PURPOSE: Studies are limited on sensory outcome in children with brachial plexus birth injury (BPBI). The purpose of this research was to evaluate the sensory function of the hand in children with BPBI who had microsurgical reconstruction of the brachial plexus.
METHODS: The sensory thresholds of children with upper and total plexus injury were evaluated with the Weinstein Enhanced Sensory Test and a test of stereognosis.
RESULTS: A total of 63 children participated (aged 10.92 ± 3.29 years), 24 (38%) of whom had abnormal sensory thresholds in the affected hand. Only 4 children had loss of p

Studies on the recognition of objects or shapes explored by a hand or finger have concentrated on the relative merits of different methods of exploration--in particular, whether the exploring hand or finger is moved by the subject himself (active), is guided by an assistant (passive), or remains stationary with the shape being moved by an assistant (tactile). These factors, together with another variable--the size of the explored shape--were investigated in twelve normal adults whose task, without the aid of vision, was to explore and identify various shapes with the tip of the extended right

Hand function was evaluated in 105 patients who had been operated on in early infancy for brachial plexus birth palsy. The mean follow-up after surgery was for 13.4 years (5.0 to 31.5). Fine sensation, stereognosis, grip and pinch strength and the Raimondi scale were recorded. Fine sensation was normal in 34 of 49 patients (69%) with C5-6 injury, 15 of 31 (48%) with C5-7 and in 8 of 25 (32%) with total injury. Loss of protective sensation or absent sensation was noted in some palmar areas of the hand in 12 of 105 patients (11%). Normal stereognosis was recorded in 88 of the 105 patients (84%),

The surgical results of upper extremity intervention have been shown to improve hand function from paperweight/passive assist function to active assist function. Although children with cerebral palsy commonly have a sensibility deficiency in conjunction with their motor deficiency, several recent studies have disproved the previous doctrine that hand surgery should not be performed on children with sensibility deficiencies. The author's report of 134 children treated surgically showed that preoperatively 50% had impaired two-point discrimination and 75% had impaired stereognosis: impaired sens

(1) Background: Next to motor impairments, children with unilateral spastic cerebral palsy (CP) often experience sensory impairments. Intensive bimanual training is well known for improving motor abilities, though its effect on sensory impairments is less known. (2) Objective: To investigate whether bimanual intensive functional therapy without using enriched sensory materials improves somatosensory hand function. (3) Methods: A total of twenty-four participants with CP (12-17 years of age) received 80-90 h of intensive functional training aimed at improving bimanual performance in daily life.

Children with unilateral spastic cerebral palsy (USCP) often have tactile impairments. Intensive bimanual training improves the motor abilities, but the effects on the sensory system have not been studied. Here we compare the effects of bimanual training with and without tactile training on tactile impairments. Twenty children with USCP (6-15.5 years; MACS: I-III) were randomized to receive either bimanual therapy (HABIT) or HABIT+tactile training (HABIT+T). All participants received 82 h of standardized HABIT. In addition 8 sessions of 1h were provided to both groups. The HABIT+T group receiv

Investigated were 84 patients with trigeminal neuralgia. Clinical traits of the disease were compared for some additional investigation techniques: thermodolorimetry, oral cavity stereognosis, multiparameter personality assessment technique and verbalization of pain experience. The described clinical phenomena suggest the involvement of trigeminal radicle in the trigeminal neuralgia. Additional techniques point to the involvement of fast-conducting myelinated fibers running through the nerve radicle. Besides, concomitant phobic and depressive syndromes were revealed.

Oropharyngeal exercises/myofunctional therapy (OE/MT) offer complementary benefits for obstructive sleep apnea. However, the complex nature of the intervention impedes the understanding of the underlying mechanisms related to sensorimotor function and corticomotor control of involved muscles. This study explored the sensorimotor rehabilitation effects of OE/MT tasks in twenty-two healthy adults (24.1 ± 3.1 years) using a cross-over design to better understand the normal physiology of the tongue before and after these different tasks. Sessions involved breathing training (BT), tongue training (

