The impact of ambient aeroallergens on morbidity from childhood asthma is largely unknown. To address this issue, we studied the association between daily emergency department visits for asthma to a children's hospital, and daily concentrations of both pollen grains and fungal spores during a 5-yr period between 1993 and 1997. Air pollution and meteorological data accounted for in the analyses included ozone, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, sulfates, temperature, barometric pressure, and relative humidity. The daily number of asthma visits ranged from 0 to 36 per day with an average of 7.5.

Airborne fungal spores are major constituents of atmospheric bioaerosols that influence environmental exposure, ecosystem processes, and respiratory health. Despite their ecological and public health significance, long-term outdoor monitoring data describing their temporal dynamics and relationships with meteorological conditions remain limited in Southeast Asia. This study provides the first aeromycological assessment of airborne fungal spores in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte, northern Philippines, a coastal region influenced by monsoon climatic conditions. Airborne spore concentrations were monit

Fungal organisms play a major role in the contamination and biodeterioration of natural history museum collections and cultural heritage as a whole, leading to the potential loss of key knowledge preserved by these. As part of the ongoing efforts to study the fungal contaminations observed in the Science Museum of the University of Coimbra (Portugal) collections, eight taxidermized birds were sampled and 27 fungal isolates were retrieved. A comprehensive analysis of these isolates led to the identification of 14 different species belonging to 13 different genera, with Aspergillus accounting fo

In modern large cities, significant harm to human health can be caused by air pollution from fungi. The study examined the degree of biological air pollution in urban environments during 2023-2024 (city of Moscow). Air samples were taken using an aspirator device with the cultivation of fungal colonies on a nutrient medium of two varieties - Chapek medium and PGA medium to establish the concentration of fungal spores in air samples. It was found that the use of the PGA medium is also acceptable for the analysis of air aerosol contamination with fungal spores on a par with the more common Chape

Dead sporulating female fly cadavers infected by the house fly-pathogenic fungus Entomophthora muscae are attractive to healthy male flies, which by their physical inspection may mechanically trigger spore release and by their movement create whirlwind airflows that covers them in infectious conidia. The fungal artillery of E. muscae protrudes outward from the fly cadaver, and consists of a plethora of micrometric stalks that each uses a liquid-based turgor pressure build-up to eject a jet of protoplasm and the initially attached spore. The biophysical processes that regulate the release and r

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), belonging to the phylum Glomeromycota, establish symbiotic associations with approximately 90% of terrestrial plant species and play a key role in nutrient acquisition, tolerance to abiotic stresses, and agroecosystem functioning. Although olive cultivation has expanded in southern Brazil, information on native AMF communities associated with this crop remains scarce. This study characterized the AMF community associated with the rhizosphere of the olive cultivars Arbequina, Coratina, and Picual cultivated in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Soil sampling was cond

Fungi infect humans when environmental spores are inhaled into the lungs. The lung is a heterogeneous organ. Conducting airways, including bronchi and bronchioles, branch until terminating in the alveolar airspace where gas exchange occurs. Infections originating in the bronchioles or alveoli elicit distinct host responses and disease manifestations. Therefore, understanding precisely where spores naturally localize in the lungs, particularly soon after infection, expands opportunities for investigation of host-pathogen interactions. Herein, we detail an in-situ analysis of lungs from mice inf

In the middle of the twentieth century, the from North America sooty bark disease (SBD) of maples was first discovered in England and has spread in the last decades in Central Europe, in particular. The trigger of SBD is the mould fungus Cryptostroma (C.) corticale. The most common infested maple is the sycamore, Acer pseudoplatanus, a common tree in woods and parks. The disease is characterised by peeling of the outer layer of the bark and brownish-black spores under the peeled off bark. These spores can cause maple bark disease (MBD) in humans, a hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) with simila

The human lung is constantly exposed to spores of the environmental mould Aspergillus fumigatus, a major opportunistic pathogen. The spectrum of resultant disease is the outcome of complex host-pathogen interactions, an integrated, quantitative understanding of which lies beyond the ethical and technical reach permitted by animal studies. Here we construct a mathematical model of spore inhalation and clearance by concerted actions of macrophages and neutrophils, and use it to derive a mechanistic understanding of pathogen clearance by the healthy, immunocompetent host. In particular, we invest

Fungal diseases pose significant threats to forestry species such as Tectona grandis (teak), as well as other important forestry and agricultural crops, highlighting the need for early and accurate identification of fungal spores, which serve as primary agents of dissemination and infection. Although Artificial Intelligence (AI) has enabled automated spore recognition, its effectiveness depends on the availability of large, diverse, and well-annotated datasets. However, publicly available datasets targeting fungal taxa associated with commercially valuable timber species remain scarce. To addr

