By means of a questionnaire with a complementary interview and physical examination, the site and nature of sports injuries were investigated over a 10-year period (1977-1987) in 97 elderly athletes (age range 70-81 years). The athletes were still active in training and competition with a mean competition background of 15 years. Of the subjects studied 30 were strength/power athletes and the remaining 67 endurance athletes. Altogether we found 273 sports-related injuries (169 acute and 104 overuse injuries). Of the injuries 75% had occurred in the lower extremities. The most commonly injured p

Sports-related concussion (SRC) is defined as a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) leading to complex impairment(s) in neurological function with many seemingly hidden or difficult to measure impairments that can deteriorate rapidly without any prior indication. Growing numbers of SRCs in professional and amateur contact sports have prompted closer dialog regarding player safety and welfare. Greater emphasis on awareness and education has improved SRC management, but also highlighted the difficulties of diagnosing SRC in a timely manner, particularly during matches or immediately after competi

The role of the sports dentist has evolved particularly over the past 15 years. The traditional role of dealing with dental trauma in the dental surgery environment has now been extended to include working with the sports medicine specialists at sporting events, looking into the prevention or sporting dental trauma, regular screening, looking at nutrition and having an educational role with the athletes and wider sporting family. The risk of dental diseases amongst elite athletes has been shown to be higher than the normal population. Therefore, the sports dentist needs to be able to advise th

More than three decades have passed since the German Society for Orthopaedics and Traumatology published its first recommendations on sports participation for scoliosis patients. During this period, surgical techniques have changed more substantially than non-surgical procedures. Confidence in modern pedicle screw constructs for posterior spinal correction and fusion has led to an earlier and more extensive return to sporting activities after corrective surgery, whereas the theoretically plausible advantage of newer, mobility-preserving procedures has not yet been sufficiently proven. At least

Sports-related concussions (SRC) have been a topic of interest for decades and are a prevalent risk of sports participation. The definition of SRC continues to evolve but includes a plausible mechanism and associated symptoms of injury. Rates of concussion vary among sports, and many sports have adopted rule changes to limit this risk for its athletes. There has been a considerable effort to prevent the occurrence of SRC, as well as a focus on safe return to learn and sport alike. There is growing concern about the ramifications of concussions, which will continue to warrant further investigat

Pediatric foot and ankle fractures are common in athletic participation. Treatment of pediatric sports trauma must take into account the unique challenges this population presents, and aim to minimize long-term complications. Given the excellent remodeling potential of pediatric bone, conservative treatment can often be used. However, a thorough understanding of physeal anatomy, fracture patterns, and biomechanics is needed to guide treatment choice and determine when surgical intervention is warranted.

Sports-related concussion is a common injury in organized and recreational sports. Collision and contact sports are higher risk activities. Female athletes may be at more risk of concussion compared with male athletes; however, more research is needed. Evaluation of concussion involves assessments of multiple domains or clinical profiles, including vestibular, ocular, headache, cognitive, mood, fatigue, and other systems. Initial management consists of a short rest period followed by increasing activity that does not exacerbate symptoms. Cognitive modifications for school or work also are init

BACKGROUND: Task-specific dystonia (TSD) is a form of focal dystonia that occurs in the context of the performance of selective, highly skilled, often repetitive, motor activity. TSD may be apparent during certain tasks such as writing, playing musical instruments, or other activities requiring fine motor control, but may also occur during certain sports, and maybe detrimental to professional athletes' careers. Therefore, sports physicians and movement disorder neurologists need to be aware of the presentation and phenomenology of sports-related dystonia (SRD), the topic of this review.

Pediatric sports injuries are becoming more prevalent as children participate in sports. This has resulted in more imaging of pediatric injuries. The growing skeleton has features that result in unique injury patterns and radiologic findings. The article discusses the special features of bones including the growth plate, apophyses, cortex, and periosteum. Pediatric-specific sports injuries and conditions in the most common joints are then reviewed including the elbow, hip, and knee. The imaging appearances of these entities will be described with a multimodality approach including radiographs,

Concussion, a peculiar type of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), is an injury frequently encountered in various contact and noncontact sports, such as boxing, martial arts, American football, rugby, soccer, ice hockey, horse riding, and alpine skiing. Concussion occurs anytime external forces of specific intensities provoke acceleration-deceleration of the brain, and it is characterized by the rapid onset of short-lived impairment of neurologic functions, spontaneously resolving within weeks, persisting for longer times only in a small percentage of cases. A wide range of molecular alteratio

Sports-related encephalopathies are a growing concern among athletes who have experienced head trauma. Anxiety is heightened for the public and especially among parents of children playing contact sports. The most common neuropsychological conditions are concussions and traumatic encephalopathies. Concussions result from brain traumas that can be asymptomatic, but more serious concussions can include loss of consciousness, neurological abnormalities, and/or posttraumatic amnesias. Repetitive concussions lead to persistent brain pathology, known as chronic traumatic encephalopathies. This gradu

When we consider the health and welfare of our children, few issues are of more concern than the risk and consequences of head trauma in sports. From participation in male-dominated football and hockey to girls soccer and softball, repeated impacts to the head that do not produce recognized concussion is the cutting edge of sports head injury research. Our author, a leading researcher in this field, provides the latest on what we know and don't know on this relatively new frontier of neuroscience.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Participation in sports improves general health but increases the risk of osteoarthritis. This review analyzes the relationships among increased joint use, joint injuries, and injury-induced joint degeneration that causes posttraumatic osteoarthritis. The purpose is to help people who participate in sports minimize their risk of joint degeneration.
RECENT FINDINGS: Participation in sports that cause minimal joint impact and torsional loading by people with normal joints and neuromuscular function may cause osteophyte formation, but it has minimal, if any, effect on the risk

Knuckle pads, first described by Garrod in 1893, 1 are benign, asymptomatic, well- circumscribed, smooth, firm, skin colored papules, nodules, or plaques. They most commonly occur on the dorsal aspect of the proximal interphalangeal joint of the finger, 2 but also may occur on the dorsal aspects of the foot over joints. 3-5 Knuckle pads may be inherited or acquired. 1 While some authors suggest that trauma is not a significant factor, 6 acquired knuckle pads have been associated with repetitive friction and trauma, 2,7 and may resemble athlete's nodules (also referred to as collagenomas). 1 Hi

Doping consists in the use of artificial means or substances with the unique aim of improving performance despite adverse effects on health. Amphetamines stimulate the central nervous system by increasing motivation and vigilance. Often consumed in association with analgesics, they increase the fatigue threshold during prolonged or repeated exercise. Addiction and dependency to these substances are extremely rapid. Side-effects include insomnia, exhaustion, violence and can lead to serious heart diseases. By enhancing capacity for intensive training, anabolic steroids improve strength, alertne

Sports are often practised nowadays in balance for a non challenging profession or as means to counteract stressful life style. This desirable and reasonable development calls however for a critical assessment of biomechanical factors contributing to stress and admissible load of the human locomotor system. Considerate training renders excessive strain of the skeleton, cartilage and vertebral column virtually impossible. In view of the time required for adaptive processes this statement has to be combined with an appeal for appropriate training to those seeking compensation in physical exercis

Childrens' injuries are often trivial, but this should not lead to complacency as the spectrum of possible problems is different from that in adults. Moreover, their examination is much more difficult and clinicians must be thorough so as not to miss concurrent pathology.

With the high interest in fitness and sporting activities at present, all primary care physicians must be prepared to treat emergencies in sports medicine. Basic knowledge, reference material, equipment, and supplies are mandatory (see Tables 1 and 2). Unique situations may require additional items.
