[Morphology of the dorsal boundary of the hard palate in primates].

A comparison of the dorsal boundary of the hard palate among various primate species reveals three variations of form. The tendency towards intraspecific variation, particularly among the Prosimians and to a lesser degree in Simians, eliminates the possibility of a taxonomic interpretation. Tupaias show morphological characteristics which are considerably different from those of primates. The variation observed in this region is viewed in association with different functional parameters which may depend on the degree of prognathism.

Supernumerary molars in Anthropoidea, Adapidae, and Archaeolemur: implications for primate dental homologies.

The model of primate dental homologies and development recently proposed by Schwartz ('75, '78) is re-evaluated in view of documented exceptions to his account of postcanine supernumerary teeth in both anthropoids and prosimians. Schwartz concluded that catarrhines and living indriids retain only two true molars in each dental quadrant. As many as six molars on one side of the jaw can develop in rare instances in catarrhines, and supernumerary molars are also known for a wide range of other primates, including Cebidae, Adapidae, and subfossil Indriidae. Polydontia cannot be explained exclusive

Differential effects of monocular deprivation seen in different layers of the lateral geniculate nucleus.

Recent investigations have suggested that the morphological effects of monocular deprivation can be explained by a developmental competitive interaction between the pathways from the two eyes. This study presents evidence in the tree shrew for binocular competition and for an unequal effect of such competition on the different layers of the lateral geniculate nucleus. The effects of monocular deprivation were evaluated by comparing cell size changes in the binocular and monocular segments of the lateral geniculate nucleus in three tree shrews raised with one eye sutured. In two of these animal

Filarial infections in lemurs: Evidence for a wide geographical distribution and low host specificity among lemur species.

The relevance of emerging infectious diseases continues to grow worldwide as human activities increasingly extend into formerly remote natural areas. This is particularly noticeable on the island of Madagascar. As closest relatives to humans on the island, lemurs are of particular relevance as a potential origin of zoonotic pathogen spillover. Knowledge of pathogens circulating in lemur populations is, however, very poor. Particularly little is known about lemur hemoparasites. To infer host range, ecological and geographic spread of the recently described hemoparasitic nematode Lemurfilaria le

Functional Relationships Between Wrist Joint Morphology and Ulnar Deviation in Strepsirrhine Primates.

OBJECTIVES: Ulnar deviation is a fundamental hand movement reflecting different positional behaviors that characterize primates and other arboreal mammals. Few experimental data exist on the relationship between wrist joint morphology and ulnar deviation of the hand in living primates. This study tests functional relationships between carpal joint anatomy and the degree of ulnar deviation for eight strepsirrhine species representing major locomotor groups. METHODS: Passive ranges of ulnar deviation were measured from radiographs of the hand of 25 anesthetized subjects using a motion analysis

The Influence of Seasonal Availability of Young Leaves on Dietary Niche Separation in Two Ecologically Similar Folivorous Lemurs.

Traditional socio-ecological models consider that folivorous primates experience limited feeding competition due to the low quality, high abundance, and even distribution of leaves. Evidence from several folivorous species that experience similar constraints to frugivores does not support this hypothesis. The sympatric lemur genera Avahi (Indriidae) and Lepilemur (Lepilemuridae) are good models to understand how food availability constrains folivores since they are both nocturnal, folivorous, and have a comparable body mass. Here we investigate how two nocturnal folivorous primates, Avahi meri

[Sublingual structures in primates. Part 1: Prosimiae, Platyrrhini and Cercopithecinae].

1. The sublingual structures of primates have been studied light-microscopically. There are 3 different sublingual structures in the species studied. The plica sublingualis occurs in all primates. The sublingual organ is a topographically modified plica sublingualis which occurs exclusively in Callicebus. A sublingua is present only in the prosimians. 2. The plica sublingualis contains the excretory ducts of the submandibular and sublingual salivary glands. The sublingua is ventrally adherent to the body of the tongue and is, with a few exceptions in Tupaia, characterized by a skeleton of cart

Growth, function and homology: aspects of dental replacement in toothcombed strepsirhines.

In maturing juvenile lemurs and lorises, it was found that the anteriormost lower deciduous premolar migrates forward and may become associated with the teeth of the toothcomb; this is similar to previous observations on the dentition of indriines. The mesial shift of dp2 appears to be associated with the eruption of P2 but, more importantly, also with replacement of the deciduous by the permanent teeth of the toothcomb--which is a period of functional disruption at the front of the jaw. It is suggested that this growth-related phenomenon should not be confused with other aspects of dental dev

Cerebellar cortical efferents of the posterior lobe vermis in a prosimian primate (Galago) and the tree shrew (Tupaia).

