[Intestinal occlusion due to pancreatitis mimicking stenosing neoplasm of the splenic angle of the colon].

Colonic involvement in patients with severe acute pancreatitis or chronic pancreatitis is common and complications such as paralytic ileus, segmental necrosis and pancreatic-colonic fistulae have been described. However, mechanical occlusion of the colon due to pancreatitis is infrequent. We present the case of a 45-year-old man with occlusion of the colon secondary to asymptomatic pancreatitis mimicking a locally advanced stenosing neoplasm of the splenic angle. Ten years prior to the present episode the patient had presented acute alcoholic pancreatitis complicated by a pseudocyst requiring

Laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy with preservation of the spleen and splenic vessels for benign pancreas neoplasm.

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy to conserve the spleen is a beneficial operation for patients with benign and borderline malignancy in the pancreas. With this procedure, it is very desirable to preserve the splenic artery and vein as well. METHODS: From May 2000 to July 2003, five laparoscopic distal pancreatectomies with preservation of the spleen and splenic vessels were performed for benign pancreas neoplasm at Ewha Womans University Mokdong Hospital in Seoul, Korea. RESULTS: The postoperative pathologic diagnoses were two serous cystadenomas, two mucinous cystadenomas, and

Neoplasms with splenic involvement in dogs at necropsy: Macroscopic presentation patterns in 262 cases.

Splenic neoplasm is frequently diagnosed in dogs and can present as nodules or splenomegaly. This retrospective study aimed to characterize the gross features of splenic neoplasm in dogs at necropsy in order to recognize possible presentation patterns for each diagnosis. In a 10.5-year period, 1,187 dogs underwent necropsy with a confirmed diagnosis of neoplasia, of which 262 had splenic neoplasm. Three dogs had two distinct concurrent tumours, totalling 265 splenic neoplasms. Of these, non-angiogenic tumours were diagnosed in 217 cases (81.9 %) and angiogenic neoplasms were diagnosed in 48 ca

[Malignant Pancreatic Intraductal Papillary Mucinous Neoplasm with Splenic Invasion: A Case Report].

Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN) is a tumor originating from pancreatic ductal epithelial cells, leading to excessive mucus secretion and dilation of the pancreatic duct. Pathologically, IPMNs display a wide range of dysplasia, ranging from low-grade dysplasia to invasive carcinoma. Invasion into surrounding organs, especially into spleen, is rare and has not been reported in Korean journals. Worldwide, only two cases have been reported. Here, the authors report their experience with a rare case of IPMN in the pancreas that invaded the spleen.

Surgical treatment of a colon neoplasm of the splenic flexure: a multicentric study of short-term outcomes.

AIM: The optimal surgical treatment of splenic flexure neoplasm is still not well defined. Extended right hemicolectomy (ERH) and left colic resection (LCR) have been proposed but conclusive evidence concerning postoperative morbidity and oncological results is lacking. The aim of this study was to analyse the short-term outcomes after surgery for splenic flexure cancer with regard to surgical procedure and surgeon's specialty. METHODS: This was a multicentre study on patients who underwent surgery for primary colon cancer of the splenic flexure. RESULTS: From 2004 to 2015, 324 patients fulf

Infections in patients with hematologic neoplasms and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation: neutropenia, humoral, and splenic defects.

Infections are common in patients with hematologic neoplasms and following allogeneic hematopoietic transplantation. Neutropenia and defects in adaptive B-cell-mediated immunity and/or lack of splenic function predispose patients to a host of diverse and often serious infections. It is important to recognize that patients who undergo treatment for hematologic neoplasms may have mixed immune defects, and their vulnerability to infection may continue to change, in part as a reflection of the dynamic developments in the practice of oncology. The main obstacle in providing targeted, evidence-based

[Hemosuccus pancreaticus caused by a ruptured splenic artery aneurysm in an intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm].

An octogenarian male patient who had experienced 2 bleeding episodes in 1 year was hospitalized for melena. During the examination for the obscure gastrointestinal bleeding, a mixed-type intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN) was found, and an endoscopic ultrasound examination revealed a 4-mm splenic artery aneurysm protruding from the same lesion in the pancreatic tail. Distal pancreatectomy was performed, and the pathological diagnosis revealed ruptured blood vessels and blood components within the IPMN. The patient was diagnosed with hemosuccus pancreaticus due to a ruptured splenic

Epithelioid and spindle-cell hemangioendothelioma of the spleen. Report of a distinctive splenic vascular neoplasm of childhood.

