Stevia (Stevia rebaudiana), recognized for its low-calorie, sugar-free attributes, and various health benefits, has potential applications beyond human consumption, particularly in agriculture. This study explored the potential uses of Stevia in both agricultural and healthcare contexts by examining its plant-inhibitory, cytotoxic, and antioxidant effects. The methanolic extract of Stevia leaves was fractionated into hexane, ethyl acetate, chloroform, and water fractions. These fractions were then subjected to the bioassay analyses above and underwent identification of their chemical constitue

UDP-glycosyltransferases (UGTs) are a promising class of biocatalysts that offer a sustainable alternative for chemical glycosylation of natural products. In this study, we aimed to characterize plant-derived UGTs from the GT-1 family with an emphasis on their acceptor promiscuity and their potential application in glycosylation processes. Recombinant expression in E. coli provided sufficient amounts of enzyme for the in-depth characterization of the salicylic acid UGT from Capsella rubella (UGT-SACr) and the stevia UGT from Stevia rebaudiana (UGT-76G1Sr). The latter was found to have a remark

Stevia rebaudiana (Bertoni), commonly called candy leaf or sweet leaf, endemic to South America, is an important medicinal plant. As a source of low calorie natural sweetener 'stevoside', it is used in obesity, diabetes, treatment of heartburn and tooth decay, and also serves as a food supplement. Large scale commercial propagation of S. rebaudiana demands a suitable protocol. Here, we propose an improved protocol for in vitro multiplication of S. rebaudiana from nodal explants. In this protocol, the effect of laboratory grade urea on multiple shoot induction from nodal explants was studied. T

The capability of transglycosylated materials, α-glycosyltransferase-treated stevia (Stevia-G) and α-glycosyl hesperidin (Hsp-G), to enhance the bioavailability of poorly water-soluble drugs was investigated. Spray-dried particles (SDPs) of drug/transglycosylated material, such as, flurbiprofen (FP)/Stevia-G, probucol (PRO)/Stevia-G, FP/Hsp-G, and PRO/Hsp-G were prepared. All SDPs showed pronounced improvement in both dissolution rate and apparent drug solubility. The amount of dissolved PRO was significantly improved to that of untreated PRO crystals when prepared as SDPs of PRO/Stevia-G or P

Silver and gold nanoparticles were synthesized by reducing silver and gold ions using previously unexplored stevia extracts prepared with water, methanol, and ethanol as solvents. These extracts served as both reducing and stabilizing agents. The nanoparticles were characterized using ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, which confirmed surface plasmon resonance (SPR) at 400-450 nm for AgNPs and 500-550 nm for AuNPs, with an additional peak at 650-700 nm. Zeta potential analysis revealed polydispersity index (PdI) values of 0.269, 0.328, and 0.184 for AgNPs, and 0.428, 0.366, and 0.408 f

Plant cell and tissue culture makes provision of a sustainable and nature-friendly strategy for the production of secondary metabolites, and modern progress in gene editing and genome engineering provides novel possibilities to improve both the qualitative and quantitative aspects of such phytochemicals. The ever-expanding quest for plant-based medicine to treat diabetes facilitates large-scale cultivation of Stevia rebaudiana to enhance the yield of its much-coveted low-calorie sweetener glycosides. The potential to process stevia as a "natural" product should enhance the acceptance of stevio

The aim of this study was to determine the composition and antioxidant potential of leaves of a new variety of Stevia rebaudiana (Stevia UEM-13). Stevia leaves of UEM-13 contain rebaudioside A as the main glycoside, while most wild Stevia plants contain stevioside. Furthermore can be multiplied by seed, which reduces the cost of plant culture techniques as other clonal varieties are multiplied by buds, requiring sophisticated and expensive seedling production systems. Ethanol and methanol were used in the extraction to determine the bioactive compounds. The methanolic extract was fractionated

The shoots of the Stevia rebaudiana plant have been identified as a significant source of biologically active compounds. Of these, phenolic compounds and steviol glycosides are of particular significance. The present study explores the effect of diverse in vitro culture systems (i.e., agar-gelled medium, static liquid medium, liquid medium with orbital agitation, and liquid medium with glass beads) on the accumulation of these compounds in stevia shoots. The results demonstrated that the presence of agitated liquid media led to a substantial augmentation in the accumulation of total soluble ph

Lipophagy, a type of autophagy that breaks down lipid droplets, is essential in the regulation of intracellular lipid accumulation and intracellular free fatty acid levels in numerous organisms and metabolic conditions. We investigated the effects of Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni (S), a low-calorie sweetener, and stevioside (SS) on hepatic steatosis and autophagy in hepatocytes, as well as in db/db mice. S and SS reduced the body and liver weight and levels of serum triglyceride, total cholesterol, and hepatic lipogenic proteins. In addition, S and SS increased the levels of fatty acid oxidase, pe
