Eighty-seven Staphylococcus saprophyticus strains isolated from urine of 87 patients with cystitis were examined in 2005-2009. All strains were tested for resistance to vancomycin, nitrofurantoin, doxycycline, oxacillin, amoxicillin/clavulanate, cefoxitin and sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim and for biofilm formation by a modified Christensen method. None of the tested strains of S. saprophyticus showed resistance to vancomycin, while 2 strains (2.3 %) were resistant to nitrofurantoin, 9 (10.3%) to doxycycline, 20 (23.0 %) to oxacillin, 6 (6.9%) to amoxicillin/clavulanate, 6 (6.9%) to cefoxitin a

Epidemiological and clinical aspects of 270 episodes of urinary tract infection caused by Staphylococcus saprophyticus were studied. The cases were randomly selected and matched consecutively with 276 others of urinary tract infection according to sex, age and temporal occurrence. Such infections were found typically among young women in the outpatient health service. They were common among professionals handling meat products and were especially associated with prior outdoor swimming. Common symptoms of inflammation of the lower urinary tract, haematuria and pyuria were seen more often among

The purpose of this study was to establish a porcine model of urinary tract infection (UTI) with gram-positive uropathogens. Ten female domestic pigs were experimentally inoculated with human UTI isolates of Enterococcus faecalis (n = 3), Staphylococcus saprophyticus (n = 3), or Staphylococcus aureus (n = 4) and followed with regular urine samples. Bladders and kidneys were aseptically removed at termination (5-7 days post infection) and assessed by gross pathology and bacterial enumeration. Enterococcus faecalis (n = 3 of 3) and S. aureus (n = 2 of 4) successfully colonized the pig bladders.

T-2 toxin, a mycotoxin that frequently causes hidden contamination in food and animal feed, poses a substantial threat to both human and animal health. Staphylococcus saprophyticus (S. saprophyticus) is an opportunistic pathogen that widely infects humans and various animals. However, the specific conditions under which it becomes pathogenic, as well as the mechanisms underlying its pathogenicity remain unknown. In this study, it is found that a sub-cytotoxic dose of T-2 toxin in piglet and mouse models promotes the proliferation of intestinal S. saprophyticus and facilitates its translocation

OBJECTIVES: Staphylococcus saprophyticus (S. saprophyticus) is the second most common bacteria causing uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs). It is considered non-susceptible to mecillinam, with no defined breakpoint and only few available minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) observations. However, this consideration does not correlate with clinical outcome. With this study, we aimed to provide a comprehensive MIC distribution analysis of mecillinam for S. saprophyticus, which could be useful for determining potential breakpoints.
METHODS: We studied 112 isolates of S. saprophyticus

Staphylococcus saprophyticus is a uropathogenic bacteria responsible for acute urinary tract infections (UTIs) mainly in young female patients. Patients suffering from urinary catheterization, pregnant patients, the elderly as well as those with nosocomial UTIs are at greater risk of the colonizing S. saprophyticus infection. The causative factors include benign prostatic hyperplasia, indwelling catheter, neurogenic bladder, pregnancy, and history of frequent UTIs. Recent findings have exhibited that S. saprophyticus is resistant to several antimicrobial agents. Moreover, there is a global con

Staphylococcus saprophyticus is one of the main pathogens of cystitis in young women. The human biotopes are contaminated by the staphylococcus on direct contacts with domestic animals or after using not properly cooked food of animal origin. Young women are more susceptible to colonization of the urinary tract by S. saprophyticus vs. the other contingents. Sexual intercourse is conducive to the colonization and infection. Shifts in the urinary tract microflora due to the use of spermicide, as well as candidiasis promote colonization of the urinary tract by S. saprophyticus. At present fluoroq

The frequency of Staphylococcus saprophyticus, formerly Micrococcus subgroup 3, as the cause of bacteriuria is reported. Of 787 consecutive female outpatients with signs of bacteriuria, 173 (22.0%) yielded S. saprophyticus, predominantly in pure culture and in high counts. In the age group 16--25 years, this organism was demonstrated in no less than 42.3%. In hospitalized women and in men with signs of bacteriuria, on the other hand, S. saprophyticus was a rare finding (0.9% and 0.5%, respectively). The figures in female outpatients aged 15--30 years were similar over a three-year period, but

Staphylococcus saprophyticus is a Gram-positive coccus responsible for the occurrence of cystitis in sexually active, young females. While effective antibiotics against this organism exist, resistant strains are on the rise. Therefore, prevention via vaccines appears to be a viable solution to address this problem. In comparison to traditional techniques of vaccine design, computationally aided vaccine development demonstrates marked specificity, efficiency, stability, and safety. In the present study, a novel, multi-epitope vaccine construct was developed against S. saprophyticus by targeting

Staphylococcus saprophyticus is a gram-positive commensal characteristically resistant to novobiocin. Clinically, it is associated with urinary tract and other opportunistic infections. But reports on phages against them are scanty, which underlines the importance of the study. We isolated a Staphylococcus saprophyticus strain from soiled socks. The strain was characterised through biochemical tests and 16S rDNA ribotyping. Furthermore, the antibiogram revealed that the strain is resistant to penicillinase-resistant beta-lactam antibiotics. A double-stranded DNA temperate phage, ØPh_SS01, was

The marine environment is increasingly impacted by anthropogenic activities. The use of bioindicator organisms, such as sponges, allows for the rapid detection of these impacts on marine environmental quality. This study aimed to isolate, identify, and characterize cultivable bacterial strains associated with the sponge Aplysina fulva, whose individuals were healthy or diseased. Eight individuals of A. fulva were collected in Arraial do Cabo, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A total of 165 bacterial strains were isolated, of which 142 were identified by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. Notably, Staphylococ

Culture-independent studies have identified DNA of bacterial pathogens in the gallbladder under pathological conditions, yet reports on the isolation of corresponding live bacteria are rare. Thus, it is unclear which pathogens, or pathogen communities, can colonize the gallbladder and cause disease. Using light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, culture techniques, phylogenetic analysis, urease assays and Western blotting, we investigated the presence of live bacterial communities in the gallbladder of a cholecystitis patient after cholecystectomy. 16S rRNA gene sequencing of isolated b

A 61-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with 2-day history of malaise and dyspnea. He had mitral prolapse and type II diabetes mellitus with neurogenic bladder, which was cared for by catheterization on his own. On arrival the patient was in septic condition with hypoxemia, and physical examination revealed systolic murmur at the apex. Transthoracic echocardiography revealed vegetation of the mitral and the aortic valve. The presence of continuous bacteremia was confirmed by multiple sets of blood culture, whereby gram-positive cocci was retrieved and identified as Staphylococcus saprop

With antimicrobial resistance (AMR) posing a major global threat, largely driven by antibiotic overuse, the search for alternative antimicrobial strategies has become increasingly urgent. Bacteriocins, due to their specificity and limited impact on host microbiota, are gaining attention as viable substitutes. Here, we report the identification and characterization of a novel bacteriocin produced by Staphylococcus saprophyticus P1CEA4, a strain isolated from meat-producing pigs. This strain exhibited potent direct and extracellular antimicrobial activity. Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) enabled t