The topographical organization of cerebellar cortical efferents of the posterior lobe vermis was studied in a prosimian primate (Galago senegalensis) and the tree shrew (Tupaia glis). Two patterns emerge; one which shows longitudinal zones of the entire vermis and a second which shows that induvidual lobules within the overall longitudinal pattern terminate in specific areas of the ipsilateral medial cerebellar nucleus (NM) and vestibular complix. The posterior lobe vermis consists of a narrow midline portion which projects bilaterally into the NM and a paramidline zone which projects only int

Microbial and Metabolic Flexibility in Response to Habitat Disturbance in an Ecologically Specialist Primate.

In the Anthropocene, understanding what renders a species prone to extinction is critical to wildlife management. Ecological specialists are hypothesised to be at particular risk, given that morphological, physiological, and/or behavioural constraints are expected to impede their responses to rapid habitat degradation. Nevertheless, studies have found mixed support for this hypothesis, raising the question, 'how resilient are specialists to environmental change?' Here, we test the hypothesis that ecological specialists, limited by behavioural and physiological constraints, may be at an energet

Middle ear pneumatization in nonhuman primates: A comparative analysis.

OBJECTIVES: We test the effects of body mass and phylogeny on middle ear cavity pneumatization, and the role of pneumatization in hearing function, spanning the anatomical, ecological, and behavioral diversity of nonhuman primates. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All cavities were segmented in middle ear scans of 96 specimens, from 12 strepsirrhine and 15 haplorhine extant species. We measured the tympanic cavity (TC) separately, and all other middle ear spaces together (MES), calculating the degree of pneumatization with the surface area-to-volume ratio. We tested body mass effect with linear regress

Ontogeny of the nasolacrimal duct in primates: functional and phylogenetic implications.

The ontogeny of the nasolacrimal ducts (NLD) and canals (NLC) are investigated in strepsirrhine and haplorhine primates. Developmental series of serially sectioned fetal, perinatal and adult specimens, in combination with juvenile and adult skulls subjected to high-resolution computed tomography, reveal that the vertical NLC and NLD of adult tarsiers and anthropoids are produced by the degeneration of a more horizontal anterior arm of the NLD that is present only transiently in haplorhines, but is maintained throughout life in strepsirrhines. This degeneration manifests as an 'unzipping' of th

Computed tomography and biomechanical analysis of fossil long bones.

Computerized transverse axial scanning (computed tomography) is a relatively new radiographic technique designed to recover precise cross-sectional images (tomograms) of 3-dimensional objects. This highly sensitive process permits tissues of similar density to be separated and displayed unambiguously. These special features are, therefore, ideal for analyzing the cross-sectional geometry of intact fossil long bones, even when they are highly mineralized and their medullary cavities are occluded by matrix. In order to demonstrate the utility of this method in assessing the complex relationship

Assessing the drivers of gut microbiome composition in wild redfronted lemurs via longitudinal metacommunity analysis.

The gut microbiome influences host's immunity, development, and metabolism and participates in the gut-brain axis, thus impacting the health of the host. It is a dynamic community varying between individuals and within individuals at different time points. Hence, determining the factors causing this variability may elucidate their impact on host's health. However, understanding the drivers of variation has proven difficult particularly as multiple interactions occur simultaneously in the gut microbiome. We investigated the factors shaping the gut microbiome by applying the metacommunity concep

Molecular and morphologic characterization of a Cryptosporidium genotype identified in lemurs.

This study reports the molecular and morphologic characterization of a Cryptosporidium sp., identified in stools of captive lemurs Propithecus verreauxi coquereli. Stool samples were collected from seven animals (n=7) presenting episodes of diarrhea. Bright-field light microscopy of stool smears stained with modified acid-fast technique revealed the presence of Cryptosporidium sp. oocysts in four of the stool samples analyzed. All microscopically positive samples were confirmed by PCR using primers designed to amplify DNA fragments from two independent loci, i.e. the Cryptosporidium oocyst wal

Dynamic vs. static social networks in models of parasite transmission: predicting Cryptosporidium spread in wild lemurs.

Social networks provide an established tool to implement heterogeneous contact structures in epidemiological models. Dynamic temporal changes in contact structure and ranging behaviour of wildlife may impact disease dynamics. A consensus has yet to emerge, however, concerning the conditions in which network dynamics impact model outcomes, as compared to static approximations that average contact rates over longer time periods. Furthermore, as many pathogens can be transmitted both environmentally and via close contact, it is important to investigate the relative influence of both transmission

Primate breeding season: photoperiodic regulation in captive Lemur catta.

Under natural light in Portland, Oreg., captive ring-tailed lemurs (Lemur catta) experience a breeding season that differs by nearly half a year from the season in Madagascar. A series of experimental day length changes from 1971 to 1974 demonstrated the ability of both temperate and tropical photoperiod cycles to induce estrous cycles in quiescent animals. After photoperiodic activation, most impregnated females failed to resume estrous cycles even after infant separations unless they received additional photoperiod changes. Unimpregnated females, on the other hand, showed no significant decl