Obstetric brachial plexus palsy (OBPP) leads to various hand-function disorders. The present study aimed to determine activity-based hand function profiles in preschool children with different OBPP functional levels. 112 children aged 44-77 months were included, and grouped on the Narakas classification: group 1, Narakas type 1; group 2, type 2: and group 3, types 3 + 4. Hand function was evaluated on the Raimondi scale, stereognosis, and the elbow/forearm and wrist/finger/thumb sections of Brachial Plexus Outcome Measure (BPOM). Groups 1 and 2 successfully and comparably completed the BPOM ha

In the oral cavity, oral stereognosis and chemesthesis refer to the abilities to recognize shapes and detect noxious substances, respectively, through various receptors distributed on the tongue. The absence of standardized methods to assess oral somatosensory perception has led to a lack of consensus regarding the relationship between taste and trigeminal sensations. While some studies reported lower trigeminal perception in taste disorders, others did not confirm this correlation. To analyze somatosensation in quantitative and qualitative taste problems, 28 patients (21 females, mean age 59.

A 47-year-old woman developed a progressive sensory deficit of the upper limbs. She lost perception of joint position, vibratory sense, skin-writing and stereognosis. Repeated tests by several examiners, up to 10 years after the onset, demonstrated normal pain and temperature sensation. The right hypoglossal nerve was involved at a late stage of the disease. CT and MRI showed an intramedullary cavity from C1 to T7. Somato-sensory evoked potentials from stimulation of the median nerves confirmed the bilateral impairment of the lemniscal pathways.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Oral stereognosis (OS) plays a significant role in the oral rehabilitation of patients with edentulism, as it influences their adaptation to new prostheses. Because of the essentially tactile characteristic of oral sensory perception, the tongue and palate appear to have a crucial function in OS. However, little is known about the influence of tongue lesions on OS and sensorial function. In addition, controversies remain regarding the role of the palate.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this clinical study was to evaluate whether tongue lesions and palatal coverage are disruptive

Surgical interventions for the spastic upper extremity aim to correct the common deformities of elbow flexion, forearm pronation, wrist flexion and ulnar deviation, and thumb-in-palm deformity. One goal is achieving optimal function and improved limb positioning. Aesthetics of the limb have a profound impact on self-esteem and satisfaction. Surgical deformity correction has not reliably been shown to improve sensory function such as stereognosis. Validated outcome measures are used to present outcomes after surgical treatment of the spastic upper extremity as it relates to motor function and l

A patient presented with a right rolandic space occupying lesion resulting in a decrease of position sense, touch and stereognosis in the left upper limb. SEPs revealed an augmentation of the right hemisphere P22 component co-existing with relative attenuation of all other right hemisphere components. The augmented P22-N31 complex represented a 'giant' potential in relation to a control group (> 2.5 S.D.). The data provide further evidence that the P22-N31 complex has separate generators from those responsible for the N20-P27-N33 components parietally and P20-N30 components frontally. The foca

The sensory function of the hand was assessed in 55 children with cerebral palsy (CP) and 15 control children with lower-limb involvement after poliomyelitis by testing stereognosis and two-point discrimination. A 0 to 10 per cent error in the post-polio group defined normal limits, according to which 51 per cent of the CP group showed impairment on one or both of the tests. These results confirm those of studies carried out 30 to 40 years ago, and draw attention to a neglected aspect of CP in which the possibility of therapeutic intervention has yet to be adequately explored.

OBJECTIVES: Precision grasping critically relies on the integrity of the corticospinal tract as evidenced in congenital hemiplegia by the correlation found between corticospinal dysgenesis and hand-movement deficits. Therefore, corticospinal dysgenesis could be used to anticipate upper-limb deficits in young infants with congenital hemiplegia. However, most studies have quantified corticospinal dysgenesis by measuring the cross-sectional area of cerebral peduncles on T1 MRI, a measure biased by other structures present in the peduncles. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the extent to w

"Hypnopuncture," a combination treatment of hypnosis and acupuncture, provides a therapeutic treatment plan for long-term therapy for patients with a distinctive gag reflex. The treatment is applied independently of the cause. In cases of emergency treatment in dentistry, the immediate compliance of a patient is of utmost importance. The long-term goal of any therapeutic measure is control of the gag reflex. A new treatment protocol is illustrated in the case of a 50-year-old patient with a severe gag reflex. After only 5 visits, dental treatment could be conducted without any auxiliary means.
