BACKGROUND: Snow sports are a popular recreational activity; however, the incidence of injury of snow sports can be high for skiers and snowboarders. Our hospital receives severe trauma cases from snow resorts and hospitals throughout the region. This study aimed to determine whether the risk of snow sports-related major trauma that requires emergency surgery under general anesthesia varies by the equipment and injury mechanism.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included patients with snow sports trauma referred to Gifu University Hospital, Japan between November 2010 and March 2020. W

INTRODUCTION: Sports injuries account for substantial morbidity and medical cost. To direct intervention, a population-based study of the causes and types of sports injuries was undertaken.
METHOD: An injury surveillance system was established at all trauma center hospitals that treat residents 10 to 19 years old in the District of Columbia and the Chief Medical Examiner's Office. Medical record abstractions were completed for those seen in an emergency department, admitted to the hospital, or who died from injury June 1996 through June 1998.
FINDINGS: Seventeen percent (n = 2563) of all inj

Peripheral nerve injuries due to sports are relatively rare but the exact incidence is not known due to a lack of epidemiological studies. Particular sports activities tend to cause certain peripheral nerve injuries including direct acute compression or stretching, repetitive compression and stretching over time, or another mechanism such as ischemia or laceration. These nerve lesions may be severe and delay or preclude the athlete's return to sports, especially in cases with delayed diagnosis. Repetitive and vigorous use or overuse makes the athlete vulnerable to disorders of the peripheral n

Due to the potential for catastrophic neurotraumas and cervical spine injuries in sport, the sports health care professional must take proper measures to prevent such injuries. Strength training of the cervical spine, teaching of proper sporting techniques, and use of protective sports equipment are three primary means of attempting to prevent neurotraumas and cervical spine injuries in sports. There are other avenues to assist in preventing these injuries, such as flexibility programs. The sports health care professional, therefore, must be knowledgeable of the needs of each individual athlet

OBJECTIVE: Handgrip strength may differ depending on the type of sport played during the developmental period. Youth sports in which athletes hold equipment in their hands may be the most effective for improving handgrip strength. This study aimed to examine the age at which differences in handgrip strength appear by comparing sports that involve gripping (kendo) with those that do not involve gripping (soccer) in young athletes.
METHODS: Two hundred and twenty-two male athletes (115 kendo and 107 soccer) between 6 and 15 years old participated in this study. Handgrip strength was measured us

Male genital trauma is a rare but potentially serious sports injury. Although such an injury can occur by many different mechanisms, including falls, collisions, straddle injuries, kicks, and equipment malfunction, the clinical presentation is typically homogeneous, characterized by pain and swelling. Almost all sports-related male genital injury comes from blunt force trauma, with involvement of scrotal structures far more common than penile structures. Most injuries can be treated conservatively, but catastrophic testicular injury must first be ruled out. Despite being relatively uncommon co

The American Contact Dermatitis Society chose acetophenone azine (AA) as the 2021 Allergen of the Year. Acetophenone azine is an emerging contact allergen that often is associated with the use of sports equipment and footwear. The pattern of dermatitis initially starts locally at the site of contact but can develop into a generalized dermatitis. Strong suspicion is necessary to diagnose AA allergy, and patch testing should be completed with AA and to potentially relevant sports equipment and/or shoes. Acetophenone azine is not yet available as a commercial patch-test preparation, but the optim

Although the benefits of practicing sports are unquestionable, it can contribute to the spread of skin diseases. Mechanical trauma, exposure to environmental and infectious agents, and contact with the skin of other athletes increase the chances of getting an infection. In contact sports, skin infections are responsible for up to 20% of lost training and competition time. In the USA, skin infections, with an incidence of 8.5-20.9%, are the 2nd cause (following upper respiratory infections) of all medical consultations among young wrestlers. The high morbidity of skin diseases poses a great cha

In retail stores, workers are constantly exposed to new manufactured goods. The issue of the exposure of retail workers to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) should clearly be considered. Therefore, this study provides data regarding VOC concentrations in ten French retail stores. The stores were chosen to represent various products: sports goods, shoes and leather, furniture, car equipment, bazaars, online-sales storage, clothes, books, DIY (do-it-yourself), and household appliances. VOCs and aldehydes were actively sampled on the same day in five to seven locations per building and outdoors.

The purpose of this study was to examine the incidence and mechanisms of acute injuries in the sport of fistball. No scientific studies on injury characteristics have yet been conducted in this traditional sport game. The study was conducted prospectively over the course of 12 months. During a total of 40.308 h of sport-specific exposure, 240 players reported 492 injuries, representing an overall injury rate of 12.2 injuries/1000 h of exposure. Most injuries were classified as bagatelle injuries (67.8%). The majority of the injuries were located in the knee (23.5%) followed by the elbow (11.9%

With associated snow sports injury risks being well documented, the scope for preventative medicine is clear. This article focuses on potential precautions taken by skiers/snowboarders and how they vary between different snow sport groups. A total of 181 randomly selected individuals from the Whistler/Blackcomb Medical Centre, Canada, took part in this questionnaire-based cohort study, examining snow sports activity, preventive measures, and protective equipment use. Most individuals were ski area residents of advanced expertise, with 50% having had a previous snow-riding injury. The most comm

This survey searched for allergic skin reactions associated with, and possibly resulting from, sporting or recreational activities. The goal was to develop profiles of the types of allergens and responses that might be expected in association with particular sports involvement. The data mainly derive from published reports of allergic-appearing skin responses occurring during and after sports participation. The majority of these are single or short series of cases. Some supplementary data from earlier reviews, and two cases from our own clinical experience, have also been incorporated. Given t

BACKGROUND: In the United States, most school-aged children participate in some form of organized sports. Despite the advantages to social and physical development that organized sports may have, these activities also place a significant number of America's youth at risk for facial injuries. Pediatric facial fractures resulting from sports trauma are well documented within pediatric literature. Despite knowledge of the importance of safety equipment, there is a continued need for increased awareness about fracture patterns resulting from sports injuries to develop better strategies for their p

The incidence of injury related to various sports is reviewed according to sport, area of injury, number of participants and hours per week spent at the sport. Organized sports accounted for fewer injuries than unsupervised recreational activities like tree climbing, skateboarding and running. The knee is the most commonly injured site. Sensitivity to patients' commitment to their sport is necessary: sometimes instead of rest, they can substitute a less hazardous form of exercise. Principles of prevention involve proper familiarity with the sport, proper equipment and proper conditioning.

Elite performance in Olympic winter sports depends on the interplay among the athlete, equipment, and the snow or ice. This naturally evolves with temperature, humidity, wind, preparation, and contact between the equipment and its surface. Together, these factors continuously rebalance the forces of gravity, aerodynamic drag, and friction, requiring athletes, coaches, and organizers to adapt technique, equipment, and surface management, e.g., snow grooming and salting, ice resurfacing or pebbling, and rink climate control. This narrative review (SANRA-guided) synthesizes the scientific literat
