Oromandibular limb hypogenesis syndrome is a rare developmental anomaly and only a few cases are reported with complete surgical and orthodontic rehabilitation. An adult male patient with isolated hypoglossia, micrognathism, hypodontia, (oromandibular limb hypogenesis syndrome type I A) was treated with a combination of distraction osteogenesis and orthodontic intervention. The patient was followed up for the duration of 6 years from his first visit to 4 years after the surgery. The combined procedure resulted in successful and satisfactory treatment of the patient by restoring facial aestheti

A discriminant analysis was performed in a sample of 303 children with developmental disorders (DD) and 303 healthy controls (C) in order to test whether some oro-dental and physical minor anomalies could discriminate these groups of children. DD sample comprised 176 mentally retarded (MR) children. 70 children with impaired hearing (IH) and 57 children with impaired vision (IV). The control group included 303 healthy subjects, matched for sex and age. The analysis comprised seven common oral and dental anomalies: median diastema, hypodontia, impacted teeth, microdontia, dens invaginatus, uppe

Severe brain damage associated with Zika-related microcephaly (ZRM) have been reported to result in oropharyngeal dysphagia (OPD); however, it is unknown if OPD presents in children with prenatal Zika virus (ZIKV) exposure but only mild or undetectable abnormalities. The aims of this study were: to compare the frequency and characteristics of OPD in children with ZRM and in children without microcephaly born to mothers who tested polymerase chain reaction positive (PCR+) for ZIKV during pregnancy; and to investigate the concordance of caregiver reports of OPD with the diagnosis from the clinic

Macroglossia is defined as an enlarged tongue and it is usually clinically diagnosed. Pseudomacryglossia concerns a tongue that is of normal size but gives a false impression of being too large in relation to adjacent anatomical structures. The causes of macroglossia are numerous and this is why various classifications have been proposed for this condition. The consequences of macroglossia usually include a possible malfunction of the stomatognathic system, breathing and speech problems, increased mandible size, tooth spacing, diastema and other orthodontic abnormalities. The treatment of macr

Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a complex disorder characterized by a sleep-related collapse of the upper airway. The most likely candidate for the common pathway linking various abnormalities casually associated with OSAS (such as adenotonsillar hypertrophy, obesity, retro- or micrognathia, acromegaly, or more subtle structural anomalies) is an abnormally small upper airway lumen. Symptoms of OSAS that appear during sleep include snoring, abnormal motor activity, disturbed nocturnal sleep, a sensation of choking, heartburn, nocturia, nocturnal enuresis, and heavy sweating. Ectodermal dysplasia (ED) is a hereditary condition characterized by abnormal development of the skin, hair, nails, sweat glands, and the stomatognathic system. There are many different types of ectodermal dysplasia of which X-linked anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia is the most common. Multiple genes have been discovered to cause ectodermal dysplasias. With any form of ED, children may display a range of symptoms and challenging rehabilitation. This clinical report presents the treatment plan for a young patient with ED and anodontia requiring prosthetic restoration.

This article reports the successful surgical-orthodontic treatment of an elderly patient with dentofacial deformity and signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorder (TMD). The patient was a 63-year-old woman with a concave profile due to mandibular protrusion. To correct skeletal deformities, the mandible was posteriorly repositioned by employing intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy (IVRO) following presurgical orthodontic treatment. After active treatment for 31 months, the facial profile was significantly improved and satisfactory occlusion was achieved. In addition, TMD symptoms of clicki

Attempts by a combat medical officer to secure the airway of a multiple-injury patient in the field may frequently end in failure. The recurrence of such failures, despite Advanced Trauma Life Support training, is perplexing; therefore, we studied the prevalence of clinical criteria that could predispose active soldiers to difficult intubation. Such known anatomical features and the Mallampati classification were assessed by experts in 250 soldiers at a military outpatient clinic of the Israel Defense Forces. It was found that most soldiers had normal airways. Limitations of head and neck move

Cleft lip and palate (CLP) are congenital malformations of the craniofacial complex that disrupt the structure and function of the stomatognathic system, particularly articulation and phonation. These anatomical abnormalities affect pressure consonants and resonance balance, often resulting in impaired phoneme production and varying degrees of nasality. Understanding how CLP affects speech is essential for guiding rehabilitation and designing targeted early interventions. This systematic review aimed to identify the most frequently affected speech phonemes and determine the degree of nasality

Electromyography (EMG) is the most objective and reliable method available for imaging muscle function and efficiency, which is done by identifying their electrical potentials. In global surface electromyography (sEMG), surface electrodes are located on the surface of the skin, and it detects superimposed motor unit action potentials from many muscle fibers. sEMG is widely used in orthodontics and maxillofacial orthopaedics to diagnose and treat temporomandibular disorders (TMD) in patients, assess stomatognathic system dysfunctions in patients with malocclusions, and monitor orthodontic thera

Oral rehabilitation of patients with craniofacial disorders is a great challenge and needs a multidisciplinary approach. This is due to the diverse etiology of the disease and severity of changes in tissues and organs. Congenital absence of tooth germs manifested in the form of oligodontia or anodontia, the presence of persistent deciduous teeth in ectodermal dysplasia (ED), cleft lip and hard palate or cancer-induced changes in the tissues of the stomatognathic system are the most common causes of these disorders. The observed abnormalities are responsible for functional disorders of musculo-

In the context of the dental preventive medical examinations of the public health service, the orthodontical data-gathering in children's day-care centre and schools, in contrast to the diagnoses of caries disease, was made was based so far on a non-uniform methodology. In order to provide in future, also in the orthodontical sector, data material that is usable for comparative national and local health reporting, a uniform methodology should form the basis for the data acquisition. The present study makes a contribution to this objective. A goal of the work was to test two different collectio

Fetus in fetu is an extremely rare entity and refers to the growth of a "parasitic" twin within a more mature fetus due to its inclusion within cells of the blastocyst. The presence of a vertebral column is considered essential for the diagnosis of a fetus in fetu. The retroperitoneum is the most common location for a fetus in fetu and its location in the mouth is rare. We report a case of oropharyngeal mass detected on antenatal sonography with imaging features consistent with a fetus in fetu. Complete surgical removal of the mass was aided by imaging. Follow-up of these patients is recommend

Ectodermal dysplasias are rare hereditary disorders characterized by abnormal development of certain tissues and structures of ectodermal origin. The condition is important for dentists as it affects teeth resulting in hypodontia or anodontia and dentist plays an important role in rehabilitation of the patient. Affected young children with anodontia not only have difficulties in eating and speaking but can also feel that they look different from their contemporaries. Well-fitting and functioning prosthesis could be a great help during their schooling years as it will improve appearance and thu

Christ-Siemens-Touraine syndrome also known as anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia. Ectodermal dysplasia is a hereditary disorder characterised by developmental dystrophies of ectodermal derivatives. It is characterised by triad of signs comprising sparse hair, abnormal or missing teeth and inability to sweat. Anodontia or hypodontia is the most striking dental manifestation. In severe hypodontia, there is lack of alveolar development with consequent protrusion and eversion of the lips. The case of three children with anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia with partial anodontia is presented. Dental, ora
