Rumination, or the chewing and re-swallowing of regurgitated stomach contents, can be found in up to 10% of institutionalized individuals with severe or profound mental retardation. Serious physical consequences, including death, can result from the disorder. Unfortunately, rumination can be subtle and difficult to observe and often continues untreated. Additionally, the research literature has provided divergent results without clear treatment guidance for clinicians. We present an overview of the history of rumination, a review of the literature on its etiology and treatment, and recommendat

The ruminant gastrointestinal tract hosts a complex microbial ecosystem vital for nutrient absorption, with each segment displaying distinct morphological and microbial compositional features compared to monogastric animals. While most studies rely on fecal samples, these fail to capture region-specific variations, limiting insight into microbe-physiology adaptations. In this study, we investigated Elaphodus cephalophus by measuring circular, longitudinal, and mucosal layer thickness across intestinal segments and by profiling bacterial and fungal communities via 16S and its rRNA sequencing. Rumination syndrome is one of the functional gastroduodenal disorders. Effortless and repetitive regurgitation of recently ingested food from the stomach to the oral cavity followed by rechewing and reswallowing or spitting are the characteristic clinical features. This disorder is believed to be uncommon, but many patients with this disorder are overlooked by their physicians. Rumination might be caused by a reversal of the gastric contents through the esophagogastric junction, which is initiated by an increase in intragastric pressure. The characteristic symptoms are sufficient for the diagn

Previous studies have identified a reliable relation between the quantity of food ingested and ruminating in profoundly retarded individuals and have established some parametric characteristics of this relation. The present study investigated three different properties of food that may influence this relation. Experiment 1 examined the role of stomach distention produced by including in the subject's diet wheat bran in amounts equivalent to and exceeding the calculated amount of crude fiber in the starch-satiation diet reported by Rast, Johnston, Drum, and Conrin (1981) and Rast, Johnston, and

Rumination is an uncommon disorder with controversial pathophysiology. We have studied a classic ruminator with esophageal, gastric, and small bowel motility techniques during episodes of voluntary regurgitation. His regurgitation was accompanied by simultaneous positive pressure deflections in multiple locations in the stomach, simultaneous negative pressure deflections in multiple locations in the esophagus followed rapidly by simultaneous positive pressure deflections, brief (1-second) periods of lower esophageal sphincter relaxation, and deep inspiratory movements. No intrinsic abnormaliti

Despite the growing interest in the ruminants' gastrointestinal tract (GIT) microbiomes' ability to degrade plant materials by animal husbandry and industrial sectors, only a few studies addressed browsing ruminants. The present work describes the taxonomic and functional profile of the bacterial and archaeal communities from five different gastrointestinal sections (rumen, omasum-abomasum, jejunum, cecum and colon) of browsing Capra hircus, by metabarcoding using 16S rRNA genes hypervariable regions. The bacterial communities across the GITs are mainly composed of Bacillota and Bacteroidota.

The central nervous system undertakes the homeostatic role of sensing nutrient intake and body reserves, integrating the information, and regulating energy intake and/or energy expenditure. Few tasks regulated by the brain hold greater survival value, particularly important in farmed ruminant species, where the demands of pregnancy, lactation and/or growth are not easily met by often bulky plant-based and sometimes nutrient-sparse diets. Information regarding metabolic state can be transmitted to the appetite control centres of the brain by a diverse array of signals, such as stimulation of th

According to the Rome criteria, rumination is considered to be an esophageal functional disorder. Because documentation of rumination is difficult, it has been suggested that rumination is a clinical diagnosis. Even though a clinical diagnosis of rumination can be based only on history, this conclusion often leaves both the patient and the physician dissatisfied. In this article we describe the case of a 26-year-old man referred for evaluation of persistent regurgitation. By using combined multichannel intraluminal impedance and manometry we were able to document the sequence of events leading

Rumination is a syndrome characterized by repetitive regurgitation of small amounts of food from the stomach. The food is then partially or completely rechewed, reswallowed, or expelled. This syndrome is relatively common in infants and mentally challenged persons, but it also occurs in adults with normal intelligence. The rumination syndrome is an underappreciated condition in adults who frequently receive a misdiagnosis of vomiting due to gastroparesis or gastroesophageal reflux. Difficulties in establishing the correct diagnosis may be caused by a lack of awareness of the condition among ph

We described the macroscopic anatomy of the intestines and their peritoneal folds of five adult pampas deer (Ozotoceros bezoarticus), a cervid species considered to ingest a high proportion of grass in its natural diet. The mean (+/-SD) body weight was 17 (+/-2) kg. The small intestine and the caecocolon measured 495 (+/-37) cm and 237 (+/-24) cm in length, respectively, with an average ratio (small intestine:caecocolon) of 1.9 (+/-0.1). The ascending colon had two and a half centripetal gyri, a central flexure and two centrifugal gyri. The spiral ansa, which was similar to an ellipse, was fix

