Stereotypic behavior is observed in many species within zoological institutions. Attempts to reduce such behavior typically involve some form of environmental enrichment that provides opportunities for species appropriate behavior or some degree of control within the environment. However, environmental enrichment has never been completely successful in eliminating stereotypic behavior for an entire group of animals within a zoological facility. In the wild, stereotypic behavior is rarely observed. Documenting the occurrence of stereotypic behavior in the wild, and circumstances in which it occ

BACKGROUND: Primates reared in captivity may display stereotypic behaviors. These behaviors are arguably reminiscent of human obsessive-compulsive or posttraumatic symptoms, which respond to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Captive primates with marked stereotypic behaviors were entered into a randomized controlled study of the SSRI, fluoxetine.
METHODS: A sample of 10 vervet monkeys with behaviors such as marked saluting, somersaulting, weaving, or head tossing was selected. Subjects were randomized to receive fluoxetine 1 mg/kg for 6 weeks (n=5) or no treatment (n=5). A rate

Heart rate responses to feeding of both loose-housed and tethered sows, some of which engaged in persistent behavioral stereotypies, were recorded telemetrically in order to determine if stereotypic behavior occurs in response to, and serves to reduce increased sympathetic nervous activity. Heart rates rose in response to feeding (after which stereotypic behavior is most common) and this was greater for tethered sows. This response was partly blocked by a beta-adrenoreceptor antagonist (carazolol), but not by naloxone, although the latter tended to lead to overall increases in heart rate. Thus

Stereotypies have been defined as non-goal-directed movement patterns repeated continuously for a period of time in the same form and on multiple occasions, and which are typically distractible. Stereotypical motor behaviors are a common clinical feature of a variety of neurological conditions that affect cortical and subcortical functions, including autism, tardive dyskinesia, excessive dopaminergic treatment of Parkinson's disease and frontotemporal dementia. The main differential diagnosis of stereotypies includes tic disorders, motor mannerisms, compulsion and habit. The pathophysiology of

Structural and environmental characteristics of multiple topographies of stereotypic behaviors shown by 8 individuals with developmental disabilities are described. Analysis of structural characteristics show that the parameters of stereotyped behavior (percentage of time, bout length, and bout length variability) were highly correlated. Analysis of the influence of environmental variables indicated that topographies of stereotyped behaviors were more likely to occur under conditions of low stimulation and less likely during conditions involving social contact. Individuals whose stereotyped be

OBJECTIVE: To describe the effects of treatment with the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor fluvoxamine on three patients with advanced dementia who developed a stereotypic movement disorder.
CASE SUMMARY: Three patients in a skilled nursing facility were referred by their primary physicians for psychiatric consultation to assist with the management of stereotypic behaviors. The patients received a standard medical, neurologic, and psychiatric workup for dementia. Two of the patients were diagnosed with dementia of the Alzheimer type and the other patient was diagnosed with vascular demen

Most behaviors, even simple innate reflexes, are mediated by circuits of neurons spanning areas throughout the brain. However, in most cases, the distribution and dynamics of firing patterns of these neurons during behavior are not known. We imaged activity, with cellular resolution, throughout the whole brains of zebrafish performing the optokinetic response. We found a sparse, broadly distributed network that has an elaborate but ordered pattern, with a bilaterally symmetrical organization. Activity patterns fell into distinct clusters reflecting sensory and motor processing. By correlating

We examined the relation between stereotyped behavior and self-injurious behavior (SIB) for 1871 individuals with intellectual disabilities who had a score of >0 on the Behavior Problem Inventory (BPI-01; Rojahn et al., 2001). We report three main findings: First, structural equation modeling techniques (SEM) revealed that the BPI-01stereotyped behavior subscale scores predicted BPI-01 SIB subscale scores. Second, when stereotyped behavior was modeled as a predictor of SIB, mixture-modeling techniques revealed two groups of individuals: one in which stereotyped behavior was a strong, statistic

Investigation of how specialized olfactory cues, such as pheromones, are detected has primarily focused on the function of receptor neurons within a subsystem of the nasal cavity, the vomeronasal organ (VNO). Behavioral analyses have long indicated that additional, non-VNO olfactory neurons are similarly necessary for pheromone detection; however, the identity of these neurons has been a mystery. Recent molecular, behavioral, and genomic approaches have led to the identification of multiple atypical sensory circuits that display characteristics suggestive of a specialized function. This review

