Comparative study of diseases of the stomatognathic system and specific parameters of osteoporosis.

UNLABELLED: What are the specific parameters of dental health that present with modifications in osteoporosis (OP)? Both OP and a decreased bone mass can affect dental health. A low mineral density may lead to the loss of dentures because the jaw is exposed to the effects of periodontitis and without strong sustainability the teeth may lose their stability. INTRODUCTION: We compared the values of the periodontal index (IP) with a T score for women presenting with OP at menopause and those without OP. We found that there is a relation between OP and the loss of bone mass at the oral-facial lev

Stomatognathic System Changes in Obese Patients Undergoing Bariatric Surgery: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is a multifactorial chronic disease involving multiple organs, devices, and systems involving important changes in the stomatognathic system, such as in the orofacial muscles, temporomandibular joint, cheeks, nose, jaw, maxilla, oral cavity, lips, teeth, tongue, hard/soft palate, larynx, and pharynx. Patients with obesity indicated for bariatric surgery reportedly presented with abnormalities in the structures and function of the stomatognathic apparatus. This occurs through the accumulation of adipose tissue in the oral cavity and pharyngeal and laryngeal regions. Therefor

The biological effects of occlusal trauma on the stomatognathic system - a focus on animal studies.

The aim of this review of the literature was to assess the biological effects of occlusal trauma on the stomatognathic system focusing on animal studies. However, there are no conclusive explanations on the association between occlusal trauma and disease of the stomatognathic system. A literature survey was performed using the Medline database, covering the period from 1967 to 2012. Over 300 abstracts were reviewed, and 70 manuscripts were selected. Additional references from citations within the articles were obtained, and current textbooks were also used. This review does not include the eff

[The role of the basic skeletal system in the stomatognathic apparatus. A critical review of the literature].

The authors make a literature review on the different interpretations of the stomatognathic apparatus and try to identify any component of it and to underline the importance of the basal skeletal structures (maxilla and mandible). In this study the authors examined three female patients affected by different pathologies (dysfunctional, malformative, and traumatic) treated at the Maxillo-Facial Surgery Department of "La Sapienza" University of Rome; in all cases the basal skeletal structures were involved with a total functional alteration of the stomatognathic apparatus. The primary aim of any

Movement disorders of the stomatognathic system: A blind spot between dentistry and medicine.

Movement disorders of the stomatognathic system include oromandibular dystonia (OMD), oral dyskinesia, sleep/awake bruxism, functional (psychogenic) stomatognathic movement disorders (FSMDs), tremors, and hemimasticatory spasm (HMS). Most patients first consult dentists or oral surgeons. The differential diagnoses of these involuntary movements require both neurological and dental knowledge and experience, and some of these movement disorders are likely to be diagnosed as bruxism or temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) by dental professionals. However, excepting movement disorder specialists, ne

The impact of the long-term playing of musical instruments on the stomatognathic system - review.

In this article, we have made a review of the influence of playing musical instruments on the formation of malocclusion and TMJ disorders in musicians. Primary attention was paid to the effects of wind and stringed instruments. The aim of the article was the presentation of research and opinions about this problem in the last 25 years. It is reported that long-term and repetitive playing of musical instruments, particularly stringed (violin and viola) and wind instruments can cause dysfunctions of the stomatognathic system. The impact of wind instruments was assessed in terms of the type of mo

Botulinum Toxin Therapy for Oromandibular Dystonia and Other Movement Disorders in the Stomatognathic System.

Various movement disorders, such as oromandibular dystonia, oral dyskinesia, bruxism, functional (psychogenic) movement disorder, and tremors, exist in the stomatognathic system. Most patients experiencing involuntary movements due to these disorders visit dentists or oral surgeons, who may be the first healthcare providers. However, differential diagnoses require neurological and dental knowledge. This study aimed to review scientific advances in botulinum toxin therapy for these conditions. The results indicated that botulinum toxin injection is effective and safe, with few side effects in m
