Substantiation of spouse and child maltreatment reports as a function of referral source and maltreatment type.

Substantiation rates for alleged incidents of spouse (N = 33,787) and child (N = 31,986) maltreatment reported to the U.S. Air Force (AF) Family Advocacy Program between 2000 and 2007 were examined. For spouse maltreatment, physical abuse and multiple forms of maltreatment were most likely to be substantiated and neglect was least likely to be substantiated. For child maltreatment, emotional abuse was most likely to be substantiated and physical abuse was least likely to be substantiated. Substantiation rates were higher for referrals by military professionals than for referrals by civilian pr

Domestic abuse in a central Mediterranean pregnant population.

The Mediterranean region is generally characterized by a patriarchal society that generally predisposes towards a higher prevalence of spouse abuse. The prevalence of domestic spouse abuse in a central Mediterranean closed island community was assessed to approximate 11.7% of the pregnant population. The abuse varied from psychological to physical abuse. There was a strong history of experience of domestic violence/abuse during childhood in both the victim and perpetrator suggesting that a "circle of abuse" may play a role in some cases. The socio-biological characteristics of the victim did n

Fatal neglect of the elderly by a spouse: a case report.

Neglect is one of the most common forms of elder abuse, along with physical and psychological abuse. It is defined as an elderly person alone who is not able to provide for him or herself the services necessary to maintain physical and mental health, or who is not receiving those services from a responsible carer. We present an unusual case of neglect where a 69-year-old diabetic man was left lying on the ground by his spouse after a sudden fall from a cerebral stroke. The man was not able to move or to get up and his spouse, unable to lift him up, did not seek help. Although the victim's spou

[Specific features of spouse alcoholism].

The paper aims at specifying the update topology of spouse alcoholism. The results of the study, including 85 alcohol addict couples (both husband and wife), show that spouse alcoholism can be divided into the following types in relation to the initial time of alcohol abuse: the early type when both mates had already developed alcohol drinking behavior before the marriage and genuine late type, when alcohol addiction was formed after the marriage. The genuine spouse alcoholism can be further subdivided into depressive, neurotic and codependent types. It can be noted that prognosis of spouse al

Elder abuse.

Family physicians need to know the predisposing factors for elder abuse, which may be as common as child abuse and spouse abuse. Victims and abusers often seek assistance through medical services. Neglect is probably the most common form of elder abuse, followed by emotional or verbal abuse and abandonment. Physical abuse is relatively rare. Intervention strategies should include not only the victim but also the abuser.

Childhood Exposure to Family Violence and Adult Trauma Symptoms: The Importance of Social Support from a Spouse.

This study examines the roles of both positive and negative social support from a spouse as potential moderators of associations between experiences of physical abuse and exposure to intimate partner violence (IPV) as a child and adult trauma symptoms. We hypothesized that positive social support received from a spouse would have a buffering effect on trauma symptoms, while negative social support from a spouse would have a potentiating effect. Participants were 193 newlywed couples (total N = 386) randomly recruited from a marriage license database. Participants completed self-report question

Men's recognition of violence against women and spousal abuse: comparison of three groups of men.

Our goal was to assess whether men in the following three groups differ in their ability to recognize and judge the severity of diverse forms of aggressive behavior: (a) men who reported being physically aggressive toward their spouses and who were entering treatment for domestic violence; (b) men who, after participating in a treatment program, were no longer physically violent; and (c) men who reported never having been physically violent towards their spouses (NPV group-non-physically violent). All 81 men in the study reported being verbally aggressive toward their spouses. Men who had been

Dependent personality disorder and physical abuse.

The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that the likelihood of physical spousal abuse is increased in dependent personality disorder (DPD) compared to other personality disorders. The sample consisted of 305 subjects consecutively admitted to an outpatient department of legal medicine for physical abuse. Using the Structured Clinical Interview for Disorders, screen questionnaire (SCID-II-SQ), the subjects were divided into three groups: without personality disorders (WPD, N=108), with non-dependent personality disorders (NDPD, N=179) and with DPDs (DPD, N=18). First,, the three groups

Violence against Women: An Exploration of the Physical and Mental Health Trends among Immigrant and Refugee Women in Canada.

