We report a case in which pyelolithotomy through a mini-pararectal incision was performed in a patient with right staghorn calculi for whom it was difficult to perform PNL/ECIRS. A 76-year-old woman with right staghorn calculi (60×30×30 mm; total stone volume, 51.29 ml) was admitted to our hospital. The patient had undergone left pelvic bone resection and left external iliac arteriovenous graft replacement for left pelvic osteosarcoma 25 years prior and subsequently required anticoagulant therapy. Anticoagulants were suspended, and heparin and the antibiotics were administered intravenously fo

Malignant fibrous histiocytomas (MFH) as primary renal tumours are rare, with less than 50 cases described in the literature. We report a case of primary renal MFH of giant cell type in a 56-year-old man, who presented with bilateral dull flank pain, intermittent gross haematuria and body weight loss (6 kg in 3 months). Intravenous urography, computerized tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance image (MRI) showed right ureteral stones with mild hydronephrosis, and a solid mass at the lower pole of the left kidney associated with staghorn calculi, as well as tumour thrombi in the left renal vein

PURPOSE: We evaluate the efficacy and parenchymal consequences of extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) for staghorn calculi in children.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: From 1991 to 1999, 16 young patients 5.5 months to 2 years old and 7 older children 6 to 11 years old were treated for complete (6) or partial (17) staghorn calculi. Infection was the main factor of lithogenesis, particularly in younger children. In 21 patients the stone burden was more than 20 mm. All patients were treated under general anesthesia using a 14 kV. Sonolith 3000 (14) or a 12 to 20 kV. Nova (9) lithotriptor. In 5

We reviewed 43 patients with staghorn calculi to determine the effectiveness of various treatment modalities such as extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) monotherapy, ESWL and percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) combined therapy, and open stone surgery. While ESWL monotherapy and ESWL+PCNL were performed in 25 and 8 patients, respectively, 10 patients underwent open stone surgery. Of the 25 patients treated with ESWL, 8 were stone-free, whereas 4 out of 8 patients treated with ESWL+PCNL and 8 out of 10 patients treated with open surgery were stone-free. The complications of ESWL monoth

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) for staghorn calculi is one of the more challenging endourologic procedures. Although excellent stone-free rates are universally reported in the literature, complication rates vary widely, especially related to the need for blood transfusion. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the outcomes of PCNL for patients with staghorn calculi in a large series of patients at a single, tertiary referral, endourologic stone center.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between July 1990 and December 2005, 1338 patients underwent PCNL for renal stone disea

A bifid ureter is an atypical anatomical variation that occurs with an incidence of 1-10%. This anomaly is in a continuum of duplex collecting systems and most commonly involves a common distal ureter. This is usually asymptomatic and is predominantly an incidental diagnosis, nevertheless, is a potential risk factor for urolithiasis formation. Current surgical management of larger staghorn calculi favours percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) over traditional open surgery, however for multiple calculi and complex anatomy PCNL would require multiple punctures, with increased risk of bleeding, ple

A rare case of bilateral renal tumor with benign clinical evolution, associated with staghorn calculosis and skin cancer, is reported. Delayed operative treatment was due to difficulties in establishing the diagnosis, controversial results of the sonographic and X-ray examination and lack of cooperation by the patients. The right kidney and regional lymph nodes were removed; metastases were verified on histologic examination of the lymph nodes. After the operation the patient received complex radio-, chemo- and hormonal therapy. Basocellular skin cancer which later developed was cured by conta

BACKGROUND: Ureteric calculi are usually small and solitary. The term giant has been applied to ureteric calculi that aremore than five cms in length and/or 50g or more in weight. These are uncommon and may present with few or no urological symptoms and might be ignored or be missed.
OBJECTIVE: To present a rare case of a giant left ureteric calculus associated with an ipsilateral staghorn calculus.
METHODS: A 31-year-old Nigerian male presented with recurrent left abdominal pain, dysuria, urinary frequency, and fever which had been on for 10 years. Patient was clinically evaluated. He had pl

UNLABELLED: We present a child with cerebral palsy, treated for renal and ureteral staghorn calculi. Calculosis was associated with neurogenic voiding dysfunction.
CASE REPORT: A 10 year boy was admitted to Pediatric Surgery Clinic in Poznań because of urolithiasis. In neurologic examination four-extremities spastic paresis and convergent strabismus was found. Intellectual contact with this child was very poor. Constant urine leakage from urethra was observed. In urine analysis pH < 7, leucocytes and erythrocytes, in urine culture Proteus vulgaris > 10(5). Ultrasonography revealed three stagh