Airborne particulate matter (PM) containing fungal spores and pollen grains was sampled within a monitoring campaign of wheat threshing, plowing and sowing agricultural operations. Fungal spores and pollen grains were detected and identified on morphological basis. No studies were previously available about fungal spore and pollen content in agricultural PM in the Po Valley. Sampling was conducted in a Po Valley farmland in Mezzano (Ferrara, Italy). The organic particles collected were examined by scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer. Fungal spores and pollen

If the cuticle acts as a protective barrier against environmental insults, several pathogens have developed strategies that use it as a way to infect C. elegans. The fungus Drechmeria coniospora produces spores that attach to the cuticle, before hyphae invade the body. Mutants with an altered surface coat, the outermost layer of the cuticle, including bus-2, bus-4, bus-12 and bus-17 show increased adhesion of fungal spores (Rouger et al, 2014; Zugasti et al, 2016). We unexpectedly found that D. coniospora spores attach unusually densely around the mouth of unc-119 mutants. Interestingly, this

Exposure to particulate matter (PM) from agricultural environments has been extensively reported to cause respiratory health concerns in both animals and agricultural workers. Furthermore, PM from agricultural environments, containing fungal spores, has emerged as a significant threat to public health and the environment. Despite its potential toxicity, the impact of fungal spores present in PM from agricultural environments on the lung microbiome and metabolic profile is not well understood. To address this gap in knowledge, we developed a mice model of immunodeficiency using cyclophosphamide

Surfactant protein D (SP-D), a C-type lectin and pattern-recognition soluble factor, plays an important role in immune surveillance to detect and eliminate human pulmonary pathogens. SP-D has been shown to protect against infections with the most ubiquitous airborne fungal pathogen, Aspergillus fumigatus, but the fungal surface component(s) interacting with SP-D is unknown. Here, we show that SP-D binds to melanin pigment on the surface of A. fumigatus dormant spores (conidia). SP-D also exhibited an affinity to two cell-wall polysaccharides of A. fumigatus, galactomannan (GM) and galactosamin

Fungal contamination of surfaces is a global burden, posing a major environmental and public health challenge. A wide variety of antifungal chemical agents are available; however, the side effects of the use of these disinfectants often result in the generation of toxic residues raising major environmental concerns. Herein, atmospheric pressure air plasma generated by a surface barrier discharge (SBD) is presented as an innovative green chemical method for fungal inactivation, with the potential to become an effective replacement for conventional chemical disinfection agents, such as Virkon. Organic pollutants are omnipresent and can penetrate all environmental niches. We evaluated the hypothesis that short-term (acute) exposure to aromatic hydrocarbon pollutants could increase the potential for fungal virulence. Specifically, we analyzed whether pentachlorophenol and triclosan pollution results in the production of airborne fungal spores with greater virulence than those derived from an unpolluted (Control) condition. Each pollutant altered the composition of the community of airborne spores compared to the control, favoring an increase in strains with in vivo infection capacity

Fungi mostly reproduce through spores that are adapted for airborne dispersal; hence, fungal spores (and fungi) are found virtually everywhere. Fungi can be "friends or foes." Our friends include fungi used in the food and biotech industries, fungi that contribute to the cycling of carbon and nutrients, and those involved in the decontamination of polluted soils and/or water, to mention just a few examples. Many species, however, are foes-they are detrimental to plants, animals, and/or humans. Annually, >1.5 million people die due to invasive fungal infections. With the aim of enhancing microb

BACKGROUND: During the grass flowering season, fungal spores are abundant in outdoor air. We tested for co-sensitisations to grass pollen and fungal spores, assessed the degree of co-exposure, and studied its impact on the nasal mycobiome and immune responses.
METHODS: Fungi-specific IgE-levels were studied in 277 individuals with and without grass pollen sensitisation. In a small cohort (n = 7), exposure to grass pollen and fungal spores was monitored during 5 consecutive indoor and outdoor stays in a flowering meadow and correlated with changes in the nasal mycobiome. Cytokines of nasal epi

Fungi in the phylum Ascomycota disperse their sexual spores primarily by forcible discharge from the spore sac, the ascus, in which they develop. These fungi cause some of the most devastating diseases of agricultural crops worldwide. The mechanism of spore discharge is not well understood, despite its primary role in disease spread. Using confocal microscopy, we have elucidated the ascus structure and development as related to function for spore dispersal in Fusarium graminearum, a pathogen of small grains and corn. To determine the mechanism of spore discharge in this species, we examined as
