Cytoplasmic flows in starfish oocytes are fully determined by cortical contractions.

Cytoplasmic flows are an ubiquitous feature of biological systems, in particular in large cells, such as oocytes and eggs in early animal development. Here we show that cytoplasmic flows in starfish oocytes, which can be imaged well with transmission light microscopy, are fully determined by the cortical dynamics during surface contraction waves. We first show that the dynamics of the oocyte surface is highly symmetric around the animal-vegetal axis. We then mathematically solve the Stokes equation for flows inside a deforming sphere using the measured surface displacements as boundary conditi

Methyl donor for 1-methyladenine biosynthesis in starfish ovarian follicle cells.

1-Methyladenine (1-MeAde), the oocyte maturation-inducing substance of starfish, is produced by ovarian follicle cells upon stimulation with a gonad-stimulating substance (GSS) released from radial nerves. It has been reported that a process of methylation is involved in GSS-induced 1-MeAde production by starfish ovarian follicle cells. The present study sought to identify a possible methyl donor for 1-MeAde biosynthesis in follicle cells of the starfish Asterina pectinifera. When isolated follicle cells were incubated with [methyl-(14)C]methionine (Met), there was an increase in the level of

An Ambidextrous STarfish-Inspired Exploration and Reconnaissance Robot (The ASTER-bot).

As more roboticists are turning to Nature for design inspiration, it is becoming increasingly apparent that multisystem-level investigations of biological processes can frequently lead to unexpected advances in the development of experimental research platforms. Inspired by these efforts, we present here a holistic approach to developing an autonomous starfish-inspired soft robot that embodies a number of key design, fabrication, and actuation principles. These key concepts include integrated and sequentially deployable magnetic tube feet for site-specific and reversible substrate attachment,

Sensory Biology of Starfish-With Emphasis on Recent Discoveries in their Visual Ecology.

Asteroidea, starfish, constitutes a major part of the macrobenthos in most marine environments. Being members of the echinoderms, they have a nervous system with no well-defined central nervous system. Accordingly, starfish are assumed to pick up rather limited information from the surroundings, and it is also often assumed that most of their behaviors are guided by olfaction. Here, the sensory biology of starfish is reviewed in order to evaluate these assumptions. There is a vast amount of behavioral data dealing with mechanoreception, chemoreception, and combinations of the two (chemosensory

Adrenomedullin-like immunoreactivity in the nervous system of the starfish Marthasterias glacialis.

The nervous system of the starfish Marthasterias glacialis was investigated immunocytochemically using an antiserum specific for adrenomedullin (AM), a new regulatory peptide. Immunoreactivity was only found in nerves of the basiepithelial plexus of cardiac and pyloric stomachs and pyloric caeca, while the radial nerve cords and the other digestive organs were negative. The strongest AM-like immunoreactivity was located in the current-producing areas of the cardiac stomach. The distribution of this peptide suggests different functions in echinoderms involving regulation of muscle movement and

Wound repair during arm regeneration in the red starfish Echinaster sepositus.

Starfish can regenerate entire arms following their loss by both autotomic and traumatic amputation. Although the overall regenerative process has been studied several times in different asteroid species, there is still a considerable gap of knowledge as far as the detailed aspects of the repair phase at tissue and cellular level are concerned, particularly in post-traumatic regeneration. The present work is focused on the arm regeneration model in the Mediterranean red starfish Echinaster sepositus; to describe the early cellular mechanisms of arm regeneration following traumatic amputation,

Absence of 1-Methyladenine Production in Follicle Cells Obtained from Starfish Ovaries in the Post-Spawning Season: (starfish follicle celis/1-MeAde/GSS/cAMP/post-spawning season).

Follicle cells from the ovaries of starfish Asterina pectinifera collected in the breeding season and then kept in an aquarium for three months did not produce 1-methyladenine (1-MeAde) in response to genad-stimulating substance (GSS). The cyclic AMP content of follicle cells of the ovaries was much lower in the post-spawning season than in the spawning season. In the post-spawning season, the cyclic AMP level was increased slightly by GSS, but nor insufficiently for production of 1-MeAde. Addition of 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine, a potent phosphodiesterase inhibitor, stimulated the productions

Carotenoids from Starfish Patiria pectinifera: Therapeutic Activity in Models of Inflammatory Diseases.

The carotenoids mixture (MC) isolated from the starfish Patiria. pectinifera contains more than 50% astaxanthin, 4-6% each zeaxanthine and lutein, and less pharmacologically active components such as free fatty acids and their glycerides. Astaxanthin, the major component of MC, belongs to the xanthophyll class of carotenoids, and is well known for its antioxidant properties. In this work, in vitro and in vivo studies on the biological activity of MC were carried out. The complex was shown to exhibit anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic and cancer-preventive activity, without any toxicity at a dose

Coelomic Transport and Clearance of Durable Foreign Bodies by Starfish (Asterias rubens).

Echinoderms have excellent healing and regeneration abilities, but little is known about how they deal with the related challenge of durable foreign bodies that become lodged within their bodies. Here we report a novel mechanism for foreign body elimination in starfish. When injected into the arm of a starfish, passive integrated transponder tags and magnets of similar dimensions are eliminated at a rate approximating 10% per day. These objects are forcefully ejected through the body wall at the distal tip of an arm. Ultrasound images reveal that foreign bodies are moved within the body cavity

Anaphylactic shock caused by sting of crown-of-thorns starfish (Acanthaster planci).

