Staphylococcus haemolyticus is a rare cause of bacterial meningitis and most commonly occurs as a nosocomial infection in patients' post-neurosurgery. We report a patient post-allogenic stem cell transplant, with no prior history of neurosurgical procedures, who developed S. haemolyticus meningitis and bacteremia following central catheter-related bloodstream infection. The patient failed therapy with vancomycin and daptomycin but was successfully treated with a prolonged course of linezolid. We review the pharmacological management of coagulase negative Staphylococcus (CoNS) meningitis, with

The fish gut microbiota includes bacterial and microeukaryotic microorganisms that contribute to host nutrition, immune regulation, and intestinal homeostasis. However, the simultaneous responses of both microbial fractions to bacterial infection remain poorly explored in aquaculture species. This study evaluated intestinal microbiota differences associated with experimental Staphylococcus haemolyticus infection in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Juvenile female tilapia were randomly assigned to either a non-infected control group or a group experimentally infected with S. haemolyticus.

Staphylococcus haemolyticus is an important zoonotic pathogen. The objective of this study was to investigate the pathogenicity of a Staphylococcus haemolyticus isolated from the blood of Elaphurus davidianus and evaluate its potential risks to public health. A combination of methods including 16S rRNA sequencing, PCR, antimicrobial susceptibility testing and mouse challenge assay was employed to systematically investigate its phylogenetic relationships, growth characteristics, virulence and antimicrobial resistance genes, LD₅₀, and antimicrobial resistance profile. The results indicated that

Staphylococcus haemolyticus is an important cause of sepsis in preterm infants, with gut colonization being recognized as a risk factor for infection. To better understand the diversity of S. haemolyticus among preterm infants, we generated genome sequences of S. haemolyticus strains (n = 140) from 44 stool samples of 22 preterm infants from four hospitals in England. Core genome phylogenetic analyses, incorporating 126 publicly available S. haemolyticus genome sequences, showed that 85/140 (60.1%) of the isolates, from three different hospitals, formed a clonal group with 78/85 (91.7%) strain

Staphylococcus haemolyticus (S. haemolyticus), which is highly prevent in the hospital environment, is an etiological factor for nosocomial infections. Point-of-care rapid testing (POCT) of S. haemolyticus is not possible with the currently used detection methods. Recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) is a novel isothermal amplification technology with high sensitivity and specificity. The combination of RPA and lateral flow strips (LFS) can achieve rapid pathogen detection, enabling POCT. This study developed an RPA-LFS methodology using a specific probe/primer pair to identify S. haemol

Staphylococcus haemolyticus is the most common organism among clinical isolatesof methicillin-resistant staphylococci. Aim: This study evaluated the ability to produce biofilm with the presence of the antibiotics (1/4 minimum inhibitory concentrations) of S. haemolyticus strains isolated from blood culture. Methods: Clonal distribution was assessed in pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. PCR assays were performed to detect mecA, icaA, aap, atlE, atl, fbp genes. S. haemolyticus strains grown in the presence of the antibiotics were investigated for biofilm formation on glass, polystyrene and cathet

Staphylococcus haemolyticus is an emerging multidrug-resistant nosocomial pathogen noted for robust biofilm formation and complex restriction-modification (RM) systems that hinder genetic manipulation. These barriers have severely limited mechanistic studies into its pathogenesis and immune evasion. Here, we report the development of a molecular toolbox that enables precise genomic engineering of clinical S. haemolyticus isolates. Using PacBio Single-Molecule Real-Time and bisulfite sequencing, we defined the complete genomes and methylomes of nine isolates, generating a functional readout of

Postsurgical device-related meningitis caused by multidrug-resistant coagulase-negative staphylococci often complicates the treatment options. We report a rare and, to our knowledge, the first clinical case report of drain-associated meningitis caused by methicillin- and linezolid-resistant Staphylococcus haemolyticus following linezolid therapy in a vancomycin-hypersensitive patient subsequently treated with cotrimoxazole, resulting in clinical improvement. The molecular mechanisms responsible for linezolid resistance were found to be the presence of G2576T mutation in domain V of 23srRNA reg

Staphylococcus haemolyticus is a skin commensal gaining increased attention as an emerging pathogen of nosocomial infections. However, knowledge about the transition from a commensal to an invasive lifestyle remains sparse and there is a paucity of studies comparing pathogenicity traits between commensal and clinical isolates. In this study, we used a pan-genomic approach to identify factors important for infection and hospital adaptation by exploring the genomic variability of 123 clinical isolates and 46 commensal S. haemolyticus isolates. Phylogenetic reconstruction grouped the 169 isolates

Staphylococcus haemolyticus is the second, most frequently isolated coagulase-negative staphyloccus (CoNS) from patients with hospital-acquired infections, and it is usually resistant to methicillin and other semisynthetic penicillins. The purpose of this study was to characterize staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec) elements and assess the in-vitro activity of antibiotics against 60 S. haemolyticus strains recovered from hospitalized patients. All these strains expressed methicillin resistance and carried a mecA gene. Moreover, all strains possessed a multiresistant phenotype, i.e.