Violence against women is a serious health and social problem for women worldwide. Researchers have investigated the broad physical and mental health consequences of violence against women but few have focused on immigrant and refugee women. We assessed the history of violence and the impairment of physical and mental health among 60 women participants from the Iranian and Sri Lankan Tamil communities in Toronto, Canada. Our survey findings revealed that the participants had experienced various types of violence throughout their lifespan, with psychological abuse by a spouse/partner occurring

Spouse similarity for lifetime psychiatric history in the general population.

BACKGROUND: Most studies of spouse similarity for psychiatric disorders have focused on clinical samples and are thus limited by selection bias. This study is, to our knowledge, the first comprehensive investigation of spouse similarity for lifetime psychiatric history in a general population sample using standardized diagnostic criteria. METHODS: We studied 519 pairs of spouses residing in Edmonton, Canada who completed the Diagnostic Interview Schedule psychiatric interview. In each pair, one spouse belonged to a random subsample of persons who had participated in a large population survey

Utilization of counseling and supportive services by female victims of domestic abuse.

Increasing attention to the high prevalence of domestic violence (DV) and its impact on women's physical and mental health has resulted in expanded services for abused women. Abused women appear to underutilize the formal counseling services available in many communities, however, and further research is needed to identify factors related to service utilization. In the present study, 1,746 women assaulted by a male intimate partner were identified from a larger pool of women interviewed by Pretrial Services following the arrest of their spouse/partner on domestic abuse charges. The women were

Risk factors of suicidal ideation and attempt in women with drug user spouses.

BACKGROUND: Despite ample evidence of the presence of mental and psychological disorders observed in the family members of drug users, few studies have attempted to focus on suicidal behavior in women whose spouses are drug users. METHODS: This cross-sectional study focused on 131 women who had a drug user spouse. They had all been married for >2 years, with no mental or psychological disorders and no history of drug use prior to marriage. Drug use history after marriage, the extent and nature of physical and non-physical wife abuse, and any history of suicidal ideation and attempt in the pas

More assortative mating in US compared to European parents and spouses of patients with bipolar disorder: implications for psychiatric illness in the offspring.

The effect of assortative mating on offspring is often not considered. Here, we present data on illness in the spouse and the parents of patients with bipolar disorder as they affect illness in the offspring. A history of psychiatric illness (depression, bipolar disorder, suicide attempt, alcohol abuse, drug abuse, and "other" illness) was elicited for the parents, spouse, and the offspring of 968 patients with bipolar disorder (540 of whom had children) who gave informed consent for participation in a treatment outcome network. Assortative mating for a mood disorder in the spouse and parents

Prevalence of domestic violence in community practice and rate of physician inquiry.

BACKGROUND: National surveys show that each year in the United States approximately 2 million women are battered by their husbands. Only a small percentage of these women are identified by physicians. The objective of this research was to determine the incidence and prevalence of spouse abuse among women seeking health care in a family practice clinic (or setting). METHODS: During a two-month period, all adult women seeking health care from a family practice clinic in a medium-sized Midwestern community were asked to complete an anonymous questionnaire about whether they had ever been physica

Physical and nonphysical partner abuse and other risk factors for low birth weight among full term and preterm babies: a multiethnic case-control study.

This study sought to determine the risk of low birth weight from intimate partner abuse. The case-control design was used in a purposively ethnically stratified multisite sample of 1,004 women interviewed during the 72 hours after delivery between 1991 and 1996. Abuse was determined by the Index of Spouse Abuse and a modification of the Abuse Assessment Screen. Separate analyses were conducted for 252 full term and 326 preterm infants. The final multiple logistic regression models were constructed to determine relative risk for low birth weight after controlling for other complications of preg