A 40s-year-old woman with previous history of injury due to contact with crown-of-thorns starfish, Acanthaster planci, was stung on the right middle finger. After immediately losing consciousness, she died 13 h after injury despite intensive medical treatment. Examination of the respiratory system revealed narrowing due to severe edema of the laryngopharynx, as well as alveolar hemorrhage, eosinophilic infiltration, and extensive neutrophil and eosinophil aggregation in the intravascular lumen of the lungs. Examination of the liver revealed severe diffuse hepatocellular necrosis and extremely

Liver damage by the crown-of-thorns starfish (Acanthaster planci) lethal factor.

Upon autopsy of mice injected with the crown-of-thorns starfish (Acanthaster planci) lethal factor, a change in color of the liver, swelling of the gall bladder and jaundice were observed. After administration of the lethal factor into mice, activities of glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT), glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), acid phosphatase (ACP) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) were significantly elevated in serum. Hepatic ALP also increased markedly but hepatic GOT, GPT and ACP showed a tendency to decrease. Activity of hepatic LDH first decreased and then

Dendritic translation and neuroproteasome-mediated degradation of endogenous tau revealed by STARFISH.

In Alzheimer's disease, the protein tau is thought to redistribute from axons to the somatodendritic compartment and form fibrillar aggregates. Although tau aggregation is a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease, the dynamics of its synthesis and degradation are not well characterized. Given that nascent polypeptides are particularly susceptible to misfolding, local control of tau synthesis and degradation may be essential to prevent aggregation. Here we develop STARFISH, a method for visualizing the subcellular site of endogenous mRNA translation in primary neurons and in vivo with single-molecule

The Crown-of-Thorns Starfish: From Coral Reef Plague to Model System.

Acanthaster planci, commonly known as the "crown-of-thorns starfish" (COTS) are famous for decimating coral reefs, yet the unique features of the COTS genome make the starfish a useful system for genomic and evolutionary developmental research. The COTS genome assembly is an order of magnitude more highly contiguous than other recently sequenced echinoderm genome assemblies. The high resolution of the COTS assembly is likely related to low heterozygosity resulting from historical population dynamics and possibly a recent population expansion. The high-resolution genome assembly is biologically

Coronary artery fistula ligation in a child with use of the Starfish Heart Positioner.

The Starfish Heart Positioner aids off-pump coronary artery surgery in adult patients by providing posterior cardiac exposure without incurring hemodynamic instability. Herein, we describe its use in a 17-month-old girl who had a right coronary artery fistula that drained to the right ventricle. Use of the device enabled exposure that afforded closure of the fistula without cardiopulmonary bypass. The patient was discharged from the hospital 2 days postoperatively. Six weeks later, she was well, and echocardiography showed no residual fistulous flow.

Isolation and characteristics of trypsin from pyloric ceca of the starfish Asterina pectinifera.

Trypsin was purified from pyloric ceca of the starfish Asterina Pectinifera by ammonium sulfate precipitation, gel filtration, and cation-exchange chromatography. Final enzyme preparation was nearly homogeneous in sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and its molecular weight was estimated as approximately 28000. Optimum pH and temperature of A. pectinifera trypsin for hydrolysis of N(alpha)-p-Tosyl-L-arginine methyl ester hydrochloride were approximately pH 8.0 and 55 degrees C, respectively. A. pectinifera trypsin was unstable at above 50 degrees C and below pH 5.0, and w

Partial purification and properties of phospholipase A2 from the starfish, Asterina pectinifera.

1. Phospholipase A2 (phosphatide 2-acyl-hydrolase, EC 3.1.1.4) activity was shown to occur in the supernatant fraction of a freshly prepared homogenate from the pyloric caecum of starfish (Asterina pectinifera). 2. The phospholipase A2 has been isolated and purified 130-fold by ultracentrifugation, ammonium sulfate precipitation and column chromatographic procedures. 3. The purified enzyme was stable to heat at low pH values and the optimal pH was observed at approximately 9.0. 4. The enzyme activity was activated by Ca2+ and sodium deoxycholate, and was inhibited by EDTA.

Multiobjective starfish optimization algorithm for engineering design and optimal power flow problems.

This paper presents a robust multi-objective optimization approach—the multi-objective starfish optimization algorithm (MOSFOA)—designed to address complex challenges in engineering design and optimal power flow analysis. As an advanced extension of the starfish optimization algorithm (SFOA), MOSFOA leverages biological inspiration from starfish behaviors such as exploration, predation, and regeneration to balance global exploration and local exploitation. The proposed MOSFOA employs elitist non-dominated sorting (NDS) and crowding distance (CD) mechanisms to preserve solution diversity and gu

Culcinoside E, a new sulfated steroidal biglycoside from the starfish Culcita novaeguineae.

Using various chromatographic separations, six steroid glycoside derivatives, including one new compound named culcinoside E (1), were isolated from the methanol extract of the starfish Culcita novaeguineae. Their structures were confirmed by detailed analysis of the 1D, 2D NMR, and HR ESI QTOF mass spectra. Among isolated compounds, culcinoside E (1), diplasterioside A (5), and thornasteroside A (6) inhibited growth of Enterococcus faecalis, whereas culcitoside C1 (3) was active on Candida albicans.

Comparative analysis of nitric oxide and SALMFamide neuropeptides as general muscle relaxants in starfish.

Previous studies have established that the gaseous signalling molecule nitric oxide (NO) and the SALMFamide neuropeptides S1 and S2 cause cardiac stomach relaxation in the starfish Asterias rubens. Here we show that S1, S2 and the NO donor SNAP also cause relaxation of two other preparations from Asterias - tube feet and the apical muscle of the body wall. The rank order of effectiveness as muscle relaxants when tested at a concentration of 10 micro mol l(-1) was SNAP>S2>S1 for both tube feet and apical muscle whereas for cardiac stomach it was S2>S1>SNAP.
