the suborder Cryptodira found in the Holarctic and Asian regions. Spiroxys contortus (Rudolphi, 1819) was described as parasitizing a freshwater turtle of the suborder Cryptodira in the Palearctic region and is 1 of the most widely recorded species of the genus worldwide, with records even extending to Brazil. Thus, this study aims to report the first record of S. contortus in Kinosternon scorpioides (Linnaeus, 1766), a cryptodiran freshwater turtle of the family Kinosternidae, from 3 municipalities in

Differential Evolutionary Selection and Natural Evolvability Observed in ALT Proteins of Human Filarial Parasites.

The abundant larval transcript (ALT-2) protein is present in all members of the Filarioidea, and has been reported as a potential candidate antigen for a subunit vaccine against lymphatic filariasis. To assess the potential for vaccine escape or heterologous protection, we examined the evolutionary selection acting on ALT-2. The ratios of nonsynonymous (K(a)) to synonymous (K(s)) mutation frequencies (ω) were calculated for the alt-2 genes of the lymphatic filariasis agents Brugia malayi and Wuchereria bancrofti and the agents of river blindness and African eyeworm disease Onchocerca volvulus
