Endovascular stent-associated infection with Staphylococcus lugdunensis.

An elderly woman presented febrile 5 days after stenting of multiple coronary arteries. Echocardiography showed a thickening of the aortic root, raising the possibility of stent infection. Four  of four blood culture bottles grew Staphylococcus lugdunensis and repeat echo showed an aortic root abscess. Despite appropriate antibiotic treatment, the patient died. A 24-year-old man with a ventricular septal defect presented febrile 4 weeks after stenting of an aortic coarctation. Initial transoesophageal echo found no vegetations around the stent or elsewhere. Four of six blood culture bottles gr

Progressive Staphylococcus lugdunensis endocarditis despite antibiotic treatment.

A 68-year old man with fever chills and a diastolic murmur was diagnosed with aortic-valve endocarditis caused by coagulase-negative Staphylococcus lugdunensis. The clinical condition initially improved with antibiotic therapy. On day seven, transoesophageal echocardiography revealed large abscesses extending from the aortic root to the left ventricular wall. Emergency cardiac surgery was performed successfully and a stentless bioprosthetic valve was inserted. S. lugdunensis endocarditis is known for its aggressive clinical course with valve destruction, abscess formation and embolic complicat

Staphylococcus lugdunensis: the coagulase-negative staphylococcus you don't want to ignore.

Staphylococcus lugdunensis is a virulent coagulase-negative staphylococcus (CoNS) that behaves like Staphylococcus aureus. Toxic shock syndrome, osteomyelitis, septic arthritis and postoperative endopthalmitis have been observed. Endocarditis complicated by heart failure, periannular abscess formation and embolic phenomenon have brought particular attention to this CoNS. Mortality rates for endocarditis appear higher when compared with other CoNS. Owing to the laboratory methods used, identification may be misleading. β-lactam antimicrobials are recommended pending sensitivities. Evaluation fo

Treatment of a Staphylococcus lugdunensis cervical epidural abscess.

First reported in 1988, Staphylococcus lugdunensis is a virulent coagulase-negative Staphylococcus species often associated with endocarditis. This is the first case report describing this infection in the cervical spine. A 58-year-old, left-handed Caucasian woman with no significant medical history presented with neck and left arm pain. Neurological examination revealed mild left deltoid 4/5 weakness and myelopathy. She was found to have an epidural cervical spinal cord mass that was causing severe cord compression and underwent partial anterior cervical decompression of the mass. On entering

Staphylococcus lugdunensis Endophthalmitis: Case Series and Literature Review.

Staphylococcus lugdunensis endophthalmitis is an uncommon intraocular infection with potentially visually devastating consequences. S. lugdunensis endophthalmitis have been reported following cataract surgery, trauma, intravitreal injections of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor agents and dexamethasone implant. We report four cases of postoperative S. lugdunensis endophthalmitis after cataract extraction (three patients) and combined pars plana vitrectomy and cataract extraction (one patient). The onset of presentation of endophthalmitis was acute (within 2 weeks) in two patients, subacu

Staphylococcus lugdunensis: antimicrobial susceptibility and optimal treatment options.

Staphylococcus lugdunensis is a coagulase-negative staphylococcus (CoNS) with unusual pathogenicity resembling that of S. aureus. Unlike other CoNS, S. lugdunensis remains susceptible to most antibiotics. The resistance to penicillin varies widely (range, 15-87% worldwide), whereas methicillin resistance is still rare. We aimed to evaluate treatment options for infections caused by S. lugdunensis and more specifically to investigate whether penicillin G could be a better treatment choice than oxacillin. Susceptibility testing was performed using the disc diffusion method for penicillin G, cefo

Staphylococcus lugdunensis endocarditis with isolated tricuspid valve involvement.

Staphylococcus lugdunensis is often misidentified as S aureus and as a rare cause of infective endocarditis. The clinical course of S lugdunensis endocarditis is aggressive and the mortality rate is high in contrast to S epidermidis endocarditis. Most reported cases of S lugdunensis endocarditis have involved mitral or aortic valves. Herein, we present a case with isolated tricuspid endocarditis due to S lugdunensis.

The Deadly Contaminant: A Case of Staphylococcus lugdunensis Endocarditis.

The incidence of infective endocarditis (IE) has been on the rise since it was first reported a century ago, and the associated mortality remains unchanged despite advances in medical and surgical management. To diagnose IE, the modified Duke criteria are used, which rely on isolating the causative organism. However, this can be challenging if the micro-organism is considered a contaminant. Staphylococcus lugdunensis (SL) is one such organism. In this case, an elderly female presented with intermittent chest pain, palpitation, and diaphoresis, for which she underwent left heart catheterization

Staphylococcus lugdunensis: Review of Epidemiology, Complications, and Treatment.

Staphylococcus lugdunensis is a species of coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) that induces a variety of infectious diseases, including skin and soft tissue infection (SSTI), infective endocarditis (IE), and bone and PJI. This review article underscores the important points in the literature about S. lugdunensis infections, including its epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment, as well as specific types of infections it can cause. Anatomical and age-related distributions of S. lugdunensis SSTIs have been noted, though they most commonly occur as abscesses. S. lugdunensis can also manifest as

Acute lymphadenitis with cellulitis caused by Staphylococcus lugdunensis.

Although coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) have been considered part of the resident flora on the human skin, Staphylococcus lugdunensis is an unusually virulent CNS and can cause many types of infection. We report a rare case of acute lymphadenitis with cellulitis in the right infraauricular region caused by S. lugdunensis. A 62-yr-old woman visited the Department of Otolaryngology of Busan Paik university hospital. She had a palpable mass and swelling in the right infraauricular region and complained of aggressive pain and a febrile sensation in the region for 5 days. On the suspicion o

Staphylococcus lugdunensis--a potential pathogen in oral infection.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the pathogenicity of Staphylococcus lugdunensis in acute oral infection. STUDY DESIGN: S. lugdunensis was isolated from patients with acute oral infections and from healthy control subjects. Antibiotic susceptibility, in vitro cellular toxicity, in vivo virulence, and hemolytic activity testing and dot blot analysis were performed. The statistical significance of in vitro cellular toxicity was determined by means of analysis of variance. RESULTS: Isolated from the infected patients, S. lugdunensis showed resistance to penicillin, ampici

Septic Embolic Stroke Resulting From Staphylococcus lugdunensis Endocarditis.

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus lugdunensis, a member of the coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS), has been recognized as a causal organism for infective endocarditis since the 1980s. Although most CoNS have an insidious and chronic nature, they are involved in a variety of systemic infections. S lugdunensis infective endocarditis is a rare entity but is as catastrophic as Staphylococcus aureus infective endocarditis and requires aggressive antibiotic therapy and, typically, valve replacement. S lugdunensis infective endocarditis-induced septic embolic cerebrovascular accident has rarely been re

Staphylococcus lugdunensis infective endocarditis: a multicentre international observational study.

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus lugdunensis (SL) can cause infective endocarditis (IE), with unusually high complication and mortality rates. According to the 2023 Duke-ISCVID criteria, blood cultures positive for SL now count as a major microbiological criterion. OBJECTIVES: Our aim was to determine the contemporary characteristics of SLIE, and to identify the factors associated with all-cause in-hospital mortality. METHODS: Patients with definite SLIE between 2010 and 2024 were included in a collaborative study involving 17 centres in France, Spain, Brazil, Italy, and Ireland. RESULTS: We coll