Fast-scan cyclic voltammetry on freely moving rats was used to determine whether a correlation exists between the increase in stereotyped behavior and dopamine (DA) uptake inhibition following cocaine (20 mg/kg, i.p.) administration. Voltammetric recordings were performed every 100 ms at a carbon fiber microelectrode, positioned in the nucleus accumbens. The present experiments revealed that the time course of the changes in K(m) strictly parallels the time course of the increase in stereotypy after cocaine. More importantly, the magnitudes of cocaine-stimulated stereotypy were positively and

The present study evaluated whether environmental enrichment-related effects on the development of stereotyped behavior in deer mice were associated with alterations in neuronal metabolic activity. Deer mice were reared under either enriched or standard housing conditions for 60 days following weaning. All mice were then placed in automated photocell detectors and classified as either stereotypic or non-stereotypic. Neuronal metabolic activity was then assessed using cytochrome oxidase (CO) histochemistry. The results demonstrated that environmental enrichment significantly increased neuronal

The present study was designed to determine whether the environmental context in which amphetamine is administered plays a role in the development of sensitization to the stereotyped behavioral effects of amphetamine in mice. In male CF-1 mice, the dose-response curve for stereotyped behavior elicited by amphetamine was shifted 1.9-fold to the left 48 h after pretreatment with 14 mg/kg amphetamine. Behavioral sensitization only developed in mice that were pretreated in the same or a similar environment as that of the test environment. In addition, when mice were placed in an environment that a

RATIONALE: The role of the environment in the sensitization of the stereotyped behavioral effects of apomorphine is unclear, since sensitization of this drug effect has either been difficult to demonstrate or has been shown to occur with a low but not a higher dose of apomorphine.
OBJECTIVES: The present study was designed to determine whether sensitization of the stereotyped behavioral effects induced by a single dose of apomorphine is dependent on environmental context.
METHODS: CF-1 mice were pretreated with apomorphine or vehicle under different environmental conditions and tested for st

Stereotypies are high-frequency, highly repetitive, nonfunctional behaviors that are also often characterized as rhythmic. Rhythmicity suggests that the behavior is periodic, occurring at fixed intervals. Few studies, however, have rigorously demonstrated periodicity in stereotypy. This study examined various topographies of stereotypy in 9 participants and used spectral methods to detect existence of periodicties. Two general patterns emerged in the spectral analysis. Participants who engaged in stereotypic rocking showed peaks in their power spectra; participants who engaged in other topogra

The development of the Stereotyped Behavior Scale for adolescents and adults with mental retardation was described. Service provider staff in three states selected 600 clients known for stereotypic behaviors and then used 66 items to rate the frequency of occurrence of these behaviors. Items with test-retest reliability less than .45 and/or interrater agreement less than .30 were deleted. The remaining 30 items were subjected to a principal component analysis with varimax rotation. A single-factor solution emerged, which explained 24.9% of the variance. After eliminating 4 items with low facto

RATIONALE: At high doses, methamphetamine produces repetitive stereotypic behaviors, and the degree to which this occurs is heritable.
OBJECTIVES: Mice of a B6D2F2 genetic background were selectively bred for four generations for high (HMA) and low (LMA) numbers of stereotyped chewing episodes measured for 1 min at 33 min post-injection following 10 mg/kg methamphetamine (changed to 7 mg/kg for the high line and 15 mg/kg for the low line in the third selected generation to avoid ceiling and floor effects, respectively). We sought to determine whether stereotypic behaviors other than number of

This study provides evidence for intrinsic and extrinsic motivators for stereotypical and repetitive behavior in children with autism and intellectual disability and children with intellectual disability alone. We modified the Motivation Assessment Scale (MAS) (1988b); dividing it into intrinsic and extrinsic measures and adding items to assess anxiety as an intrinsic motivator. Rasch analysis of data from 279 MASs (74 children) revealed that the items formed two unidimensional scales. Anxiety was a more likely intrinsic motivator than sensory seeking for children with dual diagnoses; the reve
