Cognitive functioning in Lesch-Nyhan syndrome: a 4-year follow-up study.

Lesch-Nyhan syndrome (LNS) is a rare disorder of metabolism caused by a defective gene on the X chromosome. It is typically characterized by choreoathetosis, hypertonia, hyperreflexia, and self-mutilation. The present study is a 4-year follow-up investigation of the cognitive status of six subjects with a mean age of 17 years 10 months (range 14 years 9 months to 23 years). The Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale: IV was used. Each of the four domains assessed by this battery (verbal reasoning, abstract/visual reasoning, quantitative, and short-term memory) was compared with previous findings of

Cognitive development and behaviour in very low birthweight twins at four years.

This study included two groups of 37 children, one of twins and the other singletons at 4 years of age. All subjects has birthweights under 1500 grams and individuals in the groups were matched for birth date, gender and birthweight. Except when parental socio-economic status was taken into account, no significant differences between twins and singletons were observed on any of the results of The Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale, nor were there any when the twins and singletons were divided into groups with birthweights < 1000 grams and 1000 to 1499 grams. When cognitive scores were analysed

[Effects of iodine nutritional status of fetuses, infants and young children on their intelligence development in the areas with iodine-deficiency disorders].

Intelligence in children without iodine supplement during their fetal and infant periods, and in those born three to four years after the implementation of stable supply of iodized salt in the areas with endemic cretinism and goiter was tested with Standord-Binet method. Results indicated there existed a lot of mental retarded children in the iodine-deficiency areas, with most of them born before the implementation of iodine supplement. In order to study the changes of intelligence development in children probably induced by stable supply with iodine, the tested children living in the areas wi

Neurodevelopmental outcome of infants with viral meningitis in the first three months of life.

We prospectively evaluated the neurodevelopmental outcome of infants with documented viral meningitis to determine (1) whether deficits in physical growth, development, speech and language, hearing, or intelligence occur; and (2) if so, at what age these deficits can be detected. Sixteen infants with documented enteroviral meningitis under the age of 90 days and a control group of 13 patients matched for age, race, sex, and socioeconomic status were followed up prospectively for 3 years with annual evaluations, which included a developmental evaluation by a pediatric developmentalist, articula

Correlation of echoencephalographic findings and neurodevelopmental outcome: intracranial hemorrhage and ventriculomegaly in infants of birth weight 1,000 grams or less.

Echoencephalograms were obtained for 118 of 121 successive infants who were admitted to the Stanford intensive care nursery, weighed 1,000 g or less at birth, and survived long enough for at least one study to be performed. Eighty-eight of these infants survived and were followed up for 1 to 3 years; psychometric testing (Bayley Scales of Infant Development, Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale, or both) was performed on 81% of these infants. Subependymal-intraventricular hemorrhages or intraparenchymal hemorrhages were associated with impaired development, but ventriculomegaly was not. The absen

Evaluating working memory outcome measures for children with Down syndrome.

BACKGROUND: There is a critical need for the psychometric evaluation of outcome measures to be used in clinical trials targeting cognition in Down syndrome (DS). This study examines a specific cognitive skill that is of particular importance in DS, working memory, and the psychometric properties of a set of standardised measurements to assess working memory in individuals with DS. METHODS: Ninety children and adolescents ages 6 to 18 years old with DS were assessed on a selection of verbal and visuospatial working memory subtests of standardised clinical assessments at two time points to exam

Early predictors of neurodevelopmental outcome of very low-birthweight infants at three years.

Seventy-nine premature infants weighting less than 1501 g at birth but appropriate for gestational age underwent a neurodevelopmental examination at one, three, six, nine and 12 months post-term, and a standard neurological examination and the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale at three to four years of age. Children were classified as normal, suspect or abnormal on the three-year neurological examination, on the IQ test, and on composite neurodevelopmental outcome at age three years. Results showed that items from both the nine- and 12-month neurodevelopmental examinations correctly classified

Psychiatric diagnosis in persons with intellectual disability in India.

