Sublethal chemical stimulation of arthropod parasitoids and parasites of agricultural and environmental importance.

An increasing number of studies have reported stimulation of various organisms in the presence of environmental contaminants. This has created a need to critically evaluate sublethal stimulation and hormetic responses of arthropod parasitoids and parasites following exposure to pesticides and other contaminants. Examining this phenomenon with a focus on arthropods of agricultural and environmental importance serves as the framework for this literature review. This review shows that several pesticides, with diverse chemical structures and different modes of action, applied individually or in co

Trigeminal activation patterns evoked by chemical stimulation of the dura mater in rats.

BACKGROUND: Although migraine is one of the most common primary headaches, its therapy is still limited in many cases. The use of animal models is crucial in the development of novel therapeutic strategies, but unfortunately, none of them show all aspects of the disease, therefore, there is a constant need for further improvement in this field. The application of inflammatory agents on the dura mater is a widely accepted method to mimic neurogenic inflammation in rodents, which plays a key role in the pathomechanism of migraine. Complete Freund's Adjuvant (CFA), and a mixture of inflammatory m

[Pharmacological studies on the cough-like reflex induced by chemical stimulation (author's transl)].

To investigate the mechanism of the cough-like reflex (CLR), we employed 1.1-dimethyl-4-phenylpiperazinium iodide (DMPP). In dogs anesthetized with alpha-chloralose, CLR was induced by administration of DMPP (i.v. and intracarotid arterial), lobeline and nicotine. Repeated administration of DMPP did not cause a tachphylaxis, however, lobeline and nicotine did induce a tachphylaxis. DMPP (i.a.), lobeline, nicotine and histamine caused an increase in respiratory resistance as measured by a Respiratory Resistance Meter, while DMPP (i.v.) did not. Chest wall kinematics during chemically stimulated breathing in healthy man.

Chest wall compartment kinematics and respiratory muscle coordinate activity, during either hypercapnia or hypoxia, have not been comparatively assessed in healthy humans. We assessed the displacement volume of the chest wall (Vcw) in 5 normal subjects during hypoxic-normocapnic and hypercapnic-hyperoxic rebreathing by using linearized magnetometers. Vcw was divided into displacement volumes of the rib cage (Vrc) and the abdomen (Vab). Esophageal (Pes) and gastric (Pga) pressures were simultaneously recorded and transdiaphragmatic pressure (Pdi) was calculated by subtracting Pes from Pga. Pres

Synaptic plasticity after chemical deafening and electrical stimulation of the auditory nerve in cats.

The effects of deafness on brain structure and function have been studied using animal models of congenital deafness that include surgical ablation of the organ of Corti, acoustic trauma, ototoxic drugs, and hereditary deafness. This report describes the morphologic plasticity of auditory nerve synapses in response to ototoxic deafening and chronic electrical stimulation of the auditory nerve. Normal kittens were deafened by neonatal administration of neomycin that eliminated auditory receptor cells. Some of these cats were raised deaf, whereas others were chronically implanted with cochlear e

Chemical stimulation of the nucleus tractus solitarii decreases cerebral blood flow in anesthetized rats.

In anesthetized (chloralose and urethane), paralyzed and artificially ventilated rats, the neurons in the nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS) were chemically stimulated by microinjections of L-glutamate and the cerebral blood flow (CBF) was determined using a combination of labeled microspheres (either 57Co, 113Sn and 46Sc or 141Ce, 85Sr and 46Sc). Unilateral chemical stimulation of the NTS (n = 14) decreased CBF significantly in most brain areas. The decrease in CBF was not due to the decrease in arterial blood pressure (ABP) because the CBF of the whole cerebral cortex during the chemical stimu

Adrenal secretion of catecholamines evoked by chemical stimulation of trigeminal nucleus caudalis in the cat.

Microinjections of the neuroexcitatory substance L-glutamate, were made directly into various laminae of trigeminal nucleus caudalis to examine the influence of medullary dorsal horn neurons on the adrenal secretion of catecholamines in the anesthetized cat. Microinjections into the marginal layers (lamina I-II) or into the deep magnocellular portion (lamina V-VI) of nucleus caudalis ipsilateral to the adrenal vein sample evoked a prompt increase in the secretion of epinephrine and a smaller, yet consistent, increase in the secretion of norepinephrine. Injections into the magnocellular layers

Influence of chemical stimulation of central dopaminergic system on the open field behaviour of rats.

