Denture stomatitis is the most prevalent form of oral candidiasis and the most frequent oral lesion in removable prosthesis wearers. It is characterized by an inflammatory response of the denture-bearing mucosa, especially the palatal mucosa, and its clinical signs include chronic edema and erythema, and papillary hyperplasia. Despite having a multifactorial etiology, its main etiological agent is the infection by Candida albicans. Given its high treatment failure rates, an in vivo model of denture stomatitis should be established to test alternative treatments. The aim of this study is to rev

Candida-associated denture stomatitis (CADS) is a fungal infection affecting 60-65% of denture wearers. Its etiology is complex and multifactorial and often associated with host immunodeficiency. Evidence exists that vitamin D has potential immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory effects. The aim of this case-control study was to assess the association between vitamin D levels and CADS. The study included 32 complete denture wearers with CADS and 32 sex- and age-matched complete denture wearers without CADS. The patients were clinically examined, and the severity of denture stomatitis was asses

Denture stomatitis is a multifactorial pathological condition of the oral mucosa that affects up to 72% of denture wearers. It is commonly seen on the palatal mucosa and characterized by erythema on the oral mucosa that are in contact with the denture surface. The aim of this study was to incorporate 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) and dimethylaminohexadecyl methacrylate (DMAHDM) into a high impact polymethylmethacrylate heat-cured denture base acrylic resin as a potential treatment for denture stomatitis. We used a comparative study design to examine the effect of incorporating

Denture stomatitis is a highly prevalent oral mucosal infection caused by Candida biofilm formation on the denture surface. In this study, an antifungal polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) denture nanocomposite (MCZ-P-AgNPs/PMMA) was prepared by incorporating miconazole-loaded pectin-stabilized silver nanoparticles (MCZ-P-AgNPs) into the PMMA matrix. Response surface methodology was used to finalize the synthesis of AgNPs via the pectin-mediated green reduction method. To address the poor aqueous solubility of miconazole, the β-cyclodextrin inclusion complexation strategy was employed. MCZ-P-AgNPs

One of the most common oral diseases affecting people wearing dentures is chronic atrophic candidiasis or denture stomatitis (DS). The aim of the paper is to provide an update on the pathogenesis, presentation, and management of DS in general dental practice settings. A comprehensive review of the literature published in the last ten years was undertaken using multiple databases, including PubMed via MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Scopus. The eligible articles were analyzed to identify evidence-based strategies for the management of DS. Despite its multifactorial nature, the leading cause of DS is the d

BACKGROUND: This study reports denture stomatitis (DS) prevalence from a large USA probability sample from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 1988-1994 (NHANES III).
METHODS: Oral examinations were performed on 3450 individuals 18-90+ years of age (mean: 59.2; SD: 0.50 years), 57.7% male and 42.3% female. Multivariable logistic regression models were fitted for DS using sociodemographic, denture quality, blood analytes, alcohol and tobacco use, history of diabetes, and current antibiotic use as covariates. Odds ratios (OR), adjusted for other covariates in each model (AOR)

Little information is available about the acquired pellicle layer that is formed on denture surfaces or its role in regulating microbial colonization of the prosthetic surface. Because denture-induced stomatitis is associated with increased numbers of Candida albicans and other microorganisms on the denture surface, the acquired denture pellicle (ADP) may play a role in modulating this colonization. This study examined and compared ADP from healthy patients and patients with stomatitis by chemical and immunochemical methods. The ADP was found to be composed of a selectively adsorbed layer cont

Allergic contact stomatitis to gold is rare. To our knowledge, seven cases caused by dental restorations have been previously reported. Each of the patients was female. This report documents an allergic reaction to gold in a fixed prosthesis. A female patient, previously sensitized to gold earrings, experienced an itching and burning pain sensation and ulceration of the oral tissues adjacent to the gold restoration. Patch tests confirmed the allergy to gold. The dentist needs to be aware of the symptoms that are characteristic of the allergic manifestations of gold. Inquiries about allergies t

The clinical and histological appearance of the different types of denture stomatitis are in many respects very similar and confluent. In order to study the correlation between clinical and histological appearance and amount of yeasts, 48 patients with denture stomatitis and 24 with a healthy palatal mucosa were examined. The terms atrophic and hyperplastic denture stomatitis were introduced. The intensity of the palatal erythema and the growth of yeasts were most prominent among patients with hyperplastic lesions. Dryness and soreness of the mouth, angular cheilitis, spontaneous hemorrhage, g

BACKGROUND: The use of prostheses in the oral cavity creates favorable conditions for Candida colonization, which may subsequently lead to Candida-associated denture stomatitis (CADS). Due to its many contributing factors and frequent relapses, CADS is difficult to manage. Given the rise in drug resistance among fungal species, it is critical to develop new therapeutic approaches, reduce the required dosage of medications, and minimize the toxicity and side effects of therapy.
HIGHLIGHT: Salivary lactoferrin, a multifunctional glycoprotein, is thought to be the first line of defense against m

Denture stomatitis (DS) is a multifactorial disease, but the proliferation of Candida albicans (C. albicans) is the main causative factor. Different modalities have been suggested for the prevention and treatment of DS. Among the different approaches that have been implemented to inhibit and control DS there are the topical application of antifungal agents, the surface modification of the denture base and the incorporation of antimicrobial agents into the denture base material. Antifungal agents can effectively control DS, but the recurrence of the disease is common. Accordingly, it has been s
