Inducible Expression of both ermB and ermT Conferred High Macrolide Resistance in Streptococcus gallolyticus subsp. pasteurianus Isolates in China.

Streptococcus gallolyticus subsp. pasteurianus is an under-recognized pathogen and zoonotic agent causing opportunistic infections in humans. Despite increasing recognition of this subspecies as a cause for human infectious diseases, limited information is known about its antibiotic resistance mechanism. In this study, we aim to identify the molecular mechanism underlying the high macrolide resistance of six S. gallolyticus subsp. pasteurianus isolates from dead ducklings collected in several natural outbreaks in China during 2010-2013. All isolates exhibited multi-drug resistance including hi

Identification of Streptococcus gallolyticus subsp. gallolyticus (Biotype I) Competence-Stimulating Peptide Pheromone.

Streptococcus gallolyticus subsp. gallolyticus, a member of the group D streptococci, is normally found in the bovine rumen and human gut. It is an opportunistic pathogen that was recently determined to be a bacterial driver of colorectal cancer, in addition to causing other diseases, such as infective endocarditis, bacteremia, neonatal meningitis, and septicemia. As an emerging pathogen, not much is known about this bacterium, its virulence mechanisms, or its virulence regulatory pathways. Previous studies suggest that S. gallolyticus subsp. gallolyticus uses a ComRS pathway, one of many Stre

The relationship between the new taxonomy of Streptococcus bovis and its clonality to colon cancer, endocarditis, and biliary disease.

BACKGROUND: The nomenclature of Streptococcus bovis has changed. The study aims were to examine and compare the clinical characteristics and outcomes of infections based on the new taxonomy and the genetic relatedness of strains. METHODS: Bacteremic cases from 2004 to 2010 at Assaf Harofeh Medical Center were reviewed. VITEK 2 later confirmed with polymerase chain reaction restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) was used for subspecies identification. VITEK 2 later confirmed with Etests was used for minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) testing. Repetitive extragenic palindromic

Diagnosis and Treatment of Childhood Meningitis Caused by Streptococcus bovis Group.

Streptococcus bovis is a rare, but important cause of bacterial meningitis in children. Since its discovery in the early 1970s, the pathogen has undergone multiple taxonomic changes producing four distinct subspecies today, the most prevalent of which is S. gallolyticus subsp pasteurianus in infants and children. While initially reported as sporadic case reports, there is a growing body of literature documenting invasive disease primarily in neonates and infants clinically indistinguishable from group B streptococcus. In this review, I discuss the taxonomic evolution of S. bovis meningitis and

Streptococcal endocarditis: a meta-analysis of species dependant risk.

BACKGROUND: Streptococcal infective endocarditis (IE) is a devastating disease. In international guidance, the risk of IE from streptococci is considered the same regardless of species (excluding Streptococcus pyogenes and Streptococcus pneumoniae). However, the idea of homogenous risk has been recently questioned. We aimed to evaluate the risk of IE across streptococcal species through meta-analysis of other published works and our own local data. METHODS: We first conducted a scoping review for publications that reported cases of streptococcal bacteraemia differentiated by species and estim

Infantile meningitis caused by Streptococcus infantarius subspecies coli (formerly S. lutetiensis).

Streptococcus infantarius subspecies coli (formerly S. lutetiensis), a member of the S. bovis/S. equinus complex (SBSEC), is a rare cause of neonatal and infantile infection. In contrast to more common pathogens seen in this age group (ie, S. agalactiae (group B Streptococcus)), SBSEC organisms are infrequently implicated in neonatal and infantile meningitis. A previously healthy infant male presented with fever, irritability and poor feeding. Lumbar puncture revealed cloudy cerebrospinal fluid with elevated white cells, high protein and low glucose. Gram stain showed polymorphonuclear leucocy

Streptococcus bovis septic arthritis and osteomyelitis: A report of 21 cases and a literature review.

BACKGROUND: The Streptococcus bovis group (SBG) is a well-known cause of endocarditis, but its role in osteoarticular infections (OAIs) has not been well described. METHODS: We analyzed all patients with OAIs by SBG diagnosed in our hospital (1988-2014). We selected those cases with septic arthritis and osteomyelitis, as defined according to clinical, microbiological, and imaging studies. Identification of the strains was performed by using the API 20 Strep and the GP card of the Vitek 2 system, and confirmed the identification by molecular methods. In addition, we reviewed the literature to

Antilisterial activity of raw sheep milk from two native Epirus breeds: Culture-dependent identification, bacteriocin gene detection and primary safety evaluation of the antagonistic LAB biota.

Raw milk from native small ruminant breeds in Epirus, Greece, is a valuable natural source of autochthonous lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains with superior biotechnological properties. In this study, two bulk milks (RM1, RM2) from two local sheep yards, intended for traditional Kefalotyri cheese production, were preselected for bacteriocin-like antilisterial activity by in vitro tests. Their antagonistic LAB biota was quantified followed by polyphasic (16S rRNA gene sequencing; IGS for Enterococcus; a multiplex-PCR for Leuconostoc) identification of 42 LAB (RM1/18; RM2/24) isolates further ev

Human microbiomes in cancer development and therapy.

Colonies formed by bacteria, archaea, fungi, and viral groups and their genomes, metabolites, and expressed proteins constitute complex human microbiomes. An increasing evidences showed that carcinogenesis and disease progression were link to microbiomes. Different organ sources, their microbial species, and their metabolites are different; the mechanisms of carcinogenic or procancerous are also different. Here, we summarize how microbiomes contribute to carcinogenesis and disease progression in cancers of the skin, mouth, esophagus, lung, gastrointestinal, genital, blood, and lymph malignancy