Influence of some substances known to selectively modify the brain levels of dopamine, was studied on the Open Field behaviour in rats. Of the agents studied, I-dopa, benztropine and amantadine showed some similarity with amphetamine in exhibiting a high degree of complex stereotyped behaviour in rats. The complex stereotyped behaviour due to amphetamine and the similarity shown by these antiparkinsonian agents has been explained on the basis of brain dopamine levels. On the other hand apomorphine depressed the Open Field behaviour and produced a typical stereotyped biting in rats. Since 6-hyd

Cellular Output and Physicochemical Properties of the Membrane-Derived Vesicles Depend on Chemical Stimulants.

Synthetic liposomes are widely used as drug delivery vehicles in biomedical treatments, such as for mRNA-based antiviral vaccines like those recently developed against SARS-CoV-2. Extracellular vesicles (EVs), which are naturally produced by cells, have emerged as a next-generation delivery system. However, key questions regarding their origin within cells remain unresolved. In this regard, plasma membrane vesicles (PMVs), which are essentially produced from the cellular plasma membrane (PM), present a promising alternative. Unfortunately, their properties relevant to biomedical applications h

Reduction in activity by noxious chemical stimulation is ameliorated by immersion in analgesic drugs in zebrafish.

Research has recently demonstrated that larval zebrafish show similar molecular responses to nociception to those of adults. Our study explored whether unprotected larval zebrafish exhibited altered behaviour after exposure to noxious chemicals and screened a range of analgesic drugs to determine their efficacy to reduce these responses. This approach aimed to validate larval zebrafish as a reliable replacement for adults as well as providing a high-throughput means of analysing behavioural responses. Zebrafish at 5 days post-fertilization were exposed to known noxious stimuli: acetic acid (0.

Stereotyped yawning responses induced by electrical and chemical stimulation of paraventricular nucleus of the rat.

Yawning was evoked by electrical or chemical stimulation in the paraventricular nucleus (PVN) of anesthetized, spontaneously breathing rats. To evaluate physiological aspects of yawning, we monitored polygraphic measures as follows; a coordinated motor pattern of yawning was assessed by monitoring breathing [intercostal electromyogram (EMG)], mouth opening (digastric EMG), and stretching of the trunk (back EMG). We also recorded blood pressure (BP), heart rate, and the electrocorticogram (ECoG) to evaluate autonomic function and arousal responses during yawning. A stereotyped yawning response

Evidence for the involvement of serotonin in the antinociception induced by electrical or chemical stimulation of the mesencephalic tectum.

A great deal of evidence has shown that electrical stimulation or microinjections of GABAA blockers, such as bicuculline, into the midbrain tectum (MT) produce escape behavior, which has been associated to fear. This study was aimed to examine the characteristics of the analgesia that follows the escape behavior induced by electrical (freezing and escape thresholds) and chemical (bicuculline microinjections) stimulation of the midbrain tectum. Immediately after the expression of the aversive responses the rats were submitted to the tail-flick test. The obtained results show that analgesia alwa

Morphological and chemical analysis of a deep brain stimulation electrode explanted from a dystonic patient.

Deep brain stimulation is an effective treatment for different types of dystonia; nevertheless dystonic movements could provoke hardware-related complications, including fractures or electrodes displacement. This study focuses on a morphological and structural analysis of a malfunctioning electrode removed from a dystonic patient. In this case, high impedance values and worsening of symptoms were observed. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) were performed on the explanted electrode. The qualitative and quantitative data collected from the damaged electrode wer

Distribution of gustatory sensitivities in rat taste cells: whole-cell responses to apical chemical stimulation.

Several taste transduction mechanisms have been demonstrated in mammals, but little is known about their distribution within and across receptor cells. We recorded whole-cell responses of 120 taste cells of the rat fungiform papillae and soft palate maintained within the intact epithelium in a modified Ussing chamber, which allowed us to flow tastants across the apical membrane while monitoring the activity of the cell with a patch pipette. Taste stimuli were: 0.1 m sucrose, KCl, and NH(4)Cl, 0.032 m NaCl, and 3.2 mm HCl and quinine hydrochloride (QHCl). When cells were held at their resting p

Chemical stimulation of the lateral hypothalamus by carbachol attenuated the formalin-induced pain behaviors in rats.

Electrical and chemical stimulation of the lateral hypothalamus (LH) produces analgesia. Previous studies emphasized the importance of LH in the modulation of nociceptive behaviors in the acute pain models. In the current study, for the first time, we examined the effect of direct chemical stimulation of the LH with cholinergic receptor agonist, carbachol, on pain-related behaviors in the formalin test as a model of persistent inflammatory pain. Forty-eight adult male Wistar rats were implanted unilaterally with cannula into the LH. Four doses of carbachol (62.5, 125, 250 and 500 nM/0.5 μl sal