A case of a distinctive vascular neoplasm of the spleen in a 3-year-old boy is described. The tumor was characterized histologically by a biphasic growth pattern, with discrete nodular areas composed of atypical round, epithelioid cells with large nuclei and prominent nucleoli, and areas showing an intricate proliferation of vascular channels lined by elongated spindle cells. Immunohistochemical studies showed cytoplasmic staining of the tumor cells with factor VIII-related antigen, Ulex europaeus lectin, and vimentin antibodies. Two cases of splenic neoplasms with differing imaging findings that required laparoscopic resection for a definitive diagnosis.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Splenic tumors are rare and are sometimes found incidentally. In such cases, laboratory tests and imaging studies should be performed based on the diagnostic algorithm to determine whether the tumor is benign or malignant. However, we clinicians sometimes encounter challenging cases. Herein we experienced two challenging cases of splenic tumor which we could not correctly diagnosis preoperatively. CASE PRESENTATION: Case 1: A female in her 80s presented to our surgical department to undergo follow-up examinations for Stage IIIa ascending colon cancer. A follow-up

Evaluation of cytological diagnostic accuracy for canine splenic neoplasms: An investigation in 78 cases using STARD guidelines.

Cytology represents a useful diagnostic tool in the preliminary clinical approach to canine splenic lesions, and may prevent unnecessary splenectomy. However, few studies have evaluated diagnostic accuracy of cytology in the diagnosis of canine splenic neoplasms. The aim of this study was to determine overall accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values (i.e. diagnostic accuracy indexes) of cytology for canine splenic neoplasms following Standards for the Reporting of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies (STARD) guidelines. A consecutive series of canine splenic cytologic

Long-term survivor of giant pancreatic solid pseudopapillary neoplasm with splenic infiltration and lymph node metastasis.

A man in his 70s with a 10 cm abdominal mass in the tail of the pancreas was diagnosed with pancreatic tail cancer. Distal pancreatectomy with curative intent was performed. Since tumour invasion of the spleen and transverse colon was suspected, pancreatectomy with splenectomy, left adrenalectomy and partial transverse colectomy was performed. Pathological examination of the resected specimen showed a giant pancreatic tumour, and a diagnosis of locally invasive solid pseudopapillary neoplasm (SPN) of the pancreas was made. The patient achieved 8-year survival without any recurrences. We herein

A Rare Co-existent Case of Splenic Microfilariasis and Pancreatic Solid Pseudopapillary Epithelial Neoplasm - A Double Jeopardy!

Filariasis is a major public health concern in tropical and subtropical countries like India with Wuchereria bancrofti accounting for 90% of lymphatic filariasis. Rarely observed are extra lymphatic manifestations caused by interaction of immune system with microfilaria and their diffusible products. Among various organs involved, splenic involvement is a rare extra lymphatic manifestation of filariasis and can masquerade clinicoradiologically as metastasis when associated with a known malignancy or as a primary malignancy like lymphoma. Hereby, we present an unusual case of coincidence of spl

The effects of hematopoietic stem cell transplant on splenic extramedullary hematopoiesis in patients with myeloproliferative neoplasm-associated myelofibrosis.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) is the only curative treatment for myeloproliferative neoplasm-associated myelofibrosis (MPN-MF). The main clinical manifestation of MPN-MF is splenomegaly secondary to extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH). The effects of HSCT on splenic EMH and associated vascular and stromal changes are unknown. This study compares the findings seen in spleens following HSCT with those of nontransplanted patients, normal controls, and matched bone marrow (BM) samples. METHODS: This study included three transplanted MPN-MF spleens, three nontransp

Primary vascular neoplasms unique to the spleen: littoral cell angioma and splenic hamartoma diagnosis by fine-needle aspiration biopsy.

We report the fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy diagnosis of two rare cases of primary vascular neoplasms unique to the spleen: a littoral cell angioma from a 31-yr-old Caucasian woman and a splenic hamartoma from a 46-yr-old black man. The cytologic features of splenic hamartoma and of littoral cell angioma of the spleen were described three times in cytologic literature: two were bench-top aspirates and one was FNA biopsy thought to be metastatic carcinoma. To the best of our knowledge, the current two cases were the first diagnosed by FNA biopsy. Our approach to the FNA biopsy diagnosis o