BACKGROUND: This study examines the rate of psychiatric diagnosis as per ICD-10 and Reiss Screen for Maladaptive Behaviours (RSMB), and distribution of psychiatric diagnosis with regard to the severity of intellectual disability (ID). It also explores the degree of agreement between Reiss screen and clinical diagnosis (ICD-10) in relation to dual diagnosis. METHODS: In this study Intelligence (IQ) and Social Quotient (SQ) were estimated on Indian adaptation of Binet's scale and Vineland Social Maturity Scales, respectively, in 60 consecutive persons with ID. Both ICD-10 and RSMB were used ind

Correlations between antepartum maternal metabolism and intelligence of offspring.

BACKGROUND: It is not clear to what extent maternal metabolism during pregnancy affects the cognitive and behavioral function of the offspring by altering brain development in utero. To investigate this question, we correlated measures of metabolism in pregnant diabetic and nondiabetic women with the intellectual development of their offspring. METHODS: The study included 223 pregnant women and their singleton offspring: 89 women had diabetes before pregnancy (pregestational diabetes mellitus), 99 had the onset of diabetes during pregnancy (gestational diabetes mellitus), and 35 had normal ca

The outcome in children with congenital cytomegalovirus infection. A longitudinal follow-up study.

Infants with congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection were identified through urine cultures of 15,212 consecutive neonates and studied prospectively to determine whether their neurodevelopmental and audiologic status was different from that of matched uninfected control subjects. Of 64 children with congenital CMV infection, three died, 11 could not be located for follow-up, one had quadriplegic cerebral palsy, and seven had varying degrees of sensorineural hearing loss. All matched control subjects were normal neurologically, and none of them had sensorineural hearing impairment. The Stanf

Repair of ventricular septal defect in the first two years of life using profound hypothermia-circulatory arrest techniques.

Ventricular septal defect repair had been performed in 57 infants ages 21 days to 21 months and under 10 kg in weight using profound hypothermia-circulatory arrest technics. Severe congestive heart failure was the indication for operation in all but two infants under 6 months of age, and in those under 3 months there was usually an associated moderate or large sized atrial septal defect or patent ductus arteriosus or a coarctation. In infants over 6 months controlled heart failure was accompanied by failure to thrive and often recurrent respiratory infections. The main indication for surgery i

Effect of otitis media on development: a community-based study.

Otitis media history until age 3 years were recorded for 233 children as part of the surveillance in a Community Program for Promotion of Growth and Development (PROD) conducted in a western neighborhood of Jerusalem. Recurrent otitis media (6 or more episodes) occurred more frequently among children who were of North African or Asian origin, of lower social class and maternal education, and whose duration of breast feeding was less than 26 weeks. Children with recurrent otitis media also failed the 7-month hearing test more frequently than other children. The mean Developmental Quotient score

Preschool outcome of less than 801-gram preterm infants compared with full-term siblings.

OBJECTIVE: Extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants are at greater risk for neurodevelopmental delay than full-term infants. Outcomes may be compromised secondary to abnormal brain development associated with complications of prematurity. Long-term cognitive outcome has also been reported to be significantly influenced by postnatal factors. The objective of this study was to clarify the effects of prematurity separate from environmental factors on growth and neurodevelopmental outcomes by comparing ELBW children with their full-term siblings. METHODS: The study consisted of 25 ELBW children,

A total of 371 newborn infants falling into 3 groups, non-haemolytic jaundice, haemolytic jaundice, and non-jaundiced controls, have been reassessed in the 6th year of life as regards neurological, audiological, and psychological function. Neurological handicap was concentrated among the infants of low birth weight and was not related to jaundice, apart from one case of athetoid cerebral palsy with deafness. No other cases of perceptive deafness were discovered. Intelligence testing on the Stanford Binet scale showed no relation between depth of jaundice and I.Q.These findings support the majo