We report a case of a staghorn stone containing ammonium acid urate that was effectively treated with drug therapy alone. A 46-year-old man had recurring urinary tract stones. He had no previous episode of urinary tract stones that required hospitalization and operation. He received only drug therapy for hyperuricemia in another hospital. Ultrasonography and computed tomography revealed a left staghorn stone measuring 37×34 mm. The kidney-ureter-bladder radiograph did not show any stones. His urine was acidic, and we estimated that the left staghorn stone consisted of urate. Oral administratio

We report on a 79-year-old woman with staghorn calculi who presented with severe hypercalcemia. She was later found to have humoral hypercalcemia of malignancy caused by a rare tumor, squamous cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis. Chronic irritation, infection and inflammation from staghorn stones cause squamous metaplasia, leading to squamous cell carcinoma of the renal collecting system. The prognosis is very poor, with a 5-year survival rate of <10%. This case highlights the importance of awareness of a very rare and aggressive carcinoma in a patient with long-standing nephrolithiasis.

In the 17 years up to 1979 189 kidneys have had an extended pyelolithotomy for staghorn calculus and have been followed up. In only 1 of 96 unilateral cases did a stone form in a normal contralateral kidney, whatever the outcome of surgery on the affected side. Seven early nephrectomies were performed for non-function and in 6 bilateral cases, with advanced renal failure, surgery did not arrest the loss of renal function. Regrowth of stone occurred in 43 cases (complete staghorns in 24). Regrowth did not occur in 18 of 20 incompletely cleared kidneys nor in 22 of 41 with persistent infection.

INTRODUCTION: This study evaluates our initial experience with miniaturized percutaneous nephrolithotomy (mini-PCNL) in Vietnamese patients with staghorn calculi, using an 18F metal access sheath. This technique addresses the challenges of complex kidney stone management in resource-limited settings.
METHODS: A multi-center retrospective review of 236 patients with staghorn calculi who underwent mini-PCNL with high-power Ho laser lithotripsy (Lumenis 100 W) was conducted at four provincial hospitals in northern Vietnam from January 2020 to December 2023.
RESULTS: Among the 236 patients (mean

INTRODUCTION: Pancreatolithiasis is an uncommon disease and the diagnosis of pancreatic duct stones is challenging. The radiological findings of pancreatic duct stones may mimic other diseases, such as renal stones.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 42-year-old male came with chief complaint of recurrent bilateral flank pain accompanied by fever which worsen 7 days before admission. The patient was diagnosed as gastritis and received analgesics in several hospitals. Ultrasonography and IVP examinations showed stones in both kidneys. CT-scan was not performed due to limitation in the hospital. Patient was

In Italy a national Plan for the surveillance of imported and autochthonous human vector-borne diseases (chikungunya, dengue, Zika virus disease and West Nile virus (WNV) disease) that integrates human and veterinary (animals and vectors) surveillance, is issued and revised annually according with the observed epidemiological changes. Here we describe results of the WNV integrated veterinary and human surveillance systems in Italy from 2008 to 2015. A real time data exchange protocol is in place between the surveillance systems to rapidly identify occurrence of human and animal cases and to de

BACKGROUND: Primary squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the kidney is an extremely rare malignancy, usually originating from the renal pelvis due to continuous irritation from infections and nephrolithiasis. However, it can also arise from parenchyma. It has rarely been reported in the literature. Renal squamous cell carcinoma often presents late with nonspecific symptoms such as flank pain and hematuria. It is typically linked to kidney stones, and because of its nonspecific clinical symptoms and radiological characteristics, patients often seek medical attention only in the advanced stages of t

PURPOSE: Upper urinary tract calculi that are too large to treat with extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy are most commonly cleared with percutaneous endoscopic techniques. In a select group of patients who were poor candidates for percutaneous nephrostolithotomy we used retrograde endoscopic lithotripsy, and define the safety and efficacy of this modality in treating large, noninfectious stone burdens (2 cm. or greater).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 51 patients with 66 large (2 cm. or greater) upper urinary tract stones were chosen for retrograde ureteroscopic surgery. Many of these p

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate a supracostal approach for percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) of staghorn calculi through a prospective study and review of previously reported cases.
METHODS: From June 2009 to November 2011, 40 patients with staghorn calculi were scheduled for supracostal S-PCNL in a prospective study. Of the 40 renal units, 16 (40%) had a complete staghorn and 24 (60%) had a partial staghorn calculus. Perioperative complications were stratified according to the modified Clavien system. Univariate and multiple logistic regression analyses were used to determine statistically signifi