Background/Objectives:Staphylococcus haemolyticus is a common skin commensal that has emerged as a multidrug-resistant nosocomial pathogen, with sequence type 42 frequently implicated in clinical settings. The genetic basis of fusidic acid (FA) resistance mediated by mutations in elongation factor-G (fusA/EF-G) has not been systematically characterized in S. haemolyticus. Methods: Five representative FA-susceptible S. haemolyticus isolates were selected. In vitro FA resistance was induced by incubating each isolate on Mueller-Hinton agar containing 4 µg/mL FA at 37 °C for 48 h. Resistant colon

Staphylococcus haemolyticus (S. haemolyticus) is a Gram-positive, facultative anaerobic bacterium emerging as a significant nosocomial pathogen, particularly in neonatal intensive care units. It primarily affects immunocompromised individuals and exhibits high levels of antibiotic resistance among coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS), underscores its global public health relevance. Advances in sequencing technologies have provided genomic insights into its pathogenicity, including biofilm formation and secretion of virulence factors. The organism is implicated in device-associated meningiti

Quorum sensing is often proposed as a target for antivirulence drug development against bacterial pathogens. Coagulase-negative staphylococci are leading causes of nosocomial blood infections and associated mortality. However, there is a severe lack of understanding how virulence and quorum sensing affect coagulase-negative staphylococcal sepsis. We show that the Agr quorum-sensing system has a strong impact on mortality from experimental sepsis caused by the exemplary coagulase-negative staphylococcal species Staphylococcus haemolyticus. This was based on strict Agr regulation of phenol-solub

This study aimed to determine the presence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), SCCmec elements and genetic relatedness among Staphylococcus haemolyticus isolated from patients with a variety of eye infections (n=11) and from healthy conjunctiva (n=7). Minimum inhibitory concentrations were determined for 14 antimicrobials according to BSAC guidelines. PCR was used to identify the presence of mecA, mecC, SCCmec type and ARGs. Sequencing was used to determine mutations in gyrA, gyrB, topoisomerase IVA and IVB genes. Genetic relatedness was determined by PFGE. Of the 18 isolates, 17 showed res

BACKGROUND: Among coagulase-negative staphylococci, Staphylococcus haemolyticus is the second most frequently isolated species from human blood cultures and has the highest level of antimicrobial resistance. This species has zoonotic character and is prevalent both in humans and animals. Recent studies have indicated that methicillin-resistant S. haemolyticus (MRSH) is one of the most frequent isolated Staphylococcus species among neonates in intensive care units. The aim of this study was to determine the presence of MRSH in different groups of companion animals and to characterize isolates a

Staphylococcus haemolyticus is a multidrug-resistant opportunistic pathogen and a major reservoir of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes within the Staphylococcaceae family. Its high genomic plasticity, frequent association with mobile genetic elements (MGEs), and prevalence in clinical settings underscore its relevance as both a threat and a conduit for resistance dissemination. In this study, we performed a comprehensive pan-genomic analysis of the S. haemolyticus defensome - including restriction-modification (RM), abortive infection (Abi), and CRISPR-Cas systems - across 692 high-quality

In this short letter of correspondence, we provide our specialist interpretation of what has been described in a previously published case report. We argue that this case describes a patient with chronic, undertreated male genital lichen sclerosus. If left unchecked, as in this case, lichen sclerosus can cause permanent architectural changes and damage to the affected tissues, and can thus predisposes to secondary infections, including bacterial, such as with Staphylococcus haemolyticus.

Staphylococcus lugdunensis and Staphylococcus haemolyticus are unique among CoNS in that the former often causes aggressive disease, while the latter consistently exhibits high rates of multidrug resistance. We evaluated the in vitro susceptibility of contemporary (2012-2013) isolates from both pathogens to tedizolid and comparators, using standard methodology. Results were interpreted using CLSI and EUCAST breakpoints. Overall, 106 S. lugdunensis and 103 S. haemolyticus isolates were collected from 51 medical centers in the United States and 30 centers in 18 European countries. Tedizolid show
