Examinations of 18 patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis, 8 with ulcerative necrotic gingivitis, 10 with lichen planus, 10 with herpetic stomatitis, and of 24 patients without evident clinical symptoms of buccal mucosa involvement but complaining of various stomatogenic sensations, e.g. burning, tightness, pain and pricking in the buccal mucosa, perverted taste, etc., showed that chronic diseases of the buccal mucosa involve expressed shifts in the microbiocenosis, namely, dysbacteriosis of different severity.

The study is based upon the results of clinical laboratory examination of 33 patients with diagnosis of recurrent herpetic stomatitis. The control group included 26 healthy persons. In patients with manifestations of herpetic infection of mucous tunic of oral cavity the pronounced abnormalities of indicators of secretory immunity (lactoferrin, secretory immunoglobulin A) correlating with hygiene index are established. At the same time, indicator of antiviral immunity (alpha-interferon) characterized by absence of significant changes in this group of patients.

Hand, foot, and mouth disease, also known as vesicular stomatitis with exanthem, is a vesicular disorder affecting both skin and oral mucosa. The disease is usually caused by Coxsackie virus A-16 and affects mainly children. The oral lesions may require differential diagnosis from other conditions, such as herpetic gingivostomatitis, aphthous stomatitis, and herpangina. Hand, foot, and mouth disease should not be confused with foot-and-mouth disease of cattle, which is rare in human beings and is not caused by Coxsackie virus.

Soft tissue lesions are among the most commonly occurring pathologic conditions in the oral cavity. The causes of these lesions can vary from immunologic and viral reactions to underlying systemic disease, dermatologic lesions, or neoplasms. The diagnosis of these conditions is usually based on the history, clinical appearance, and results of diagnostic procedures such as smears, culture, or examination of biopsy specimens when indicated. This paper will discuss the diagnosis and management of some of the most commonly occurring oral lesions, such as recurrent aphthous ulcers, herpetic ulcers,

The literature on herpetic involvement of the oesophagus is reviewed and a case is described in which the presumptive clinical diagnosis of primary Herpesvirus hominis stomatitis and oesophagitis and subsequently oesophageal strictures was made. The differential diagnosis of an oesophageal lesion and its treatment are discussed.

Oral manifestations of HIV infection in children include oral candidiasis, herpetic stomatitis, oral hairy leukoplakia, parotid gland swelling, and other bacterial, viral and mycotic infections. The frequency and natural history of those disorders are not fully defined. The purpose of this work is to inform the oral findings in 57 HIV infected children studied at the Hospital Infantil de Mexico. All 57 patients presented nonspecific gingivitis; however it was not feasible to associate it with the HIV infection; in 28 oral candidiasis was observed, and in 3 cases herpetic stomatitis was documen

In general, a detailed history and examination of the patient provides sufficient information for diagnosis. The pattern, frequency, and natural history of ulcer episodes are helpful. The presence or absence of associated features and the site of oral involvement guides most physicians accurately in the diagnosis. Additional investigations, including blood tests, and occasionally the use of oral cultures or biopsy, are needed to make a definitive diagnosis. A multispecialty approach is often necessary to evaluate patients with other systemic features. Most acute oral ulcers heal spontaneously

BACKGROUND: Gingivostomatitis is a common clinical manifestation of primary herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) infection in children. The most common complication of herpetic gingivostomatitis is dehydration; rarely, it may be complicated by secondary bacteremia, and Kingella kingae and group A Streptococcus infections have been reported to be responsible for such episodes.
METHODS: We describe the clinical course of a 4.5-year-old girl several years after a liver transplantation, who presented with high fever, vesicular lesions in the buccal region, and cervical lymphadenopathy.
RESULTS: V