A device is described (RMBZ) which allows to register the movements of the lower jaws of cattle during food consumption and rumination. A microfeeler is connected to the device which is fastened to the halter. With the use of this device following data can be obtained separately: the total number of chewing movements; the number of bits of food swallowed and the length of chewing period in this way it has become possible to avoid the laborious and time-consuming work that is necessary to analyze strip charts. Trials were performed with varying patterns of food ration showing that this device i

The unique structure of the stomach, including the rumen, reticulum, omasum, and abomasum, indicates the differences between the ruminant and monogastric animals in the digestion of nutrients. This difference is reflected in the majority of dietary nutrients that may be fermented in the rumen. Significant proteins and a certain amount of starch can flow to the small intestine apart from rumen. The initial phase of small intestinal digestion requires pancreatic digestive enzymes. In theory, the enzymatic digestion and utilization efficiency of starch in the small intestine are considerably high

Although foregut fermentation is often equated with rumination in the literature, functional ruminants (ruminants, camelids) differ fundamentally from non-ruminant foregut fermenters (e.g. macropods, hippos, peccaries). They combine foregut fermentation with a sorting mechanism that allows them to remasticate large particles and clear their foregut quickly of digested particles; thus, they do not only achieve high degrees of particle size reduction but also comparatively high food intakes. Regurgitation and remastication of stomach contents have been described sporadically in several non-rumin

1. The effect of A and B sequence contractions of the reticulo-rumen on passage rate of digesta was compared in buffaloes and cattle fed low quality rhodes grass. 2. Both species ate the same amount per unit body weight but buffaloes spent 53% more time ruminating than cattle. 3. Buffaloes had fewer A and B sequence contractions each day and the rate of these contractions during eating, ruminating and at rest were slower. 4. A larger pool of fine feed particles in the rumen of buffaloes, generated by extra ruminating activity was associated with the 30% shorter mean residence time of particula

Based on gross dissection of fifteen adult animals (11 females, 4 males), we described the arterial supply of the stomach and intestines of the pampas deer (Ozotoceros bezoarticus), a South American endangered species. The coeliac artery emitted the splenic, left gastric and hepatic arteries. The splenic artery directed towards the spleen, and the right ruminal artery, which is its only collateral directed towards the stomach, being the main artery of the rumen. The left gastric artery gave origin to the left ruminal, the reticular and the left gastroepiploic arteries. The left gastroepiploic

BACKGROUND: While high resolution esophageal manometry combined with impedancometry has demonstrated that gastric pressurizations lead to rumination, the contribution of upper esophageal sphincter (UES) and esophagogastric junction (EGJ) function to rumination is unclear. Behavioral therapy with diaphragmatic breathing (DB) can reduce rumination. We aimed to evaluate the pressures in the stomach, EGJ and UES during rumination and the effects of DB augmented with biofeedback therapy.
METHODS: Sixteen patients with rumination were studied with manometry and impedancometry before and after a mea

BACKGROUND: Rumination syndrome is an uncommon condition characterised by the self-induced regurgitation from the stomach to the mouth of recently ingested meal that is chewed and reswallowed. Rumination is caused by a voluntary rise in intra-abdominal and intra-gastric pressure leading to the reflux of the gastric content into the oesophagus. However, the precise mechanisms preventing reflux at the gastro-oesophageal junction during the rise in intra-gastric pressure remains unknown.
METHODS: In 5 patients, rumination episodes were monitored using combined multiple intra-luminal impedance mo

In mammalian herbivores, faecal particle size indicates chewing efficiency. Proboscis monkeys (Nasalis larvatus) are foregut fermenters in which regurgitation and remastication (i.e. rumination) was observed in the wild, but not with the same consistency as found in ruminants and camelids. To test whether this species has exceptional chewing efficiency among primates, as ruminants have among mammals, we compared faecal particle size in free-ranging specimens with those of 12 other primate species. The discrete mean faecal particle size (dMEAN) increased with body mass (M) as dMEAN (mm) = 0.65

The semi-domesticated gayal (Bos frontalis) is an endangered browsing ruminant inhabiting the rugged Eastern Himalayan foothills, and maintains an energy-intensive lifestyle on nutrient-poor, fiber-rich feed. However, the dietary, microbial, and host physiological features underlying this adaptation remain poorly understood. Here, we analyzed fecal metagenomes from ten bovine populations (n = 334) to characterize dietary composition. Then we profiled the four-chambered (FC) stomach microbiome in adult gayal (Bos frontalis), yak (Bos grunniens), and taurine cattle (Bos taurus). Host transcripto
